Hey guys,
Came across this new food... "HUMPY HEAD" at Shivajinagar (Bangalore). The LFS said this food is designed to increase hump on cichlids... how true is this statement? |

Thats true.... They are of high percentage of proteins ( over 60%) to boost the fat secretion on the head of the cichlid - Flowerhorns. They does a great enhancing job of specimens with a definition of good hump in their gene. |

Yes, with its high protien contents the hump grows big. Do you know of any LFS in Delhi selling XO Ocean free products like XO Red and Humpy Head/ |

You do not need Humpy head to increase the hump of your Cichlids/FH...
If they have it, any diet with good protein content would increase their hump..
Hikari Foods have a Typical Protein of 47%, Grand Sumo - 48%, ChingMix - 47%...
With Humpy Head, Please be careful.....
Moreover the Ocean free foods are more soluble in water as compared to their Conunterparts of Hikari, Sumo and Ching....Left over food causes worms in the tank.. which I have seen repeatedly in my LFS..
To test soak any Ocean free pellets and Hikari pellets in water for 15 mins.. see which one makes the water more dirty.. this is one of good crude test for a floating pellets...
Also a FH constantly feeding on Ocean Free and a FH feeding on Hikari or other costly FH pellets (ChingMix, GrandSumo).. you would see a noticeable difference in their poo color... Ocean Free fed FH would have its Poo color red or light brown.. whereas for others it would be black...
The red color in the poo only signifies that there are artificial colorant used in the food, excess of which the fish is rejecting...
These colors over a period of time gets deposited underneath the cells and tissues of the fish and thus giving him the color.. this is an artificial method and is no way related to pigment enhancement, which is done by natural spirulina or Astaxanthin...The artificial colorant works much faster and hence the owners become happy.. but other than diseases, they are also temporary..

Not that I have anything against humpy head.. but it has given you good results for two reasons..
1. Your flowerhorn probably had it in its gene..
2. The food has much higher concentration of protein.. if I am not mistaken it is close to 60% protein..
Both of them have worked together to give you the result..
Daily feeding of high protein diet is never good to cichlids in special.. they need more balanced food..
what if I feed you Cheese, Macaroni and Red Meat every day morning, evening, how long you think your digestive system will tolerate...
With FH, I have always seen people hurry.. everymorning checking whether color has come, hump has grown, feed him with more power diets and in the process his digestive system collapses..
Feed him good, keep him well (water) ... he will take his own time depending on his genetics to shape up.. once he blossoms.. you will have a masterpiece...

hi,
i'm new here but very happy about this thread.
just 2 weeks back i bought x0 ocean free humpy head
but thank god i mixed it with taiyo grow small pellets and am feeding my fh and koi.
when i asked my friend in the trade, he explained that these products contain harmful chemicals, colourants and some steroids which will slowly kill the fish
now i have discontinued it
for head i'm buying marine dried shrimp w/o salt from local market. it contains calcium and creatinin
for colouration and white of egg boiled hard and squeezed through mosquito net which looks like worms
for head. in the farms people are using maggots which r rich in protien for sizing and head devolopment |
