Friends,  just  wanted  some  guidance  on  the  yeast  to  be  used  with  the  DIY  System.  Actually  I  can  get  3  types  of  yeasts  here-

 1.  The  normal  Brownish  colored  Speheres  that  come  in  boxes  from  common  stores

 2.  A  Baker  here  has  these  small  white  colored  granules

 3.  A  Yeast  Paste  that  I  recently  got  from  another  baker.  He  said  that  it  works  instantly.  I've  used  this  for  my  current  DIY  Co2  but  it  doesnt  seem  very  efficient...

Which  of  the  above  is  best  suitable  for  our  DIY  System  ?  Kindly  guide  me...
 Thanks  a  lot  !
 Kush

I  have  started  with  airstone  and  I  get  a  continuous  flow  of  small  bubbles  in  3  lines.....I  have  3  lines  of  CO2  bubble  going  on  out  of  which  many  dissolve  in  the  water  and  I  guess  are  beneficial.  A  power  filter  would  disrupt  a  tank  as  small  as  mine  and  as  my  tank  is  planted  fully  it  might  give  more  issues  so  I  guess  an  airstone  is  working  fine  for  me  !

 @chinkz

I  am  using  [2]  white  powder  one.

It  does  not  matter  which  yeast  you  use,  but  it  should  be  alive,  after  putting  it  in  the  sugar  solution  you  should  see  bit  of  frothing/bubbling  in  couple  of  hours,  if  not  the  yeast  is  dead.   Buy  a  new  packet  and  check  the  expiry  date  before  buying,  once  the  packet  is  open  store  it  in  the  fridge.

The  trick  is  to  use  the  right  amount  of  sugar  and  very  little  yeast.

Ask  for  measuring  cups  and  measuring  spoons  in  any  "super  market"/food  world  type  outlets.  A  planted  tank  hobbyist  needs  both  eventually.  They  are  extremely  cheap.

It  is  a  set  of  four  Plastic  spoons  which  when  full  measure  1  table  spoon,  1  teaspoon,  1/2  and  1/4  tea  spoon.  Do  not  heap  it  like  a  small  hill.  The  spoon  should  be  full  to  the  brim  only.
Similarly  you  get  1  cup,  half  cup  and  1/4  cup  measures  as  a  set.

 Hi  Preeths,

Thanks  a  lot  for  the  kind  advice  and  for  guiding.  I'll  check  with  the  local  Spencers  Daily  -  I  hope  they  have  it...

So  the  mix  that  I  have  now  is  wrong  ?

 Regards
 Kush

I  have  tea  cups  in  various  sizes  in  the  house  so  thats  not  really  a  good  measure...  If  you  think  you  have  more  sugar  then  dilute  the  mix  and  put  the  extra  in  an  other  bottle  and  use  both  for  the  tank.

 @  chinkz

 Metric  measurement  :   1     Cup  =  250  ml     and   1/2  Cup  =  125  ml

1/2  Cup  =  approximately  100  grams  of  sugar   or  4  heaped(maximum  you  can  take)  Table  spoons  of  sugar

Maxv  once  the  yeast  packet  is  then  it  has  to  be  kept  in  the  fridge. Before  adding  it  to  the  sugar  sln  crush  the  yeast. Both  the  yeast  shown  in  the  pics  are  okay.Add  only  a  pinch  of  it  to  a  cup  (50ml)  of  tepid  water  (  warm).Stir/shake  well  and  add  the  dissolved  yeast  to  the  sugar  sln. You  can  also  add  a  dash  of  baking  soda  to  the  bottle.

Also  if   you  are  confused  with  weight  &  measurement  just  ensure  the  sugar  sln  is  concentrated.Depending  on  the  outcome  you  can  wary  the   level  of  concentation  for  future  set  ups.

Use  a  sterlised  bottle.(  clean  with  hot  water  ).

 Regards
 Dinesh.

Guys,  This  is  a  fantastic  post.  I  have  read  and  understood  a  lot  about  co2  for  planted  aquaria  from  this  post.

I  have  two  mollies  in  a  2.5"  x  1"  x  1.5"  tank.  Right  now  I  dont  have  much  plants  in  it,  however,  I  want  to  make  it  a  planted  aquarium.  What  I  wanted  to  know  is  what  is  the  effect  of  the  co2  on  Fishes.  How  much  time  should  i  keep  it  connected  to  my  tank  so  that  it  does  not  affect  my  fishes?

I  am  also  planning  to  add  more  live  bearers  to  the  tank.  Will  that  affect  the  co2.

Any  help,  links  to  other  topics  on  this  subject  will  be  greatly  appreciated.

 Thanks
 Mahesh

Refer  the  first  post  of  this  discussion  thread  for  how  to  setup  the  DIY  CO2,  this  type  of  setup  will  not  have  any  effect  on  the  fish,  only  small  quantity  of  CO2  will  actually  dissolve  in  the  water  enough  to  make  the  plants  grow  faster.

You  can  keep  the  DIY  CO2  running  full  time  even  when  the  lights  are  OFF.
