 Hi,
If  you  are  interested  in  DIY  it  is  very  simple  thing  to  make  and  is  very  cheap.  what  you  need  is  below  material  which  comes  for  less  than  Rs.  100

 1)  Aluminium  sheet  (  you  will  get  it  in  any  hardware  shop  )
 2)  strips  pf  mirrors  (  you  will  get  it  from  glass  shop  normally  it  is  available  as  waste  from  them  as  they  remove  strips  from  side  of  mirror  for  different  dimensions  I  could  get  )
I  could  get  2  strips  for  Rs.  10.  which  I  used  for  my  1  foot  T5s,

 3)  A  1  inch  chissel  which  is  used  to  cut  wood  (  which  I  had  and  is  available  in  any  hardware  shop.

As  shown  in  figure  cut  your  aluminium  sheet  with  a   size  2*x+y+z  ,  where  x  is  the  width  of  the  mirror  strip,  y  is  the  width  of  the  light  fitting  and  z  is  about  1cm  if  the  mirror  is  of  3mm  thickness.
As  shown  in  figure  make  4  small  cuts  on  aluminium  sheet  near  the  centre  with  chessel  which  can  be  bend  and  can  support  mirror  strip  attached  to  the  sheet  the  extreme  end  can  be  bend  along  the  side  of  mirror  strip  which  can  hold  the  mirror  properly.  I  had  this  made  and  the  light  effect  is  very  good  as  mirror  reflect  the  light  almost  entirely.

 with  best  regards,
 Sudheer

 HI  suhail,
I  saw  your  message  late.  The  mirror  strip  need  to  be  just  2.5  inches  or  so  for  this  purpose  and  we  can  choose  a  thin  may  be  2mm  mirror  which  will  not  be  that  heavy.  I  am  using  2  small  screws  to  keep  that  on  top  of  my  cross  bars  above  tank.
 with  best  regards,
 Sudheer

While  I'm  not  absolutely  certain  and  cant  dig  up  the  reference  again,  I've  read  somewhere  that  aluminum  reflectors  are  more  efficient  in  light  reflectance  as  compared  to  silver  backed  mirrors.  Additionally,  there  is  diffraction  loss  due  to  the  combination  of  glass/silver  or  other  reflective  material  in  a  regular  mirror.  Silver  reflect  more  red  and  yellow  tones  than  their  aluminum  counterparts  which  reflect  bluer  tones.
It'd  best  to  use  an  aluminium  reflector  instead.

 Assasin,

I  use  the  reflector  available  with  Philips  dealers.

It  comes  in  4  feet  length,  and  you  can  cut  it  with  a  scissors,  to  make  2  feet  ones.  Costs  Rs.120  with  my  dealer.

Its  very  light,  and  you  can  slip  it  in  between  your  light  and  hood.  Makes  such  a  big  difference  as  it  makes  the  light  output  look  3  times  brighter.

 Hi,

I  am  new  to  IAH  though  i  have  been  using  IAH  for  past  7  years.  Sorry  if  i  am  stealing  this  thread.  I  tried   to  make  a  parabolic  reflector  with  dimension  i  gave  to  a  fabricator  in  ambatur.  It  was  difficult  for  them  to  do.  I  was  specific  on  the  shape  of  the  parabola  as  it  can  focus  all  light  straight  down  if  the  T5  is  placed  at  its  focal  length.  Since  then  i  was  trying  to  find  a  ready  made  PARBOLIC  REFLECTOR...in  Chennai.

What  ever  reflector  is  used  wont  a  casing  be  important???

Wont  the  evaporation  from  the  tank  alter  the  reflective  properties  or  could  form  a  scum  on  the  tube  itself.  It  would  be  worse  if  an  air  stone  is  used  as  water  particals  will  definitly  add  dirt  on  the  tube  when  it  breaks  on  water  surface.

What  happens  when  lights  are  used  in  closed  hood  ...  Still  worse  ..am  i  right?

So  i  tried  to  find  a  casing  for  a  4ft  T5  with  a  parabolic  reflector  in  chennai  still  in  vain.

Has  any  one  tried  a  fresnel  to  direct  light  straight  down.  All  these  came  to  mind  to  increase  efficiency  and  penetration  to  a  depth  of  2  ft  with  easily  available  material  (  cost  effictive)

Experts  please  throw  light  on  this.

 Suresh
