The  Sunday  started  with  a  call  to  Mudassir  (icecube)  to  get  hold  of  some  BBS  for  the  Texas  fry  which  are  due  to  hatch  on  Tuesday.  The  talks  then  turned  into  a  collection  trip.  Picked  up  Mudassir  at  around  12  and  by  then  he  had  managed  to  arrange  for  some  plastic  packaging  bags  from  the  LFS.  Also  joining  us  in  the  trip  was  Salman  (a  planted  tank  freak)  and  a  non-fish  friend  of  his  Subbu.

The  plan  was  the  twin  lakes  of  OsmanSagar  and  HimayatSagar.  First  we  headed  towards  Osmansagar  and  on  reaching  the  lake  noticed  that  the  road  leading  to  the  trail  head  was  closed  for  some  maintenance  and  had  to  park  the  car  800m  away.  This  was  followed  by  a  one  km  hike  to  the  water  body.

The  water  here  was  what  had  flowed  down  from  the  main  lake.  The  sight  of  the  fish  was  very  inviting  and  provided  the  necessary  energy  to  beat  the  heat.  But  the  fist  step  into  the  water  proved  that  the  terrain  beneath  the  water  was  least  suitable  for  standing  with  lots  of  crevasse  in  the  rocks  beneath  and  every  step  had  to  be  taken  with  extreme  care.  Also  the  gaps  in  the  rocks  proved  to  help  the  hunted  and  the  hunters  were  left  in  vain  after  30  minutes  of  effort  in  scorching  sun.  We  then  scouted  along  to  another  pool  of  water  shaded  by  walls  of  rocks  from  all  four  sides.  The  number  of  fish  spotted  here  were  aplenty  but  the  story  remained  the  same...  expect  for  one  barb  who  took  pity  on  us  and  walked...err  swam  into  our  net.

Our  patience  had  been  tested  and  Enough  was  enough.  So  we  decided  to  head  to  HimayatSagar.  We  walked  the  1km  back  and  decided  to  lunch.  The  lunch  was  a  egg  bajji  and  a  samosa  drowned  with  the  help  of  a  Limca.  Salman  made  a  statement  here  that  Limca  is  the  most  energizing  drink  and  consists  on  Barley  water,  lemon  and  ginger.  The  claim  was  also  made  that  it  was  prescribed  by  doctors  during  fevers.  I  was  just  standing  there  wondering  why  my  parents  always  took  me  to  the  Quacks  and  not  to  the  doctors  who  prescribed  such  tasty  medicines.

So  the  car  vroomed  and  we  headed  to  Himayat  Sagar.  We  noticed  the  earth  movers  at  work  and  looks  like  they  are  expanding  the  lake  just  before  the  monsoons.  We  parked  our  car  and  walked  towards  the  water.  Giving  us  company  for  the  rest  of  the  day  was  a  Gang  on  Boozers  doing  all  the  types  of  antics..  Loud  music,  dances,  snake  dance,  verbal  abuse,  beating  each  other  up,  crying  and  everything  else  you  can  imagine.  Mudassir  was  wise  enough  to  find  a  trail  which  helped  us  bypass  these  guys.  All  the  worries  were  put  to  rest  by  the  lovely  sight  of  the  water  in  the  lake.

Salman  decided  to  stay  out  of  the  water  and  Mudassir  and  I  entered  the  water.  The  first  catch  of  the  day  with  a  casual  scoop  was  a  channa.  We  then  spotted  a  school  of  chromides  and  so  decided  to  go  the  old  school  way  of  catching  with  the  duppata.  The  first  catch  had  a  surprise  in  "Parambassis  lala  -  Indian  Glass  Fish"  with  a  lovely  orange  colouration.  The  surprise  would  not  remain  surprise  anymore  and  every  catch  atleast  had  two  one  inch  lalas.  The  chromides  caught  were  pretty  mostly  around  3/4  inch  in  size.  The  mama  and  papa  though  sighted  managed  to  evade  us  all  the  time.  The  search  continued  for  the  channa  but  were  not  sighted  any  more.  Other  catch  for  the  day  was  a  small  goby  and  lot  of  barbs.  The  PITA  were  the  thorny  aquatic  plant  which  were  growing  submerged.  This  caused  lot  of  bruises  all  over  hands  and  legs.

The  time  was  six  and  it  was  getting  darker  and  we  decided  to  call  it  the  day  there.  We  did  a  water  change  and  also  sorted  out  the  fish  caught.  As  we  headed  back  to  the  city  the  beautiful  sunset  bade  us  farewell.

Very  true.  Limca  should  be  had  with  feni  at  room  temperature.  A  cure  for  several  diseases.

Looks  like  you  guys  had  a  great  trip.  Thumb Up

Thanks  a  lot  Trevor,  Vignesh,  Nayak  for  your  appreciation.  We  sure  did  have  lot  of  fun.

Hamza  thanks  a  lot  for  pointing  out  the  error.  I  was  trying  to  ID  this  fish  online  and  saw  this  link  mention  it  as  ranga...   Sad

 http://www.fishtankforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=132&t=1428

Right  now  the  lalas  and  the  chromides  are  settling  down  in  a  tank  with  some  rotalas....  this  is  my  first  real  experience  with  native  fish.   :)

Vignesh  why  dont  you  make  a  trip  to  Hyd  and  we  can  sure  manage  lot  of  lalas  for  you...  Dream  come  true  would  be  to  see  the  Fish  Chasers  crew  come  down  to  explore  the  water  bodies  of  AP  and  dust  off  some  of  their  knowledge  on  us.   Welcome

Please  do  help  ID  the  plant  and  the  fish  in  the  pic.

Ranga  is  regular  transparent  variety  of  glassfish.
This  is  a  different  fish,  It  has  a  shorter(yellow-orange)colored  body  with  red  fins,  I  wonder  why  it  dint  gain  popularity,  theres  hardly  any  proper  information  on  them.
I  looted  half  a  dozen  of  these  from  Salman's  tank  Very Happy
I'll  take  some  pictures  of  these,  once  they  color  up  in  my  tank.

Native  gurus,  please  share  your  experiences  about  this  fish.
