 Hello  Friends,

First  of  all  I  would  love  to  thank  the  admin(s)  and  staff  members  for  creating  and  maintaining  such  a  wonderful  community  where  everyone  is  ready  to  help  newbies  and  share  their  knowledge,  it  just  feels  like  family!

I  am  all  ready  to  buy  a  2  foot  cube  24'x24'x24'  tank  (my  2nd  tank),

 Fishes
I  am  thinking  of  getting  two  yellow  parrot  cichlids

 Gravel
I  am  thinking  of  getting  black  gravel.

 Background
Black  background  or  something  very  dark

 Filter
Have  no  idea  guys,  tell  me  the  best  one.

 Aeration
Thinking  of  18"  stick  (no  idea  if  that  comes  in  this  size)

 Hiding  Space
Already  have  extra  one  from  my  4  footer.

Friends  this  is  my  first  attempt  on  keeping  parrot  cichlids,  however  from  my  previous  experiences  I  have  learned  that  LFS  guys  themselves  have  no  or  very  little  knowledge  on  what  is  best  for  a  specific  fish.

Please  guide  me  regarding  this.  Since  nothing  is  finalized  yet,  anything  and  everything  can  be  changed  except  for  the  tank  dimensions  :)

Note:  I  will  have  no  problems  in  upgrading  the  tank  to  a  bigger  one,  once  the  fishes  outgrow  this  one.

 Hi  Deepak,

If  you  want  to  keep  parrots  Cichlids,  try  to  keep  more  in  numbers,  they  looks  pretty  good  when  kept  as  colony...

For  food,  you  can  go  for  Any  kind  of  cichlid  food  (Hikari  Boigold,  JBL,  NLS,  Oceanfree,  etc).  also  you  can  feed  them  Freezed  blood  worms....

 Good  luck...

I  guess  Parrots  tend  to  be  more  on  the  aggressive  side,so  binding  them  into  the  tank  specified  can  be  a  bit, problematic. If  you  get  a  pair(male  female/male  male)  then  there  would  be  decent  action  in  the  tank, and  I  think  theres  an  ample  chance  that  this  could  happen  as  your  LFS  dosnt  know  much  about  the  fish, forget  about  telling  a  male  from  a  female.
They  get  to  a  decent  size  too,~6",so  housing  two  big  aggressive  fish  in  the  tank  will  be  a  problem.
Still  wait  for  the  experts  to  suuggest  you,I  do  not  have  personal  experience  with  parrots. But  my  guesses  are  that  bieng  a  GM  fish, they  will  be  aggressive.

 Best  oF  Luck!

with  lot  of  hiding  place,  keeping  two  of  them  in  this  tank  won't  be  a  problem.Adult  parrots  shows  dimorphism  and  with  some  experience  u  would  be  able  to  differenciate  male  from  the  female.  i'll  suggest  u  to  read  more  abt  them  before  going  for  the  final  purchase.

 Hi  Ashwin,

I  will  read  more  about  them,  before  making  a  decision  about  them.  Yea  LFS  does  not  know  much  about  them,  If  it  would  be  totally  incompatible  for  me  to  house  a  pair,  I  will  consider  some  other  fish  then.

 Hi  Deepak,

Its  like  more  the  cichlids  in  the  tank,  more  real-estate  they  want  to  grab.
So  appx  at  4sft,  each  guy  ll  get  just  1sft,  not  that  great  for  that  big  growing  fish.

If  it  were  tetrras/live-bearers/barbs  then  your  8cft  will  suit  more  of  them.

If  it  isnt  for  the  space  at  home,  try  getting  more  wider  tank(and  not  just  volume)  for  more  cichlid  keeping.

 Hope  it  helps.
 Good  luck

Thanks  a  ton  for  your  reply  bro,  I  will  have  a  4ft  tank  available  by  the  end  of  this  year,  so  I  can  shift  them  there  after  6  months.
 Will  this  change  anything?

As  a  fello  Hy-badi  says  here.

 "Fight-  hai"!

Would  be  tough  man,  6  months  is  a  long  time  for  growout.
May  be  2  months  in  a  healthy  environment  and  you  ll  see  the  agression  and  their  greed.  Not  worried  about  parrots  but  the  terror's  aggression.
 So  3  months?

Seeing  your  enthu-  I  hope  you  havent  got  the  4pc  already  Very Happy  ,  else  hold  on...  you  always  can  get  that  common  fish.

 Cheers!

 Dear  Saikumar,

"Bhai  agar  Fight  Hai,  to  sirf  parrot  hi  daal  denge"   Drinking

Yup  this  time,  I  thought  I  will  be  proactive  and  ask  the  experts  before  getting  any  fish.

How  many  days  do  you  think  should  I  cycle  the  tank  before  introducing  the  parrot  cichlids  in  the  aquarium.

I  just  absolutely  love  parrots  they  are  my  second  favorite  fish  after  the  koi's,  after  this  2  footer  I  have  plans  for  a  300-500  gallon  monster  tank  for  my  koi's  by  the  year  end  (will  ask  a  lot  of  questions  about  that  after  completing  this  one)

Deepak,as  already  adviced  by  another  member,  two  parrots  in  a  two  feet  tank  is  not  a  good  idea. They  are  after  all  cichlids  and  would  pick  on  one  another  today  or  tommorrow.Aggressiveness  is  in  their  blood.Try  and  keep  some  smaller  species  like  malawi  or  african  ones  like  kenyi,  rusty, yellow  labs  etc...And  green  terror  and  parrots  in  the  same  tank,  no  way  if  you'd  ask  me.
For  filtration,  you  can  start  off  with  a  power  filter, top  filter  or  a  sponge  filter  or  go  for  an  external  right  away.
You  can  set  up  the  tank  with  the  filters  on  for  a  few  days,  say  about  2  before  adding  the  fish.I  add  cichlids  to  my  tank  after  about  2  hours  of  setting  up  the  tank   Chuckle
The  choice  of  gravel  is  very  important  while  setting  up  a  cichlid  tank. They  are  natural  diggers  and  are  bound  to  upset  your  decor.I'd  advice  to  go  for  a  thin  layer  of  sand  with  lots  of  hiding  spaces  in  the  form  of  rocks.

 Dear  Hrishi,

Thanks  a  lot  for  your  reply  bro,

the  only  reason  I  was  getting  that  tank  built  was  to  keep  parrots  bro   Sad  I  really  like  them   Sad

I  really  like  fishes  which  go  big,  and  parrot  can  grow  up  to  8  inches,  and  they  are  just  beautiful.  My  plan  was  to  get  them  in  this  2  footer  and  later  shift  them  to  my  4  footer  after  6  months.
