Though there are innumerable Discus breeders and exporters around, only a few like Roy, Andrew, Jack, Ivan, etc have their names bookmarked in the field.
Keen to know what makes their fish famous and make them stand out. And post the other prominent breeders, you know. |

Sam????
I guess you missed out Chai and Wayne.
Having personally interacted, and also visited their breeding setups, and spending quite a bit of time with both Roy Khoo and Chai, I would like to tell you what I know about these guys.
They make sure their fishes are in top shape by keeping notes on ALL tanks in their hatcheries.
They make sure their fishes are free of infection by religiously quarantining ALL new additions in a separate quarantine facility, thats away from their hatcheries.
They regularly bring in fishes from other top breeders across the world to enrich[or strengthen] their gene pool.
All these guys are pretty good and actually authorities on genetics[at least fish genetics].
Hard work, and truck loads of it.
Heaps of experience.
Merciless culling when fries are not of expected quality.
Man, they do spend quite a part of their lives for discus breeding, making huge sacrifices in personal and social and corporate lives. If you look at this, the money they make is peanuts, if you know what I mean. |

I had got some heckels with me from another vendor, which Roy agreed to repack for me, as they had been in their packets for a whole day, and I had about 14 hours left to reach home[Coimbatore].
When I went there, I was let in, but not my fishes. Roy wanted me to drop off all my fish outside his hatchery, and had his partner repack them for me. They made sure that IN CASE my fishes had any form of infection, that shouldnt affect his fishes. So, his partner brought out water in a huge bin, and also brought out the oxygen cylinder.
With this he repacked all packs with a water change and oxygen, and then disinfected himself totally with some strange medicine, before he entered the hatchery.
They are soooo careful, and maitain their fishes so well. They are really hospitable, and helped me out with quite a few things! |

Thanks for the inputs. Seems all of the above are dedicated to only Discus.
But, I thought each of them specialised in his own famous strain. Aware of any such? |

Has HK been a safe place to buy? Not for me.
Wayne might be an exception. |

Waynes angel Blue diamonds are best in the world with very good body shape and high fins .
Ivan's LSS got championship prize in Polland discus competition in March 08.
All good strain of Discus are developed in Malaysia , Malaysia Discus Society is organising a Discus competition - AQUAFAIR 2008 on 20-23rd Oct 08 at Kuala Lampur Convention Centre - Malaysia . around 300 tanks will be displayed and all big shots will be participating .
If you want to see wild strain , then 7th International Discus Championship is taking place on 2-5th Oct at Duisburg - Germany .
The discus you see in these competitions are mind blowing .
