 Madanji,
The  bridges  are  over  the  Kumaradhara  river.

The  old  bridge  is    not  very  strong  as  it  was  built  many  years  back.

Trucks  carrying  granite  blocks,  timber  logs  and  petroleum  tankers  and  we    hobbyists  will  have  to  use  the  New  bridge.

As  50  tons  max.  capacity  is  for  trucks  deadwieght  and  hobbyist  headwieght  on  the  old  bridge.

Not  much,  infact  last  year  the  roads  were  very  good.  Once  into  the  ghats  the  LPG  Tanker  traffic  might  get  trouble  some.  Usually  these  guys  keep  to  the  extreme  left  and  let  the  other  traffic  through,  so  unless  we  have  some  bad  luck  and  a  traffic  jam  on  the  ghats  it  should  be  good.

looking  at  the  other  forum,  where  E.  Canarensis  can  be  found,

would  it  not  make  more  sense  to  hit  the  easy  target  first,  i.e.  uppinangady  area,  and  then  move  on  to  the  dam?

also,    as  we  have  a  localite,  trevor,  from  that  area,  would  it  not  be  easier?  we  can,  if  possible,  make  notes  of  all  the  parameters  for  the  biotope  there  and  then  compare  it  to  the  dam  and  figure  out  the  basic  parameters  for  E.  Canarensis....

i  know  you  guys  would  have  thought  of  this  already,  but  i  just  thought  of  it...    Smile

Since  Pollachi  is  close  to  Coimbatore  -  about  1+  hr  drive  from  there  -  we  can  set  up  base  at  Coimbatore.  It  still  will  be  a  2  day  trip  at  the  least.

How  about  contacting  Dr.Jayaraman  from  ZSI  for  an  intro  letter  or  some  contact?  We  maybe  able  to  wraggle  one  of  those  small  boats  there.

 Still  planning......

If  you  are  planning  for  a  trip  in  the  annamalai  areas,  there  are  more  bio-diverse  spots.    Some  of  the  near  by  biotopes  are  Topslip,  valparai,  aliyar,  soliyar  lake  and  parambikolam.    To  be  precise  the  road  from  pollachi-aliyar  runs  through  tropical  forest.
Also  Silent  Valley  national  park  (an  unexplored  territory)  is  around  100  kms  from  pollachi.

I  think  it's  better  to  setup  base  camp  in  Pollachi,  where  good  accommodation  is  available.  The  office  of  the  wildlife  warden  is  also  here.

The  current  Director  of  ZSI  is  DR  K  VENKATARAMAN.  We  had  met  him  just  before  Aquatika  2004.    Officer  in  charge  of  aquatic  section  is  Dr  (Mrs)  Rema  Devi.  Please  see  http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=362&highlight=zsi

Dr  Venketraman  had  promised  help  to  us,  in  case  we  are  going  on  study  trips,  since  locals  can  be  very  troublesome  in  some  areas,  especially  in  Kerala.  What  we  can  do  is  request  Dr  Venketraman  to  issue  a  letter  of  introduction  to  Forest  Department  &  ZSI  TN  or  Karnataka  or  Kerala,  as  the  case  may  be.

It  will  also  be  a  very  good  idea  to  send  communications  in  advance  to  Forest  Department,  etc.  Our  last  experiance  at  Valparai  shows  that  such  an  effort  will  have  a  very  positive  effect  on  the  local  officials.  They  change  from  being  extremely  hostile  to  extremely  helpful.

Ok  will  start  work  on  Forest  Dept.  angle  from  here  too.  Need  to  find  the  person  who  can  give  a  suitable  recommendation,  If  not  will  look  for  Police  angle  also.

Pollachi  is  OK  if  accomodation  etc.,  is  good.  I  have  only  driven  through  Pollachi  a  couple  of  times  on  the  way  to  Palani,  so  didn't  know  much  about  the  place.

When  is  the  right  time  for  this  trip  is  the  question  now?

Most  of  the  interesting  places  in  the  Western  Ghats  will  be  closed  during  summer  due  to  drought  &  possibility  of  forest  fires.  Please  check  with  Forest  Department.  Adip  could  help  there.

Anywhere  in  Karnataka,  Adip  strikes  terror  among  the  Forest  Dept.  guys,  with  his  quiet  and  soft  monologue.
