 Hi  All,
I  visited  Valparai  in  the  Western  Ghats  of  India  over  the  weekend.  Its  situated  3500  feet  above  sea  level  and  is  famous  for  its  rolling  hills  of  tea  plantations.  The  ghat  roads  that  leads  to  this  place  has  forty  hair  pin  bends  and  its  a  nice  drive  to  the  top.
Its  very  close  to  the  Indira  Gandhi  Wild  Life  Sanctuary  and  so  you  can  spot  quite  a  few  wild  animals  like  the  Lion  tailed  Macaque  and  Elephants.

 Day  1:
We  stopped  at  a  stream  flowing  under  a  bridge  on  the  Sheikalmudi  road  in  the  Anamalai  region.  This  shallow  stream  had  thick  clumps  of  Lagenandra  ovata  and  Blyxa  aubertii  growing  in  it.  There  was  thick  growth  of  Lagenandra  ovata  on  the  banks  too.
Puntius  fasciatus  and  Devario  aequipinnatuswas  the  most  common  species  of  fish  found  in  this  stream  and  every  other  stream  too.  Garra  sp.  were  also  found  in  and  around  the  base  of  rocks  or  basking  on  flat  rocks.  I  also  collected  some  Mesonoemachilus  sp.  (guentheri  or  herrei)  among  the  Lagenandra  and  Travancoria  elongata  among  the  Blyxa.
I  was  using  an  8  inch  wide  handnet  so  I'm  not  sure  what  others  I  missed  but  I  didn't  observe  any  other  species  of  fish.
The  odd  water  scorpion  and  tadpole  did  land  up  in  my  net!!

 The  stream  below  the  bridge.

I  was  not  dressed  for  collecting!

 Blyxa  aubertii

 Lagenandra  ovata

 Lagenandra  ovata  emerse  growth.

 Mesonoemachilus  sp.

 Garra  sp.

 Travancoria  elongata?

 The  loaches.

 Juvenile  Devario  aequipinnatus

 Tadpole

 Day  2:
We  visited  a  stream  at  the  base  of  a  tea  plantation  enroute  to  Nallamudi  Poonjolai  (Viewpoint).  I  sighted  lots  of  what  I  think  are  Barilius  gatensis  and  some  Garra  sp.  Puntius  fasciatus  seems  to  be  the  most  widespread  in  these  parts  as  we  found  it  in  almost  every  stream  that  we  stopped  at.
I  did  not  do  any  collecting  on  day  2  so  there  are  only  some  really  bad  pics  of  the  fishes  from  above  the  water.

You  can  see  some  Barilius  if  you  use  your  imagination.

 ...and  some  Garra  sp.  too

Some  pics  of  a  stream  that  we  took  a  look  at  enroute  to  Chinnakalar

 Puntius  fasciatus

 ..and  Garra  sp.

Our  last  stop  was  a  waterfall  close  to  Chinnakalar  dam.  I  really  couldn't  ID  the  fishes  downstream  or  at  the  waterfall  and  I  couldn't  get  close  enough  to  get  a  good  pic  of  the  fishes  as  my  back  was  hurting  from  the  previous  days  collection.

On  our  trip  back  to  Pollachi,  we  went  to  a  place  called  Monkey  falls  (due  to  the  hordes  of  cheeky  monkeys?).  The  water  downstream  was  pretty  dirty  with  the  Shampoo  satchets  and  plastic  covers  but  I  saw  some  huge  groups  of  fat  well  grown  Garra's  in  this  dirty  water.  There  were  thousands  of  them  in  that  small  area  like  one  of  those  spa's!  A  sight  to  see  for  sure.

 Credits:
My  Parents:  Trying  to  control  my  1.5  year  old  nephew  while  we  were  collecting.
My  Nephew:  For  throwing  pebbles  at  us  from  overhead,  while  we  were  fishing  in  the  stream  under  the  bridge.
My  Brother  and  SIL:  Fish  spotting,  chasing  and  photography.
My  Wife:  Logistic  support  and  donating  her  hair  bands  for  tying  up  a  cover.

Thats  the  End!  Hope  all  of  you  enjoyed  it!

Wow!  great  pictures  of  Valparai.  It  was  one  of  my  territories  when  I  was  in  sales  some  years  back.  Though  a  small  market  requiring  only  one  visit  a  month,  I  scheduled  two  visits  a  month.  Loved  the  place.  I  wasn't  in  the  hobby  then  Sad  .
The  fish  'n  plants  are  awesome.  Gravel  looks  great.  Water  must've  been  cold.   Monkey  falls  is  littered  with  broken  glass  bottles   Thumb Down  .   Will  go  there  sometime  again.  Thanks  for  sharing.

more  than  the  fishes  and  the  photos,  the  support  of  your  family  is  the  one  to  be  noted  here...  I  can't  imagine  going  for  a  family  trip  with  a  fish  net!!

lol  no..  I  was  wearing  cargo  pants.
I  prefer  not  to  lure  the  fishes  with  the  bright  colored  shorts.
