Since  Pollachi  is  close  to  Coimbatore  -  about  1+  hr  drive  from  there  -  we  can  set  up  base  at  Coimbatore.

In  case  you  all  are  planning  a  trip  to  Pollachi  please  try  visiting  a  near  by  waterfalls  by  name  Meenvellam  which  is  just  around  50kms  and  is  worth  a  visit.  The  place  is  surrounded  by  complete  forest  and  there  are  a  number  of  waterfalls(atleast  seven)  in  a  single  place.  This  would  also  be  a  good  place  to  collect  fish.

This  place  is  situated  near  by  to  pattancheri  and  pollachi.

If  any  body  have  any  information  regarding  this  place  please  shed  some  more  light.

 Hi  Everybody,

I  would  like  to    take  this  opportunity  to  request  the  IAH  forum  to  start  breeding  programmes  for  the  Ornamental  Fishes  in  the  Red  List,  so  that  we  can  keep  the  fishes  from  becoming  extinct.

All  Indian  Cichlids  specially  the  Etroplus  canarensis,  and  the  barbs  like  puntius  denisonii  should  be  conserved  and  as  IAH  members  we  should  take  professional  help  from  Ichthyologist  ,  (  if  there  are  any  body  in  the  forum)  to  breed  them  in  captivity.  As  these  fishes  are  mostly  from  South  &  Eastern  India  ,  I  think  members  from  that  part  of  the  country  will  be  successful  in  breeding  them.

Also  whenever  the  IAH  teams  go  for  trips  to  different  parts  of  in  in  search  of  ornamental  fishes  we  should  document  the  following  essentials  to  recreate  the  biotype  of  these  fishes  to  help  them  to  breed  locally  in  captivity.

essentials  are  with  pics  and  data:-
 1.  Collection  Locations
 2.  River  /  Water  source
 3.  Water  Condition  in  terms  of  pH,  KH,  DH,  NO2/NO3  /  O2/  CO2  levels
 4.  Aquatic  Plants
 5.  Soil  Type
 6.  Ecology  -  Tropical  Forest  /  simillar  details
 7.  Sun  Light
 8.  Depth
 9.  Community  Fish  etc
 10.  Eating  Habits  in  the  wild

You  could  add  other  details  also.

 for  example  http://home.vicnet.net.au/~fofwpc/fish_survey.html

Best  Of  Luck  To  Everybody  and  Best  Wishes

PS  :-  By  When  is  IAH  planning  this  trip  ,  I  would  also  like  to  Join  IN.

 Hello  everyone,
I  had  been  to  the  Kumaradhara  river  on  29  march. Was  pleasently  surprised  to  know  Mr  Madan  had  also  been  there.I  had  taken  some  photos  of  the  Kumaradhara  river  on  the  way  to  Subramanya  which  makes  it  on  a  higher  altitude  than  the  area  in  which  Mr  Madan  had  taken  his  photos.
 Mr  Madan,
had  enquired  about  the  Loadging  in  Subramanya  and  they  have  AC  accomodation. But  will  have  to  intimate  them  one  week  in  advance.By  the  way,How  was  the  heat?
 Bya,
 nayak.

This  month  end  should  be  fine  for  the  canarensis  trip  or  the  first  week  of  May  would  be  better  for  me  personally.

I  am  still  sorting  out  the  initial  bits  about  Aquatika  as  I  have  to  take  2  weeks  off  (  as  if  I  can  !)  because  my  wife  is  going  in  for  a  surgery.    So  I  haven't  paid  much  attention  to  the  trip.

Nag,  take  over  and  coordinate  the  trip  dates  with  all  the  others.

I  have  checked  out  Uppinangady  &  Kaikhamba  locations,  though  didn't  actually  go  fishing.  Uppinangady  is  on  the  way  and  Kaikhamba  is  on  the  road  from  the  airport  to  Mangalore  city.  These  two  locations  are  apparently  confirmed  areas  where  E.canarensis  was  collected.  So  we  can  touch  these  two  areas  and  then  proceed  to  Subramanya.

Another  biotope  is  the  Tunga  river.  The  river  runs  through  Kudremukh  National  Park  so  collecting  there  is  a  no  no.  Just  after  the  National  Park  check  post  there  are  excellent  places  to  explore  on  the  road  to  Shringeri.  The  problem  is  that  we  have  to  return  back  via  the  national  park  and  should  not  be  carrying  anything  caught  with  us.

If  we  want  to  do  this  entire  run  then  2-3  days  around  Mangalore  is  a  must.  So  let's  see  if  people  can  spare  so  much  time.
