Dear Friend,
My next ambitious DIY project!!! - DIY LED Lighting for the Aquariums !!!
Started with many many researches on LEDs.. and found that MaxSpect Light (one of the more used LED fixtures in US) used Edision LEDs (Instead of CREE)... so sourced the LED's directly from Taiwan for test phase...
Then, using the Experts on ReefCentral... started a build on the Driver for the LED using an IC.. invested some thousands into it and later found that the Dimming of the LEds was not working.. so had to re-work on another IC... and just yesterday completed that PCB and tested the LEDs with the new IC... and found that everything worked wonderfully.. 
and i have lights dimming ON and OFF at will!!! so that i can get Whatever color temperature that i want ranging from 6500K to pure Actinics!!!...
the model:
1. 84 LEDS ... 42 Cool Whites, and 42 Royal blues
2. Arranged in a grid of 48" X 18"
3. 60 Degree optics on all LEDs. Can eliminate optics if you are going to keep the LEDS closer to your tank. But i wanted them @ 2 feet from the tank so the Optics.
4. 14 Drivers... to drive these LEDS
5. 2 Dimming signals to Dim the whites and Blues separately. Can create night effect, deep sea effect.. sunrise-sunset effect.. unbelievable the options are!!!!
All LEDS are fixed on the Heat Sinks.. wirings are done... testing is ON...

Super go on the project, all the very best. I am thinking on something similar for my nano project but using simple LED's, nothing jazy this time.
Hey do post some pics of the DIY, also how many Watts are these LED's

@beta, drop in anytime.. it is running now!!! and when dimming it is like a two color disco light!!! ha ha ha ...
@nash, they are 3W LEDs. You will not have enough power if you use the regular LED or even the 1W Leds. We dont get proper drivers to drive them.

How about 5 watt LED's ? Is penetration good enough with 3 W LEDs ? |

While you are sitting idle testing rig up a couple for my 15 x 10 x 12 tanks. 6500 K will do.
Put as much light as you want.  |

madan... 3W is far more than enough.. and with optics it can reach far far depths with high intensity... i am using 60 degrees and i the light reaches the roof !!!! 5W is too much concentrated power in one place.. thats why many dont use the 5,10 or 20W LEDS...
Whola!!! 15X10X12!!!! what is the depth then? r u seriously serious abt it? then you need 8 degree optics to reach that depth. if you are setting something for that tank and if marine, then you can buy a plot in bengalure for the cost into LEDs!!!  ha ha ha
