I  am  setting  up  a  4'x2'x18"  planted  tank  in  the  form  of  a  central  ccoffee  table  in  my  drawing  room.  It  has  a  glass  top  which  is  removable.  For  the  time  being  i  have  cichlids  in  it,  and  have  hooked  two  three  ft  slim  rods  of  22  wt  on  the  side.  But  for  planted  tank,  i  guess  i'll  b  needing  lot  of  light.  But  have  no  clue  how  to  put  it.  Am  reluctant  to  replace  the  glass  hood  with  a  wood  one  since  the  amount  of  vision  in  the  tank  will  reduce.  Pals,  please  suggest  what  can  be  done.

How  about  hanging  a  MH(or  two)  a  few  feet  over  it....it'll  also  keep  your  coffee  warm  Chuckle
If  the  top  is  opaque,  you  can  make  a  hood  below  it  with  4-5PLLs  or  T5HOs  which  will  give  you  more  watts  for  each  bulb/lighting  source.

MH  is  Metal  Halide  or  simply  halogen  lighting.
You  are  asking  about  lighting  for  a  planted  tank,  but  why  you  posted  in  Lighting  for  Marine  Aquaria  forum?  Confused

 Hi  Manu,

 Welcome  to  IAH!

You  can  go  for  ready  to  use  T5,  T8  and  PL  light  fixtures  for  aquarium  use.
You  can  easily  mount  them  on  the  top  of  your  tank!

 Rocky..
pal,  actually  the  top  is  a  4'x2'  glass  sheet...transparent  one...it  has  to  be  removed  for  cleaning  n  all...the  cables  are  to  be  concealed  by  the  wodden  pillars  on  the  corners  of  the  tnk...if  ny  light  is  attached  to  the  top  and  wires  go  in  these  pillars,  it'll  b  a  big  problem  when  the  top  is  removed  for  cleaning  the  tank...

Oops...I  dint  knew  there  was  such  a  big  difference  between  MH  and  halogen,  I  thought  it  was  more  like  MH  having  a  more  intensity  than  a  normal  halogen  lamp.  Thanks  for  correcting  me  Trevor  n  Nayak  Sir.  Smile
Personally,  I  haven't  used  any  of  those,  thats  why  preferred  not  to  write  on  their  aquarium  usage.
