After  a  lot  of  deliberation,  trial  and  error,  I  have  narrowed  down  a  design  for  a  custom-made  lighting  console  for  a  4  footer.  The  current  edition  carries  4  T8  tubes  and  is  made  of  MS.

 Here  are  the  preliminary  pictures.

 Suraj,Nice  start...

one  query..  total  4  footer  in  MS.  It  must  be  very  heavy. And  will  it  be  suspended  by  some  chains/ropes  or  will  be  attached  to  supports  on  your  aquarium  stand..?

looking  forward  for  further  progress..  Smile

Give  it  a  nice  black  powder  coating  or  black  matt  paint  job  and  it  would  be  a  sight  to  look  at  Wink  Label  it  with  Aquashoppe.

 Thanks  all.

Niranjan,  I  expect  the  total  weight  of  the  entire  setup  at  4.5-5  kgs.  It  will  be  suspended  with  steel  wires.

Thanks,  Vignesh.  The  inside  is  going  to  be  powder  coated  in  glossy  white  for  max  reflection  and  the  outside  powder  coated  in  matt  black.

Nataraj,  I  think  you  had  the  same  problem  with  my  earlier  pictures  too.  Are  you  on  a  firewall  or  something.  I  upload  my  pictures  on  imageshack.

My  earlier  design  had  visible  screws  outside  which  was  something  that  I  wanted  to  avoid.  In  this  design,  the  lamp  fixtures  will  be  concealed  inside  the  main  panel  and  so  no  screws  are  visible  when  looked  at  from  any  side.

 Hey  Suraj,
Very  neat  design,  i  am  also  in  the  process  of  doing  my  own  Lightin  hood.  Why  didnt  you  try  Aluminum?,  cheaper,  less  weight  and  less  corrosive  with  water  whereas  MS  you  might  end  up  on  the  corrosion  in  long  term,  even  if  you  coat  it  with  Zinc  Chromate.

Do  Anodizing  and  then  paint  it  so  that  there  is  no  corrosion  possibility.

 Hi  PK,

That's  a  great  compliment,  coming  from  a  DIY  Guru  like  yourself.  Would  love  to  see  your  design  as  well.

MS  was  something  that  I  had  worked  with  earlier.  So  I  was  comfortable  with  it.  Never  tried  Aluminium,  thought  it  was  more  expensive.  Anyway  will  definitely  look  at  it  during  the  next  trial.  Will  check  on  anodizing  and  then  powder  coating.

I  will  come  over  to  Chennai  sometime  and  bug  you  about  acrylic.

Very  nice,  Suraj.  Only  thing  that  is  bugging  me  is  that  it  is  a  metal  cover.  Wouldn't  it  be  better  if  you  could  have  used  any  material  that  is  a  non  conductor  of  electricity  as  the  cover?

 Hi  Deba,

Given  a  hobbyist's  finances,  I  am  trying  to  keep  the  costs  to  a  minimum.  Like  I  mentioned  to  PK,  I  felt  aluminium  was  more  expensive.  Spot  welding  is  not  possible.  Rivetting  has  to  be  done  but  needs  expertise  which  will  all  make  the  canopy  expensive.

Most  of  the  wiring  will  be  sleeved  to  avoid  abrasion  with  the  metal  and  will  have  rubber  stoppers  throughout.

Aluminum  is  costlier  than  MS?   Surprised

Is  Aluminum  a  good  option  to  use  for  a  MH  stand?

Yes.  Aluminium  dissipates  heat  better  and  quicker  than  MS.
