 Haji,

Any  tips  on  breeding   the  Betta  persephone.  Tried  a  lot  but  maybe  i  missed  the  trick.  Just  now  have  the  Betta  coccina  with  their  nest  so  lets  see  what  is  the  outcome  from  that.

 Regards

 This  fish  is  Betta  falx.

Tank  -  18"12"12".  With  a  lot  of  driftwood  and  leaf  litter.

Water  -  Ph  of  about  5.5.  Temp  -  24  degrees.

Breeding  -  I  found  them  easily  to  be  a  beginners  fish.  Superb  fish.  These  will  hold  from  9  -  11  days  and  then  spit  out  eggs,  i  had  a  problem  with  the  female  harassing  the  dad  so  had  to  separate  them.

The  photograph  attached  has  the  male  and  female  and  by  looking  at  them  i  am  sure  you  can  make  out  the  sexes.

Betta  Prima  -  aka  three  striped  mouthbrooder

A  similar  looking  fish  to  falx/simplex   except  in  size.
 My  first  mouthbrooder
 Quite  easy  to  keep  fish
Holding  period  roughly  12  days  -  need  to  check  records.

Changes  colour  with  mood  -  males  can  get  a  very  nice  green  irridescence.

 Juvenile  F1

F1  pair  spawning  for  the  first  time.Yes,  those  are  eggs  Very Happy

Male  wild  caught  -  holding  eggs  -  female  in  foreground

You  can  see  the  colour  in  this  nicely  posed  shot  -although  image  quality  is  poor  -  taken  from  a  1MP  camcorder.  Male  on  top  Very Happy

 Regards,
 Venkat

Excellent  photos  guys  .......  Venkat  ....  looks  like  you  had  the  primas  earlier  than  me  ....  I  only  had  mine  last  year  after  "a  long  search"  Chuckle  The  supplier  send  me  2  pairs  which  turn  out  to  be  3  males  and  one  female.  Smile  I  still  have  mine  now  including  the  F1s.

 Nikhil,

The  falx  is  an  amazing  fish  and  is  highly  recommended.  Thumb Up  These  wild  betta  ...given  the  right  condition  ...and  the  owner  will  be  amazed  with  the  beautiful  colors.  Thumbs Up  Btw  the  reason  why  the  female  is  harrassing  the  male  is  that  she  is  ready  to  spawn  again.

 Shankar,

Looking  forward  to  see  those  smarags  of  yours  Smile

Thanks  Shankar,  Rohan  and  Eddie!  -  I  really  need  to  start  cleaning  the  glass  before  taking  pictures...

I  got  the  prima  back  in  2006  -  the  supplier  sold  them  as  betta  simplex   Chuckle  .I  was  just  starting  to  keep  bettas  I  guess  mine  were  the  first  pair  in  India.  I  stopped  breeding  them  after  a  year  due  to  lack  of  space  and  eventually  lost  them  all.  I'm  expecting  a  pair  from  the  same  line  soon...

The  female  harassing  the  male  a  week  or  so  after  spawning  happened  with  the  prima  as  well.  The  parents  are  very  good  with  the  fry  -  no  cannibalisation.  I  actually  thought  the  male  had  swallowed  the  spawn  until  I  found  the  fry  a  couple  of  days  later  in  the  tank  :)

BTW,  Eddie,  I  thought  Prima  was  fairly  common  in  the  wild.  And  I'm  looking  forward  to  seeing  your  pictures  of  imbellis  from  different  locations.

I  have  some  pics  to  post  of  a  couple  of  species  from  Nikhil  that  I  am  keeping  now...  hope  to  do  so  soon.

 Regards,
 Venkat

Will  be  getting  my  fish  back  from  my  friend  here(Haji  i  am  talking  about  Colin).  Also  will  be  getting  Betta  rutilans  and  uberis  and  maybe  smaragdina.  Will  try  and  update  soon  with  pics,  trying  to  use  my  flatmates  Digi  SLR  to  get  better  pics.

 Regards

Ok  one  more.  Betta  strohi.  They  are  superb  fish  but  very  very  quarrelsome.

 Tank  -  24"12"15"
 Water  -  Ph  5.5  ;  Temperature  -  21  -22  degrees.
Care  -  These  are  wild  fish  but   have  been  eating  all  food  including  tetra  prima.  They  also  are  very  aggressive  towards  each  other.  Just  hoping  they  will  stop  that.

 Breeding  -  No  success  yet.
