 Hey,

Lets  start  this  discussion  now.  It  is  all  about  guppies.  How  does  one  get  strains  of  guppies?  What  are  the  variants?  What  are  champion  Gupies?  How  does  it  differ  from  normal  ones?

Does  anyone  have  answers  to  all  those?

Kick  off  now  and  pump  in  more  info  on.

Strains  of  guppies  are  fish  of  a  particular  color/finnage  that  breed  true  i.e.  all  offspring  are  similiar  to  each  other  ant  their  parents.  the  nomenclature  for  naming  a  strain  is  something  like  this:  body  color-fin  color-tail  shape  e.g.  snakeskin  red  deltatail  means  a  fish  with  a  snakeskin  pattern  on  the  body,  with  red  tail  that  is  triangular(delta).  there  are  several  strains  of  tail  type  like  veil,  delta,  round,  spike,  flag,  top  sword,  bottom  sword,  lyre  etc.
and  just  about  every  color  on  the  rainbow.  one  imp.  characteristic  of  a  good  strain  is  that  the  tail  color  and  dorsal  fin  color  are  same,  not  even  different  shades  of  the  same  color.  In  order  to  get  a  good  strain,  start  with  fish  of  known  ancestry  of  the  desired  type,  line  breed  till  u  get  a  true  breeding  strain....a  working  knowedge  of  genetics  is  very  useful.

champion  guppies  are  those  that  have  won  in  shows,  offspring  of  champions  share  in  the  lory  too  Smile  .
they  are  different  from  normal  guppies  in  that  no  one  would  sell  a  champion  fish...only  the  offspring  at  exhorbitant  rates!!!

 Guppy  Facts

Reproduction  occurs  all  year  around  but  are  limited  by  lack  of  food  in  the  wet  season.

Guppies  are  omnivorous  opportunistic  feeders.  Algae  makes  up  50%  of  their  diet  in  the  wild.

The  relative  area  of  orange  pigment  in  a  pattern,  has  high  inheritability  (  70%).

Typical  guppy  habitats  in  Trinidad  where  they  come  from  originally  are  clear,  swift  flowing,  relatively  sterile  streams  in  mountain  forest  areas.

There  is  hardly  any  vegetation  in  these  streams.  So  the  visual  background  for  guppies  and  their  predators  is  rocks,  multicolored  gravel  and  leaf  litter.

In  natural  habitats,  guppies  prefer  relatively  still  pools  in  small  streams  and  the  edges  of  back  water  rivers.  Only  large  females  and  a  few  males  can  be  found  in  deeper,  swiftly  flowing  parts  of  streams.

Male  Guppies  usually  inherit  the  color  patterns  of  their  fathers  intact,  except  possibly  for  variations  in  the  pattern  on  the  tail.

Predation  influences  the  expression  of  male  color  patterns  and  sexual  displays  and  may  also  influence  mate  choice  on  females.

A  female  will  not  copulate  with  a  male  who  has  a  conspicuous  color  pattern  in  a  given  background  environment.

That  means  a  female  will  not  copulate  with  a  red  /  yellow  /  orange  colored  male  in  a  blackish  rock  background,  similarly  she  will  not  copulate  with  a  blue  or  black  colored  male  in  a  say  a  multicolored  background  made  up  rock  fragments  with  the  color  black  missing.

 Thanks  Madan,

Thanks  for  those  valuable  information.  Now  I  Understand  why  my  guppies  in  the  pond  are  not  breeding,  while  the  mollies  in  a  simillar  (seperate)  pond,  are  breeding  like  anything.

 Thanks  again.

I  have  always  interested  in  keeping  show  quality  guppies.  Any  one  knows  good  guppy  breeders  in  Madras  or  even  in  India  ?  Is  there  a  demand  for  good  guppies  ?

I  have  also  been  interested  in  keeping  good  Guppies!  But  have  not  seen  really  good  strains  locally  in  a  long  time.  Will  be  happy  if  someone  let  me  know  if  there  are  any  breeders  working  on  Guppies.

Hi,  The  link  given  in  my  earlier  post  may  not  work.  Try  to  search  with  Google  with  the  words  "  Colorific  Aqua"  and  the  first  answer  in  the  search  will  give  you  the  link.  You  can  access  his  web    site  from  there.
