Hi all,
The ghost of growing hairgrass is back.
i have a 14 inch x 8 x 12 tank currently housing 4 loach and a betta.
i will be going for a laterite+sand mix or ADA amazonia 3 liter pack.
i will add some Rocks or driftwood.
The entire fore ground(whatever i can salvage) will be having hairgrass.
if it is driftwood then i'll go for flame moss.
what plant can i keep for the back ground? plants that looks beautiful and don't grow like crazy(how about bolbitis heudelotti which i have?)
i will have DIY CO2, an internal power filter(250 litres an hour), dosing the fertilizer, 15 watt CFL through a table lamp kind of reflector?
planted experts kindly advice as i will start this saturday. |

| Best of luck Muddassar. That's a fabolous plan. Haven't seen a grassland for long.Well I'm just a novice but I think E.Vivipara will do best with hairgrass. And Bolbitis on the driftwood with some moss. |

| Keep a single big tomb stone covered with moss at the focal point. Fill up rest of the tank with Pervula. |

Muddassar, I think you will need more light than a 15W CF to do what you plan to do.

@Abhishek : i have some spare Bolbiti which i will be tying to a small Drift wood and will keep it in the tank on the oppsite corner of the power filter. the power filter will be hidden by rock.
@Tirtha : this time i will be blindly following your method of pruning. besides i am also thinking of a rock with moss on it. but only if a i find a really good rock.
@Bhushan: hmmm....if i go for a 36 watt PLL. will it be enough. also, i have DIY CO2. don't you think that the high light provided will in turn make the CO2 demand to rise up. i mean i will have to pump in more CO2 to maintain a balance. however isn't it that the 15 watt CFL provides around 35-40 watts of output.(sorry but this part confuses me always)
@Retronat: hmmm.....blyxa is not a bad option but it will all look too grassy tupes and also, the colors of both hairgrass and blyxa is same. i want the light green(hairgrass) vs Dark Green combination(bolbitis). or does blxa grows more darker than hairgrass(sorry, i've never seen blyxa). i might go for a 36 watt PLL. |

For your tank size, you should ideally have around 7-8 WPG along with pressurised co2, for good growth buddy...
36watt will be good for mosses only.
The cardinal mistake that almost everybody does is start off with low light and limit the growth possibility. |

15 watt is 15 watt. Period.
You would definitely need to pump in more co2. If you want to have a Rolls Royce, you should not be visiting a Maruti show room. |

Muddassar presently my nano has a fairly thick and lush growth of hair grass growing with DIY CO2.At present it is at the backgriund.I am extending it to reach the foreground.
Lighting 36W CFL.
Will post the pic once the carpet is fromed.
Regards
Dinesh. |

| its not that it will not grow in that light Diwan, but about ideal conditions, IMO. |

Mudassar, keep one thing in mind when your hair grass eventually grows and fills out, it will not be dwarf hair grass in your small tank. The hair grass will be 4-5 inch in height and will obscure everything behind it. For a period of time after pruning the hair grass the tank will look miserable, but will grow back looking good for another period.
You should be looking at some other plant along with hair grass interspersed for the foreground with hair grass making up the entire background. Give this a thought. |

WPG rule doesnt holds for too small or too large tanks.

Common Mudassar, I dint expect that from you..
A 36w PLL with a nice reflector should do(if you are not going for pressurized CO2), concentrate light more towards foreground where your parvula will be.
Have 2 x 1liter bottles in parallel. You can replace brew alternatively for every 4-5 days and will have a constant supply of CO2.
The important thing is to attain balance in light, CO2, dosing and temperature. |

| @ Muddassar, another word of caution. Make sure CO2 is high and steady in that tank. Getting staghorn or Hair algae on Pervula will be worst than your biggest nightmare. |

@ Dev: i agree with you that i should go for a cylinder. i'll do this in coming september.
@Tirtha/Hamza: i'll follow what Hamza has said for the CO2 part. so i guess that will make the CO2 steady(if not as
steady as a pressurized CO2)
@Madan Sir: i never thought of this part. the adjective "dwarf" was in relation to tanks that are huge.... thanks a lot
for bringing this issue. i will perhaps go for 2/3rd of the foreground with the grass but again what plants shall i
chose for the rest of the area? plants that will grow small so that they don't obscure the background plants. i am very limited to ferns and moss till date. never tried any other plants. so, a little help in plant selection will be
required.
@Dinesh: thanks a lot for giving me hope. i think i'll be able to grow it this time.
also, guys i will be going for ADA amazonia II substrate(3 kg pack).
the substrate height in my 14 x 8 x 12 inch aquarium will be:
h=(61 x 3)/(14 x = 1.63inches
length=14
depth(front to back)=8
conversion factor=61.xx
ADA soil volume=3
so i am left with calculating the height of the ADA soil(h), which i have calculated above.(hope the formula is right) |
