Hey Guys
Had a spare 18x15x15 tank on the planted tanks rack, the tank had bombed cause it had Amazonia II, No plants, No CO2 and High Light ..... I was successfully growing a Blue Green Algae Carpet , The glass on all sides was covered with brown algae and i could not even see through it. On 6th Nov'09 decided to give this tank a makeover. I did not plan the scape as such, just went with the flow
Specifications
Tank : 18x15x15
Lighting : 1x36 Watts PLL 6500K : 7 Hrs
Filteration: Hagen HOB
Substrate : ADA Amazonia II & White Sand
CO2 : Pressurized at 2 bps, diffused through Ceramic Diffuser
Dosing : ADA DO AQUA! Be Green and ADA Step 2
Plants : Java Moss
Dwarf Hair Grass
E. Tenellus
Marsilea Crenata
Fauna : None as of now
All plants were grown emmersed, so they look very big after planting ... especially the Tenellus, hopefully once they settle down and start sprouting submersed leaves, the scape would look much better.

Hi Seetharam
The scape is looking good....I am sure in a months time its gonna be a bueaty! BTW a heads up on the white sand I had major issues with it in a clients tank it was mainly due to the high silica content in it. Keep an eye out on the bio filter. Another pointer is it possible to move the hang on to the side glass instead of the back glass?
All the Best!! |

Hey Thanks Harshal
I had the same concerns when using the white sand .... anyways decided to go ahead with it, will check on the water parameters, if its too bad then might change it.
Yep, should be able to move the HOB out onto the side ..... just that it will show up easily when you see the entire rack .... so though of leaving it at the back for now. |

Nice concept. Just two suggestions---(1) can you make planted portion more steep---almost like a mountain slope and (2) how about black/dark background?
You can also try a slightly longish rock protruding hanging over the sand.

Seetharam, you said you had Cyanobacteria layer on the substrate. Did you cure the substrate before you have started the setup? If not, go for Amoxi treatment before the biologocal filtration starts setting in. And check the nitrate level of your tank. |

@ Bappa: Thanks ..... I did make the planted portion as steep as possible ..... Right now the plants seem to be hovering over the rocks as the tenellus is grown emmersed and the emmersed leaves are larger and tall. Hoping once the submersed leaves start coming the scape will look better.
@ Anand: Thanks, No Fauna decided as of now, i was thinking of making it my second tank for Crystal Red Shrimps, but will finalize that once i see how the water parameters are.
@ Tirtha : The Blue Green algae layer was so thick it literally peeled off like a sheet of paper, removed all of it carefully, when setting i did like 5 water changes, would fill the tank up and drain.
Can you give me more details on why you are asking to do a Amoxi treatment? |

HI Seetharam,
The scape is looking great. As harshal menitioned, should give it a month to month and a hlf to see it turn into a stunner.
Have you deceided on the forground plant?

Surya |

Another interesting thread, Seetharam.
Am going to follow this thread to watch this tank grow into a stunner.

Buddy, BG algae is such a nasty stuff, that it can screw up the tank environment in no time. If it goes out of control, it will kill fishes as well as the plants. I know, they can be pilled off easily but the remains will be always there.
They thrives under very low (Almost 0) nitrate level and poor water circulation. So increasing the Nitrate level and water circulation can stop them spreading but won't be able to wipe them out.
So you have to use antibiotics. But in other hand, using Amoxi will damage the biological filtration. As the tank is new it's always better to go under Amoxi treatment before it starts to settle in.
Otherwise you can go with erythromycin. It will not damage the Biological filtration but bit slower than Amoxi. |

Got it .... Thanks for the info Tirtha .... Let me observe the tank for a few days for any signs of disaster, then probably will go with erythromycin ..... I hate dosing any anti biotics to my tanks |

i like it the way it is.
but i guess hairgrass should grow in the middle portions and the tenellus should grow right next to the rocks(right now it is opposite). and tenellus should be in front of the hair grass as hairgras really grows very tall. |

@ Mudassar : Thanks .... I dont think Dwarf Hairgrass grows taller than E. Tenellus , unless it is Vivipara. Thats the reason why Hairgrass has been kept in the middle.
@ Saurav : Thanks .... As with my other tanks, will keep updating as the tank progresses |
