 Hello  Namita,

I  went  through  all  your  earlier  posts.  There  was  no  reference  as  to  who  you  were.  Hence  the  error.

Abhis9  had  posted  the  comment  in  jest.  He  is  a  very  dedicated  hobbyist  who  we  respect.

Kindly  go  through  the  old  archives  in  Discus  discuss.  You  will  find  a  lot  of  information  there.

 And,  Welcome  to  IAH.

 Hi,
no  offence  Namita.  but  the  persons  here  you  are  talking  with  are  senior  members.  They  all  have  gained  lots  of  experiences  for  the  last  10-15  years.  You  will  understand  the  hobby  and  will  be  able  to  know  about  different  kinds  of  important  things  if  you  go  through  the  posts  here.  And  please  ask  questions  if  you  are  facing  any  problems  with  the  informations  present  here,  like  other  newcomers  rather  that  attacking  others  from  the  very  beginning.  This  way  later  on  you  will  miss  good  ideas  and  experiences  from  the  senior  members.  And  that  is  not  a  good  way  to  learn  the  hobby.  And  regarding  the  gender,  you  did  not  mention  your  name  before  your  last  post,  how  can  you  expect  that  everyone  here  will  understand  who  you  are?  Go  through  new  members  and  beginners  very  well.  I  hope  you  will  be  a  great  hobbyist  in  near  future.
 Thaks

Ya,  but  it  is  not  just  a  common  sense,  "Nam"  can  also  be  a  male  name  as  the  username  is  not  necessarily  always  be  the  first  name  of  the  holder,  right?  it  may  be  a  nick  name  or  other  too.  Anyways,  update  your  location  and  welcome  to  the  IAH.
 Thanks

Ok  lets  get  back  to  the  topic.

@Abhis9:  Awaiting  update  from  you  on  this  open  top  tank  as  I  am  myself  planning  to  remove  the  hood  on  my  current  2  footer  and  use  a  suspended  lighting.
 My  fears:
 1)  Dust  settling  on  the  water  surface.  I  hope  an  air  stone  will  keep  the  surface  agitated  enough  to  not  let  dust  settle  on  the  surface  and  form  any  kind  of  film.

 2)  Insects  falling  inside  the  tank.  Although  there  are  no  lizards  et  all  in  my  house  as  the  windows  have  mesh.

 3)  The  biggest  threat  is  from  ignorant  visitors  putting  hand  and  other  foreign  objects  inside  the  tank   Chuckle

Anyway  the  idea  of  a  net  or  wire  mesh  on  the  top  has  got  me  thinking.  looking  forward  to  your  design  in  case  you  implement  it.  Also  any  other  members  who  already  have  done  this,  a  photo  will  be  appreciated.

 Regards,
 Ranjit

EDIT:  Fear  no  4)  Tank  inhabitants  seizing  the  opportunity  of  an  open  top  to  venture  out  of  the  tank   Sad

I  have  not  used  any  kind  of  wire  mesh  or  net  on  my  tanks,  but  as  I  have  suggested  before  you  can  make  an  digital  8  like  structure  with  the  wooden  frame.  and  keeping  the  net  or  mesh  on  the  inner  part  of  it.  Though  sounds  like  an  experiment,  but  I  think  you  can  think  of  it.  Or  else  keep  the  tank  little  bit  high,  so  that  you  can  copeup  with  your  biggest  threat.   ROFL
Another  thing  is  that,  I  have  one  2  footer  planted  with  open  top.  And  the  fishes  regularly  take  the  chance  of  jumping  out  of  it  and  put  themselves  and  myself  in  trouble  Crying or Very sad
 Thanks

 Abhida,
For  quite  a  while  we  strayed  far  away  from  the  topic. In  fact,a  staunch  veggie  by  choice  like  me  was  compelled  to  ogle  at  sausages!Adding  salt  to  the  wound  was  to  make  a  mechanical  man  like  me  stare  at  a  Picasso! This  is  like  adding  a  discus  to  a  reef  tank!
Thanks  to  the  ever  witty  Nayak  we  are  back  to  where  we  left.
Have  you  taken  into  consideration  the  extra  electricity  you  will  have  to  pay  for  in  the  winter  months  with  the  open  top  tank? In  all  probability  the  300W  RENA  you  possess  will  have  to  work  a  lot  more  or  even  may  not  be  enough  to  keep  the  correct  discus  temperature!

ROFL  See  how  volatile  this  forum  atmosphere  has  turned  out  to  be!
Winter  temperatures  can  drop  to  as  low  as  12  deg  C  in  Kolkata!Discus  usually  do  not  appreciate  such  extremes.

 Hi  Abhi,
A  show  biotope  tank  for  discus:

 1.  Preferably  open  with  min  72'  length,  18'-24'  depth,  24'  height  for  water  coloumn  +  4'  height  top  coloumn  if  its  glass,  if  you  are  trying  a  pond  setup  I  guess  youll  have  a  bigger  space  to  work  with

 2.  Dust  free  environment  as  much  as  possible;  can  counter  with  a  skimmer  though

 3.  Thai  (buddha)  bamboos,  moneyplants  and  other  aquatic  root  bearers;  biotope  feature

 4.  Floating  plants  to  avoid  discus  from  jumping;  this  comes  with  0%  guarantee

 5.  Hanging  lights  for  the  plants  and  the  aquarium;  lights  are  a  must

 6.  Finest  sand  for  gravel  or  gravel-less;  biotope  feature

 7.  Bogwood  simulating  roots  of  huge  trees;  this  also  helps  as  a  source  for  tannin

 8.  Minimal  human  intervention  around  the  tank;  I  kinda  know  itsa  showtank  but  place  it  somewhere  where  there  is  not  much  traffic

 9.  Toss  in  some  boulders  and  not  small  rock;  could  create  caves  n  places  for  hiding

 10.  Go  for  an  external  canister  type  filter  along  with  any  others

 11.  Ottos  instead  of  plecos;  plecos  are  known  to  attach  themselves  to  discus  and  cause  skin  damage

Please  understand  that  anything  that  has  discus  and  gravel  together  calls  for  heavy  maintenance.  So  don't  overstock....

Ive  had  discus  in  me  rack  without  any  hoods  or  gravel  for  almost  7  years  now.  Ive  lost  only  1  Red  Melon  so  far  due  (scared  the  shitout)jumping.  Yeah  they  do  jump  and  will  if  they  get  scared.  But  not  as  much  as  other  fish  would.  For  all  I  know  if  you  scare  the  shit  out  of  a  bottom  dweller  he  might  pop  out  of  the  tank.

As  far  as  the  others  said  about  insects  and  debris  falling  to  your  tank,  they  are  110%  correct.  Youll  often  find  moths  and  other  insects  floatin  dead  on  the  surface.  Also  I  know  for  a  fact  that  discus  will  get  less  scared  when  viewed  from  above  since  their  vision  periphery  is  planar.  So  a  pond  type  setup  does  well,  although  cleaning  it  is  a  task  because  you  cant  see  the  shit...

Best  luck  and  keep  us  posted....

 Cheers
 Pushkaraj

You  definately  can  unless  your  room  tempreture  drops  below  24  degrees,  rare  possibility  in  India...
