 Guys!

What's  a  good  choice  here  for  a  desktop  system  and  the  cheap  and  best  brand  to  go  for.  Mine  recently  crashed,  but  did  give  me  4.5  years  life,  was  an  hitachi.

BTB,  I  have  IDE  and  SATA  support  on  my  hardware.

EDIT:  Oops,  its  for  a  HDD  and  not  an  entire  computer.  Edited  my  earlier  post

Go  with  Serial  ATA.  The  common  seagate  HDDs  are  pretty  good.  Also  Western  Digital  (I  have  a  WD  60gb  since  2001  still  doing  well).

The  Seagate  FreeAgent  series  of  external  HDs  has  been  getting  good  reviews,  you  might  want  to  check  that  out.
External  gives  you  portability,  if  that's  not  really  important,  then  an  internal  HDD  is  the  way  to  go.

@venkat  this  is  dell  dimension  8300  series....I  have  hard  limits  the  HW  can  push  and  support.  I  use  it  on  a  lighter  side  for  gaming,  surfing,  downloads...my  budget  can  stretch  to  2500[INR]  max/-   Sad  pls.  suggest  me.

@vyas  I  know  how  naughty  the  junior  is!!!

@deepak  With  all  the  tera..peta...exabytes  of  external  HDD's  in  the  market  today,  am  confused  if  using  external  HDD  with  OS  installed  and  use  for  backup  and  work  or  just  go  the  internal  way!!!!!  by  compro..on  the  freedom/mobility/lightweight/flexibility....with  the  external

If  you  want  it  for  personal  use  but  not  for  any  Hosting  or  data  server,  then  go  for  500GB  Segate  Internal  HDD(3000/-  INR).  I  am  not  sure  if  you  want  to  change  the  complete  desktop  system,  if  yes,  then  go  for  assembled  one.

But  now  a  days  I  would  suggest  you  to  go  for  a  Laptop.  Increase  your  budget  a  bit  and  go  for  a  Dell  Laptop.  Currently  there  are  Dell,  HP  and  Lenovo  Laptops  at  my  home.  But  no  one  can  compete  DELL  on  strength  and  performance.

P.S:  Whatever  you  plan,  go  for  minimum  2GB  RAM.  And  I  don't  think  you  can  install  OS  on  an  External  HDD(USB  connected).  Cause  all  the  externals  connected  with  USB  will  act  like  slave  and  the  internal  one  is  the  master  with  boot  sector  and  OS  installed  in  it.

the  transcend  passbook  HDD  is  neat
i  have  a  400gb  drive,  it  is  shock  proof  to  quite  an  extent,  cheaper  than  WD(which  i  have  lost  1-  350GB,  1-  400GB)  my  friend  lost  a  seagate  500GB  external.

the  transcend  passbook  HDD  also  doesn't  require  any  power  source,  just  the  usb  will  kick  start  it  into  action

 Tirtha,

I  wish  I  had  the  support  for  500GB  internal!  but  not  with  the  current  chipset!!!!

Ah!  going  for  laptop  these  recession  times!  I  would  land  on  footpath,  no  way.

Installing  OS  on  external  is  doable....

 regards,
 vijai

Given  a  choice  of  external  HDD's,  which  one  is  the  'cheap  and  best'

 1.  Seagate
 2.  Maxtor
 3.  Transcend
 4.  Western  Digital
 5.  Buffalo

Ah!  me  surprised  that  500GB's  come  with  USB  powered!!!!  I  had  only  seen  upto  200GB's  portable  pocket  size  ones  with  the  feature.  I  think  am  outdated  here  on  latest  gadgets  and  technology!!!!!

I  don't  think  USB  connected  External  can  hold  the  OS  or  can  be  master.  Can  you  please  throw  some  light  on  how  we  can  do  that?
