|
|
Hello everybody,
(I especially need help from those of you who keep "monster" sized tanks.)
Does anyone have any references (safety, side-effects, dosage, etc) about the use of Sodium Thiosulfate De-chlorination Crystals in aquariums?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_thiosulfate
Till now, I had been using the liquid "De-chlorinator" to treat the water before I add it to my tanks. However, as the liquid takes 30 minutes or so to complete it's work, I have to first fill buckets and then add the liquid and then (after 30 mins) add the treated water to my tanks.
This system of using buckets was working for my 1 footer, 2 footer and 3 footer tanks, but is definitely unsustainable for my 6 footer (180 gal).
The LFS guys at kurla recommended using this "Hypo" crystal which (they say) acts instantly. They say I can directly add tap water to my tank (using a pipe/hose) and add these crystals (with the fish still in it).
Can any of the experts confirm this? (and what is the precise dosage of these "Hypo" crystals (ie. number of crystals per liter or gallon)?
Thank you,
Sid |

Hi Sid,
The bottled solution you were using so far was nothing but liquid form of sodium thiosulfate.
Go for Hypo Crystals without any fear, absolutely safe for fishes. Pretty common with discus keepers/breeders who perform daily water-changes.
Dosage: 1 crystal per 10Gal, will cloud water for sometime though great thing for neutralizing chlorine instantly. |

Thank you Yogesh and Nayak!
You just saved me a ton of money on "De-chlorinators"!
Cheers,

You dont really need to wait for half an hour for the 'local' dechlorinators to work. They are sodium thiosulphate only. A couple of minutes is enough |

I am new to using hypo so want to know will a overdose of hypo kill my fishes. I have a 60 gal (three and a half feet) in which i will have to use 6 crystals and a 32 gal (two feet) in which i have to use 3 crystal. Is that how i am supposed to use them. I don't want to nuke the tanks and have fatalities ???
