Hi,  for  last  one  year  I  am  trying  to  grow  submerged  HC  carpet  and  facing  repeated  failure.  Couple  of  days  back  I  started  growing  them  imersed,  and  got  a  good  growth.  But  my  Mom  started  to  use  my  Nano  CUBE  as  a  night  lamp  and  lights  were  on  for  24x7  for  2  weeks.  I  got  hell  lot  of  hair  algae  on  Substrate  as  well  as  on  HC  as  result.

Yesterday  I  took  out  the  HC  and  removed  all  the  Algae  and  replanted  them  on  Substrate  and  on  a  rock.

 Here  goes  the  setup  details.

Substrate:  Something  called  aquaclay  (A  chinese  product  kept  for  a  long  time  in  my  stock.  May  be  name  is  wrong)  topped  with  river  sand.

Light:  23  Watt  CFL  (Will  add  another  11watt  if  required.)

CO2:  Will  start  pressurised  CO2  @1BPS  (is  it  too  much  for  a  7G  tank?)  speed  from  tomorrow,  diffused  by  Ceramic  diffuser.

 Filteration:  Dolphin  300LPH  HOB

Ferts:  will  start  EI  dosing  shortly.

Water  Temparature  is  still  under  25  degree,  and  hope  will  be  able  to  keep  it  26-27  degree  through  out  the  summer.

Now  I  want  to  know,  am  I  missing  something?  What  exactly  I  want  to  get  a  good  growth  of  HC?  Please  share  your  inputs  and  experience.

Tirtha  I  havenot  grown  HC  myself.  But  sharing  some  information  I  gathered  from  fellow  hobbyists.

I  guess  you  have  already  read  Tom's  article  on  emersed  HC  growth.  A  friend  of  mine  attempted  that  using  normal  clay  soil  and  got  a  great  carpet.

He  also  shared  that  in  his  experience  to  grow  HC  submersed  a  very  soft  water,  pH  around  6.2  is  a  must.  I  will  be  requesting  Rana  to  elaborate.

Have  seen  them  doing  decently  in  an  ADA  AS  II  setup  of  a  friend  of  mine  .  Try  with  a  bag  of  Amazonia  if  possible.  You  are  aware  that  AS  brings  down  both  pH  and  KH.

Hope  this  information  is  of  some  help.

NAL/Madan  Sir,  thanks  for  your  inputs.  My  water  pH  is  7.  But  as  far  as  I  know,  Kolkata  water  pH  is  much  higher  and  Rana  was  growing  them  on  normal  sand.  But  for  sure  I  will  give  AS  Amazonia  a  shot  within  few  days.

Couple  of  days  back  I  have  lost  Eriocaulon  for  high  kH  and  now  it  is  stunned  HC  for  High  pH.   Thumb Down

Another  question.  What  is  the  relation  of  Temparature  with  HC  survival  and  growth?  I  heard,  if  it  is  more  than  26-27,  HC  will  melt  down.

Tirtha,  from  my  experience  HC  'cuba'  can  do  well  in  moderately  hard  water.  We  have  hard  water  here  in  Houston  but  I  have  not  had  any  problem  growing  a  lush  carpet  of  HC.  Aquasoil  definitely  helps.  Two  most  important  things  are  a  lot  of  light  and  and  temperature  below  28  °C.   HC  'cuba'  also  responds  well  to  carbon  supplementation  with  excel.
Right  now  I  have  HC  growing  in  two  tanks.
First  one  is  a  10G  with  65W  CF  6700K  lamp  ,  Aquasoil  Amazonia  II  and  pressurized  Co2.  This  is  how  the  carpet  looks.

The  second  tank  is  ADA  Mini  M  5G  with  the  27  W  CF   8000K  Mini  Solar  Lamp.     This  has  Aquasoil  Amazonia  as  the  substrate  but  even  the  27  W  with  great  reflectors  is  not  growing  the  HC  in  a  nice  tight  carpet.  It  is  growing  but  the  growth  is  not  optimum.

 Thanks
 Bhushan

Hey  buddy...  thanks  for  the  detailed  inputs.  Can  you  please  share  your  water  parameters  (pH,  kH  and  gH).  And  what  did  you  mean  by  hard  water?  High  kH  or  High  gH?

Tirtha  ,  I  am  sorry  I  have  never  owned  a  testing  kit.  So  no  way  of  telling  any  of  the  above.  I  observe  my  plants  and  provide  them  with  the  needed  things  accordingly.

 Thanks

 Bad  luck.   Sad

No  problem.  I  tried  out  HC  on  Normal  Sand  and  failed.  Let  me  get  some  Amazonia  and  check  if  I  can  grow  them  this  time.

 Tirtha

Put  small  clumps  on  substrate  (Could  be  normal  sand  gravel  also)  and  sprinkle  some  gravel  on  it  to  keep  those  in  place.

Pump  up  the  NO3  level  to  >  10  ppm.  Dose  plenty  of  CO2.  Keep  the  temperature  below  26  C.  This  is  not  a  highlight  plant;  anything  around  2  watts/G  will  serve  your  purpose.  Grows  both  in  soft  and  medium  hardwater.

We  will  wait  to  see  the  tank  picture  after   two  months  :D

 Regards

PS  :  All  the  emersed  growth  will  die  (will  turn  yellowish/blackish)  but  new  submersed  shoots  will  appear  and  creep  on  the  substrate.
