Hi,
Its winter now. Did you by any chance use a heater without an automatic cutout or a not working properly cutout in your Oscar tank and forget to switch it off??????That definitely is one time when they sure will leap out of the tank. |

Hi,
My name is Sridhar. I am a Network Engineer by profession working in Wipro Technologies Bangalore. I have been raising fishes for the past 8-9 years. My most prefered fish of all is the Oscar (of which I have 12). I am in search of getting a breeding pair but still not lucky. I have four glass tank (110 gallon, 2x55 gallon and 45 gallon) and two cement tank (one housing 5 Oscars and another one housing varieties of mollies, guppies) and a pond (which has lot of goldfishes and some angles). Of this only two tanks are here in Bangalore and rest of them are at my home place in palghat, kerala.I am planning to add Discus and Arowana also to my collections. Planning to add two more 6 feet tanks soon( one for discus and another for Arowana). |

Hi Sridhar
Good to note you are a great fan of oscar. To find a breeding pair it is always suggested that young juvenilles about 6-7 are let in a larger tank and observed closely. When they grow out the breeding pair establishes always staying together. Then comes the question of laying eggs and fertilising. But once established, they stay out together throughout their life. Very interesting. |

Hi Venki,
I tried that. The five oscars which are in the cement tank was bought when they were 1-2 inch in size and now they have grown close to 10 inches in one and half years. But still no luck. I have another four in a six feet tank of which one seems to be a female. I am still not 100 % sure that it is a female. The have reaches 6 inches in size. I can only be sure when they grow another two inches because that is when they reach sexual maturity. |

Hi Sridhar
The layman's concept of identifying females in oscars. Female's dorsal fin has a black dot / patch.
Of course the venting methods of u shape and v shape for femlae and males respectively.
But on oscars, the pairing is the key. Even if you identify male and female - pairing will not occur if not compatibel.
Oscars are unpredictable hulks. This is the best part.
Also at 1-2" oscars cannt pair. They must be 3-5 " juvenilles. It is only during this time - they show out their dominance and fight for space. On a large tank smaller fishes do not realise or require their need for larger space. Ideally i suggest a 3' tank with 5-6 juveniles. The stronger males attack the weak ones. During this time if there is a female and if our male is attracted he will pair. The female too will adore his dominance and get attracted. They will always stick together. This when noticed must make us separate them and move them to a larger tank. When moved to a larger tank, they surely will breed if is a breeding pair.
But remember oscars are gentle giants. If unobserved the attacks of dominant ones might be fatal for the less dominant ones. |

| You are right. In my case since the five adult ones are in a large cement tank (9 x 3 x 3 Feet) i have never till now seen them fighting. But in my six feet tank initially i had 6 of them but had to remove two smaller ones to a seperate tank as they were constantly fighting with the 2 lager albino's i have. I was surprised as the larger ones were almost double the size of the smaller ones and still they never retaliated. The smaller ones were the common oscars. I have heard that they are the most agressive of all the varieties. Do you have a photo which shows the black spot in the dorsal fins you mentioned in the earlier post. |
