 Hi  Ratheesh,

It  is  fine  to  have  external  filter  for  your  discus  tank.
Just  make  sure  its  outflow  is  not  too  fast  creating  heavy  turbulence  in  the  tank.

Choose  an  Eheim  canister  filter.  Flow  rates  will  be  much  lower  than  the  Chinese  branded  ones.

How  do  you  determine  what  flow  rate  is  required  for  your  tank?  Is  there  any  formula  or  method  to  choose  the  right  external  canister  filter  for  the  tank?

Eheim  is  a  reputed  brand  and  comes  with  a  2-3  year  warranty  if  bought  from  authorized  dealers.  I  have  Eheim  canisters  working  for  the  last  5  years  without  any  issues.

For  a  39x18x18,  I  would  suggest  a  2215  Classic  as  the  flow  rate  will  be  lesser  than  that  of  a  2217.  Your  discus  will  like  the  gentle  flow  too.

I  am  using  Unimax  500  external  cannister  filter  for  the  past  2  years  in  my  6X2X2'  discus  tank.  To  control  the  turbulance,  I  have  directed  the  spray  bars  to  the  side  of  the  glass.  Also  there  is  a  flow  control  valve  in  the  cannister  filter  itself.  The  discus  are  doing  fine  and  no  problems  encountered  till  date.

Hi  venki,  thats  a  good  option.  a  filter  with  flow  control  valve  is  good  idea.

For  flow  rate,  usually  3-5  times  tank  volume  per  hour  is  a  good  number  in  NON  PLANTED  tanks  and  for  planted  tanks  8-10  times  tank  volume  per  hour.

 Hello  Ratheesh,

As  Mortis  said,  the  "Turnover"  should  be  a  factor  of  3  for  fish  accustomed  to  lakes  and  slow  moving  rivers.  It  should  be  above  7  for  fish  accustomed  to  environments  with  relatively  fast  current.  (This  is  for  non-planted  tanks.  I  am  not  sure  if  this  is  also  applicable  for  planted  tanks.)

Also,  in  my  opinion,  given  the  relatively  delicate  nature  of  Discuss,  a  higher  turnover  for  the  tank  (and  a  higher  flow-rate  for  the  filter)  would  be  more  preferred.

I  am  considering  buying  a  Canister  Filter  from  this  website  suitable  for  a  6x2x2:
 http://www.shopatsimba.com/categories_list.php?cPath=334_339_341&page=1&sort=5a

The  prices  there  seem  relatively  better  than  buying  them  at  LFS  in  Bombay.

Also,  I  was  under  the  impression  that  prices  for  Eheim  are  considerably  more  expensive  than  Boyu  (for  filters  which  comparable  specification).  However,  this  does  not  seem  to  be  the  case.

 Thank  you,
 Sid

 Hi  Venky,

I  dont  think  those  would  be  flow  control  valves,  they  may  be  more  like  Quick  Disconect  valves  like  the  ones  that  are  available  in  Eheim  filters  as  well.  They  are  meant  to  close  the  intake  and  output     when  you  want  to  Clean  the  canister.
Adjusting  the  flow  with  it  could  damage  the  pump.  Maybe  one  of  the  reasons  why  your  canister  pump  had  gone  bad  sometime  back.  Not  sure  if  you  had  the  valves  turned  back  then.  If  you  reduce  the  Input  Valve,   you  run  the  chance  of  your  pump  running  dry,  if  you  reduce  the  output  valve,  you  run  a  chance  of  back  pressure  which  may  damage  your  impeller  and  shaft.

Personally  i  feel  if  you  want  a  gentle  flow  with  your  canister  its  not  very  difficult  to  do  so.  All  you  do  is  get  a  drill  machine  and  a  small  drill  bit,  Drill  a  lot  more  holes  in  the  spray  bar  at  different  angles.  This  will  reduce  the  flow  across  the  tank.  I  have  infact  drilled  one  spray  bar  all  around.  More  holes  pointing  towards  the  back  wall.  This  has  reduced  the  flow  drastically  and  is  quiet  gentle.

 Warm  Regards

 Ratheesh,

Controlling  flow  can  hurt  your  pumps.

If  you  are  talking  discus,  the  ultimate  filter  is  the  sponge  filter.

This  advice  comes  from  years  of  keeping  discus  and  breeding  them.

Hi  nytyn,  i  have  already  placed  a  sponge  filer  for  them  .
But  it  is  a  planted  tank.  so,  is  it  not  a  better  idea  to  place  an  external  filter?
I  can  do  water  changes  twice  a  week  thats  the  reason  i  am  decided  to  place  an  external  filter.
