Guys, I am planning to make a DIY hood for 1 of my tanks.
Need to know from the DIY experts the following things.
Which wood to choose and why? I am looking for light weight, Strong and rot resistant wood.
How to insulate the system as it is very near to water.
Where do I find reflectors for PLL or T5s. Any specific brands? Plan to use 4 -, 36 watt PLLs.

I have been successful with:
12 mm regular plywood. Outer side done with regular sunmica. Inner side (water facing) done with white regular white paint (3-4 coats - real thick). this will take care of reflection. NO reflectors required. Also paint will protect plywood from water.
For insulation just wrap your electrical cuts with good electric tape. See the post I did, it has pictures and all. If you have switches in your hood, after fixing wires, paint all the metal exposed parts with white paint.

Ply boards for hood are good. Just get good quality board.
For cables you can use flexible pipes which are often used for electrical fittings.
Pass the cables through them, stick them with small clamps.
This hood is made from material given above, it is now 4 years old and has survived two house changes.
