Hi guyz
Due to increasing need for my planted tank, and upcomming marine tank, to have a chiller,i went to the lfs to get a chiller. But quality chillers were well beyond my reach as of now.So i cam hom and stumbled upon this idea to make a chiller myself.
I plan to do this in a very indegenious way, stealing the concept from desert coolers. The whole cabinet of the cooler, wid wood wool(khus) and stuff is an effectice cooler. The temperature of the the water in tank of the cooler stays somewhere less than 20C.I dont kno if all coolers have this result, but mine does.So using this concept for chilling an aquarium shudnt b a harm. And far better than a convetional chiller cost-wise.The only chiller my LFS had costed 17k, while a small coooler costs somwr around Rs500.The chiller for the planted wont b a big problem, but for the marine i ll be needing a plastic based material.
Need Help people....Tell me if this idea has any potential do i may begin work,or its jst a waste of time.

Just save up and buy a chiller.
It looks much better than a DIY, and doesn't give much problems. |

the only thing is u should have a little or thorough knowledge of how a chiller is built then its very simple mechanics ,
for eg u can have a pipe running through your fridge to cool down the water its as simple as it gets ,to cool anthing u need codensor and the place where u wanna chill the place where evouporation takes place and cooling also,
the main thing in developing a chiller is power usage as considered for your aqaurium,a fridge costs just 5000rs nowadays that make ice all year round, but we need cool water
i suggest to contact people who make car acs, because its very compact if u cant find blue print or idea on how to make a chiller
go on do it dont be scared,it all depends on how u apply |

Another simple idea thats working for me this summer.
2x 4" Exhaust fans blowing directly on the water surface. Keeps the temp about 27-29c. |

Ashwin,
Exhaust fans work for people staying in dry areas (NCR say). I guess, you are staying in one of those areas as you are using cooler (thats what most of us use in Delhi). However, with humidity (July_sept), this will be ineffective. So you can use the following combination:
1. Exhaust fans (should work reasonably well during peak but dry summer)
2a. Ice packs (in packets) in water for 5-6 times a day OR
2b. Take a thermo col box. Drill two holes in them for a pipe to pass in through the hole and another to pass out. Fill the thermo col with as much as ice possible, Now take a pipe that takes water from your tank, passes through the box and then flows back to your tank. Try and ensure that as much of the pipe (say 2 metres) passes through the box. If the water flow through the pipe is moderate, and if ice inside the box is sufficient (around 5 kg), then this should work for a while. This is a crude method, but worth trying as there is hardly any investment in it.

| Well said Bappa, few more hints, earthen vessels for holding water, wet cover on earthen vessel, a fan on the wet cover, vessel standing on sand and water willl make a good cheap chiller IMO. |

Yes, Dev it will and should keep the water atleast 5-6 degrees cooler. My only worry is whether it would be effective with salt water? Frankly, I don't the answer.

You need to check that out right?
As in I believe that people have not done any journals on this on forums and if they have done, I do not know it. More over, I think they have hardly come out with the results. I want to do this in a fresh water ambiance, but do not have the time.
If you do, please do a journal and share the results with us on IAH. |
