As  it  is  said  feeding  live  aquatic  animals  (  Tubiflex  ,  Blood  worms  )  to  discus  is  dangerious  ,  because  they  comes  from  polluted  source  .  They  carries  parasites  ,  Bacteria  etc  which  can  harm  your  discus  .  Experts  says  ,  It  is  very  difficult  to  elliminates  these  parasites  even  cleanning  them  with  PP  or  Formaline  or  any  other  bactericides.   Actually  live  feed  are  good  for  the  growth  of  the  discus  ,  but  due  the  above  problems  we  avoid  feeding  these  feed  to  our  discus  .  Now  what  is  left  with  us  or  what  are  the  other  safe  options  .  Earthworms  is  one  of  the  safe  feed  for  discus  .

Earthworms  are  from  soil  and  when  they  are   feed  to  freshwater  fishes  ,  it  will  not  harm  them  .  Most  of  the  experts  throughout  the  world  recommends  earthworms  for  discus  .  They  contains  good  percentage  of  proteins  and  others  which  is  required  for  the  growth  &  breeding  of  discus  .

Actually  there  are  more  then  3000  species  of  earthworms  in  the  world  ,  In  India  more  then  300  species  of  earthworms  are  found  .  There  are  two  popularly   known  species  of  earthworms  in  India  ,  They  are  Eudrilus  Euginae  &  Eisenia  Foetida  .  As  per  my  experience  Discus  enjoy  eating   Eudrilus  Euginae  type  of  earthworms  .

In  India  there  are  many  vermiculture  farms  who  cultures   earthworms   ,  In  Southern  India  there  are  many  .

How  to  keep  these  earthworms  :  You  can  keep  these  earthworms  in  Soil  mixed  with  Cow  dung  .  Every  day  just  sprinkle  some  water  over  them  ,  feed  them  with  dry  Cow  dung  (  dried  one  )  .

How  to  feed  to  discus  :  Few  hrs  before  feeding  ,  remove  some  earthworms  from  the  culture  and  placed  them  on  news  paper  .  You  can  cut  the  news  paper  like  2  x  8  inch  strips  &  put   them  in  box  and  then  you  can  placed  these  earthworms  on  them  .  After  few  hrs  say  after  one  hr  earthworms  will  discharge  all  the  waste  from  their  body  on  these  paper  .  Now  you  just  clean  these  earthworms  with  clean  water  ,  chop  them  to  smaller  size  and  feed  you  discus  .  Good  for  Breeding  and  good  for  growth  .

Sometimes  you  get  earthworms  in  the  garden  or  some  nursery  where  they  sprays  some  chemicals  to  keep  away  the  insects  ,  if  you  feed  these  earthworms  to  your  discus  ,  your  discus  may  turn  black  after  consumming  these  earthworms  ,  so  be  careful  on  this  also  while  feeding  earthworms  .  source  is  imp  .

 Happy  Discus  keeping  .

 Thanks

Hi  Shiva.  Thanks  for  the  valuable  info.  I  have  been  feeding  my  Pacus  earthworms  in  the  monsoon  season  as  there  are  plenty  in  my  backyard  (we  have  a  small  garden  behind  our  bungalow).  Although  we  don't  really  use  any  chemicals  as  such  in  cultivating  our  plants,  the  earthworms  themselves  are  always  slithering  around  in  concrete.  What  i  want  to  know  is  that  if  i  feed  earthworms  from  such  a  source  can  it  pose  to  be  a  problem?

Also,  where  can  i  "buy"  earthworms  from  in  Mumbai  as  LFS'  do  not  sell  them?

the  earthworms  ,  what  you  get  during  monsoon  are  different  species  ,  but  you  can  feed  them  to  your  fishes  after  cleanning  with  water  well  .  I  suggest  you  the  below  for  next  monsoon  .

Once  rain  start  ,  locate  a  clean  open  place  ,   which  is  always  wet  during  monsoon  ,  put  old  gunny  bag  in  this  place  and  put  few  earthworms  under  this  gunny  bags  to  start  with  .  After  few  days  ,  when  the  gunny  bag  gets  wet  &   rotten  ,  you  will  find  hundreds  of  earthworms  under  this  gunny  bag  ,  pick  up  few  wash  them  ,  chop  them  and  feed  your  fishes   ROFL  .
There  may  be  few   smaller  in  size  ,  which  you  can   feed  them  directly  .

If  someone  is  comming  from  Poona  ,  ask  him  to  visit  the  below  place  ,  they  sells  earhworms  .  they  are  selling  very  good  species  of  earthworms  .

Shiva,  thanks  for  the  info,  the  idea  of  removing  the  waste  inside  the  earthworms,  is  excellent  will  try  it.

Long  time  back  i  used  to  feed  earthworms  to  angel  fish,  the  process  was  to  catch  the  worms,  wash,  chop  and  drop  in  the  tank.

 Just  a  thought...

After  chopping  the  earthworms,  will  putting  them  in  salt  water  for  some  time  (rinse  with  tap  water  later),  help  in  any  way  to  reduce  the  risks  of  infection?

 Has  anyone  tried  this?

No  need  to  put  the  earthworms  in   salt  (  Sodium  Chloride  ).Just  take  from   Good  source  ,   clean  it  well  and  just  feed  the  fish  .  Earthworms  are  from  soil  (  borrowing  animal  )  ,  hence  they  are  safe  for  fish   (  Aquatic  Animal  )  .

and  for  all  the  betta  lovers,  tiny  earthworms  are  a  better  conditioning  source  for  the  adult  bettas.   I've  seen  it  in  a  breeders  place,  he  really  had  some  huge  bettas

Just  wash  them  with  tap  water  ,  chop  them  and  feed  them  to  Discus.  go  for  smaller  size  earthworms  .
