Joyban  the  "forum"  you  are  looking  for  is  there,  though  not  under  the  Forums  index.  It  lists  a  number  of  LFS  from  various  places  our  members  have  visited.
 Please  explore  the  site.

I  did  manage  to  pick  up  some  livestock  and  what  surprised  me  is  the  rate  I  picked  up  a

 1.  Percula  Clown  :  3  SGD
 2.  Bi  Color  Parrot  Fish  :  4  SGD
 3.  Australian  Damsel  :  3  SGD
 4.  Regal  Tang  :  11  SGD

Multiply  this  with  28  and  the  resutant  figure  is  the  Rupee  Value

Once  u  do  that  you  will  realize  that  these  are
 BLOODY  RIDICULOUS  LOW  RATES.

All  the  fish  survived  except  the  Tang  since  its  packing  broke  before  I  packed  it  thankfully.

Customs  no  problemo  and  I  was  surprised  that  all  the  Fish  endured  an  8  hour  journey.

That's  the  reason  so  many  of  our  hobbyists  are  turning  commercial.

 Hi  Rajeev,

Glad  to  hear  that  your  fishes  made  it  safely.  When  are  u  planning  your  next  trip??

U  find  the  price  cheap  as  u  have  not  factored  in  any  customs  duty,  freight,  transport  costs.  Also  your  ticket  cost.

If  u  factor  all  the  above  costs  -  THE  FISHES  WILL  BE  VERY  EXPENSIVE!

 Regards,
 Rama

You  are  right  if  all  the  costs  are  factored  then  it  could  turn  out  to  be  expensive  but  still  not  that  expensive.  You  must  remember  commercially  you  will  order  in  buld  and  it  will  come  in  cargo  and  in  the  customs  usually  everyone  has  an  jack  hence  the  prices  will  be  still  lower  but  the  retail  price  is  hiked  because  we  have  no  other  option.

Rama,  I  don't  think  that  is  the  point  being  made.

The  point  is  that  these  fish  retail  for  so  less  in  Singapore.  Agreed  the  customs  duty  there  is  only  about  12%,  but  for  live  fish  into  India  the  duty  is  35%.

Inspite  of  all  these,  the  fish  retail  in  Singapore,  Thailand,  Malaysia  etc  for  so  less.

Then  why  the  high  prices  in  India?
The  transportation  cost  when  spread  over  a  number  of  fish  in  the  consignment  being  imported  will  still  not  justify  the  high  cost.

Even  death  of  fish  once  factored  in  should  be  about  the  same  for  dealers  in  Singapore  and  India.

The  point  is  that  entities  importing  aquarium  goods  /  live  fish  into  India  want  to  become  Dhirubhai's  overnight.  They  don't  realise  that  they  need  to  nuture  the  market  to  one  day  become  Dhirubhai.

You  cannot  prosper  in  a  hobby  market  by  making  things  unreasonably  expensive.

 Bribes?
Yes.  That  exists  in  India.  And  will  flourish  until  there  are  clear  cut  guide  lines  like  say  for  computer  chips.  Even  here,  the  computer  software  gaints  had  to  influence  policy.  They  were  heard  only  after  they  showed  high  foreign  incomes.  How  did  they  do  that  -  by  nurturing  their  market.

Who  is  to  make  the  Guidelines?
 The  Govt.  of  India.

Who  in  the  Govt.  of  India?  The  Morons  sitting  there  who  know  jack  about  ornamental  fish?
 High  hopes.

 Can  IAH  help?
Who  is  going  to  bother  about  650  odd  members  of  IAH  screaming  their  heads  off?

 Have  we  made  a  beginning?
 Yes,  we  have.

Can  we  push  it  the  front  pages  of  newspapers  like  Medha  Patkar  or  Narayana  Murthy  can  do?
 Fat  chance!

So  who  needs  to  change  here?
The  commercial  guys  in  the  hobby.

Hobbyists  will  somehow  source  what  they  need  at  relatively  affordable  prices  and  feel  good  about  it.

Way  to  go  Madan...good  job  !!!
I  think  650  of  us  should  actually  start  to  make  some  noise  to  be  heard,  not  wait  for  the  next  one  to  do  so.
I  think  we  shld  discuss  this  in  Bng  in  June  !!
 Cheers.

 Madan,

Point  well  made.  I  agree  with  u.  I  was  not  trying  to  deflate  rajeev's  enthusiasm  and  the  fact  that  he  got  a  good  bargain.

I  agree  with  u.  Commercial  guys  have  inflated  costs  everywhere.  What  is  available  at  Rs.6/-  (Goldfish)  in  Chennai  sells  at  Rs.  30/-  in  wholesale  and  Rs.  50/-  in  retail.

Like  i  mentioned  in  one  of  my  earlier  posts,  ornamental  fish  is  a  thriving  unorganised  industry  in  india  and  the  guys  sitting  in  Kurla  are  millionaires.  They  like  Madan  said,  have  become  chotta  dhirubhai's  in  a  short  span  of  time.

There  is  no  tax  to  be  paid,  no  invoices  -  all  cash  sales.

All  it  needs  is  the  supplier  from  Kolkata  to  open  his  own  shop  in  kurla  to  get  the  prices  crashing!!!

Can  630  odd  members  do  something??  Yes,  we  can.  Lets  think  about  it  and  come  up  with  something  radical.

 Regards,
 ama

I  did  like  to  make  a  point  here.  The  majority  of  the  commercial  guys  who  are  doing  business  out  there  are  doing  it  just  for  the  sake  of  money  only.  I  do  not  think  so  they  have  any  consideration  or  rather  affection  towards  the  fishes.  But  we  guys  are  different  ,  we  are  raising  the  fishes  because  of  our  love  and  interest  to  the  hobby  which  the  commercial  guys  lack.  I  have  seen  in  many  shops  the  way  they  handle  those  fishes.  It  is  so  bad    Crying or Very sad  .  Only  when  these  things  are  sorted  out  then  only  there  will  be  some  changes.

 Regards,

 Sridhar
