Hi  ...first  time  writing  to  any  aqua  forum.Based  in  Navi  Mumbai.  Earlier  I  had  a  small  planted  52ltrs  tank.  Last  month  upgraded  to  self  designed  and  made  this  250ltrs  fresh  water  tank

 Tank  Specs:
 Size  WXHXD:  3X2X1.5ft

 CO2:  DIY  CO2

Lighting:  Azoo  128  watts  light  for  daily  8  hours  (2  pm  to  10  pm)

Substrate:  Azoo  3  kgs  plant  grower  bed,  substrate  of  golden  sand  about  2  inches  deep  .  At  back,  plant  grower  bed  is  more  then  3  inches  deep  for  deep  rooting  plants.

 Filtration:  Ehiem  classic  2213  canister

Fertilization:  Macro  nutrients  of  20  gms  azoo  plant  magic  used  daily  in  night  half  an  hour  before  switching  off  light.Micro  nutrients  of  azoo  plant  gibberllin,  azoo  plant  zeatin,  azoo  plant  auxins  and  azoo  plant  solid  iron.  I  use  them  5  ml  each  every  15  days.

 Hardscape:
 Locally  collected  rock,purchased  driftwood

 Plants:
cacomba,  broad  leafed  grass,  small  amazon, sea  grass,  java  fern,  grass,  java  moss  tied  with  nylon  wire  on  wood.

 Fish:
one  albino  red  tailed  shark,  one  kori,  few  guppies,  4  yamata  shrimps,  algae  eaters, whip  tail  (  cant  recall  name  but  not  common  sucker, whatever  they  are  they  are  eating  algae  well  ),  one  pair  of  ramarezi,  Lost  12  nos  each  of  rasaboras,  rummy  nose  tetras,  cardinal  tetras,  3  clown  loaches.

Idea  is  to  create  a  valley  like  scape,  the  base  of  wood  and  rocks  in  front  would  be  completely  covered  with  sea  grass  .  Moss  will  grow  on  drift  wood.

 Issues  being  faced:

 1.  Initially  heavy  red  algae  and  brown  algae  heavy  outbreak.  Probably  due  to  the  reason  that  I  used  large  amount  of  macro  and  micro  nutrients  and  there  were  noth  many  plants  that  time.  Controlled  by  cutting  lighting  to  8  hours  ,  stopped  nutrients  till  algae  died  out,  twice  water  change  a  week.  Still  very  small  amount  of  reddish  brown  algae  reoccuring  on  plants.  I  rub  it  off  with  hands  during  weekly  water  change.  Snipped  off  cacomba  due  to  algae...now  the  regrowth  of  cacomba  is  very  slow.  Earlier  it  used  to  grow  like  weed.  Cant  understand  why  growth  stopped.

 2.  Reddish  brown  algae  almost  completely  covered  java  moss  initially  .  Now  algae  is  controlled  but  growth  of  moss  is  very  slow  now.  Pls  suggest

 3.  Ick  wiped  out  entire  population  of  rasaboras,  rummy  nose  tetras,  cardinal  tetras,  3  clown  loaches  during  last  two  weeks.  Surviving  fishes  dont  seem  to  have  ick  now.  Used  magic  treatment  of  azoo  but  didnt  helped.  Now  afraid  to  add  more  fishes.  How  long  should  i  wait  for  before  adding  same  kind  of  fishes.  Also  want  to  add  10  cherry  shrimps.

 4.  I  want  to  create  ripples  on  water  surface  so  that  light  rays  create  dazzling  and  rippling  of  light  effect  inside  the  tank  which  i  believe  will  give  a  nice  look  inside  the  tank.  Pls  suggest  how  can  i  do  that

 5.  Want  to  create  a  nice  lawn  in  left  front  side  of  tank.  Pls  suggest  some  lawn  plants.

I  would  really  appreciate  suggestions  to  better  the  looks  of  plant.

 Wishes

 Sanjay

the  rule  of  thumb  for  a  planted  tank  is  that  you  should  start  with  the  heavy  planted  tank  so  that  the  excess  minerals  that  are  leaching  out  of  the  substrate  can  be  used  up  by  the  plants  rather  than  by  algae.  you  should  have  allowed  the  plants  to  settle  down  for  abt  a  week  before  adding  any  nutrients, the  lightening   hours  should  be  gradually  increased  within  this  time.

this  size  of  tank  would  be  difficult  to  be  maintained  using  DIY  CO2  and  multiple  Diy  systems  should  be  required.  in  long  run  it  would  prove  to  be  very  expensive  so  i'll  suggest  u  to  go  for  a  pressurized  cylinder.

one  probable  reason  for  slow  growth  for  plants  and  mosses  may  be  high  temperature,  try  to  maintain  it  at  around  25  degrees

what  type  of  lightening  you  are  using?  if  its  fluorescent  light  then  you  won't  be  able  to  have  an  effective   rippling.

as  for  itch  the  life  cycle  of  parasite  is  abt  10-15  days  and  increasing  the  temperature  will  shorten  the  life  cycle  meanwhile  continue  the  medication(  you  can  use  tetracycline)  and  do  regular  water  changes  so  that  all  the  parasites  are  washed  out   or  killed.

Thanx  for  guidance  Sushant  and   Jerin.  Inded  it  was  helpful.  Did  the  mistake  and  learnt  the  lesson  regarding  algae.  Can  u  pls  suggest  on  how  to  lower  the  temp  of  water  as  there   is  no  place  to  install  a  fan  on  cover  on  aquarium.  Also  on  what  could  be  the  reasons  for  itch  happening  in  the  first  place.
Sorry  cant  post  the  pics  here  as  pic  size  is  limited  here..800  X  600  pixels....

Also  I  am  using  two  bottles  for  CO2  generator  which  lasts  for   18-20  days  and  consumes  about  4  cups  of  sugar...guess  pretty  economical.  Produces  one  bubble  every  2-3  seconds..plants  are  doing  good..and  amazon  and  giant  grass  has  already  started  producing  runners...

To  reduce  the  temperature,  you  can  use  the  cooling  fan.  You  get  aquarium  cooling  fan  that  can  be  clamped  to  the  aquarium  glass.

 Cooling  Fan

Now  to  upload  the  photos's  check  my  thread  in  which  my  friends  help  me  out  on  how  to  do:

First  upload  the  photos  to  any  media  sharing  website  (picasa,  flicker  etc),  then  link  the  photos  in  the  thread.

planted  Glossostigma  elatinoides  .  CO2  is  DIY  and  2  bubbles  per  second.  Lighting  is  128  watt  for  56  gallons  .  Brand  of  lights  is  azoo..18wX  2,  36wX  2,20wX  1.  Keeping  lights  on  for  8  hours  daily.   Glosso  are  growing  vertically  ..guess  need  to  increase  wattage  to  about  200  watt..  pls  suggest  if  CFL  lights  of  phillips  make  (  domestic  purpose  CFL's)  would  serve  the  purpose.  Water  temp  is  from  27  to  28.5  centigrade.  Its  this  high  because  of  lights  being  bit  close  to  water  and  no  air  circulation  insite  the  cover.  Pls  suggest  the  correct  wattage  for  glosso  and  correctness  of  usage  of  cfl...

I  was  happy  with  my  glosso  growth  initially,  but  the  algae  outbreak  later  was  too  much  for  me  to  handle. Its  main  cause  was  inconsistent  levels  of  Co2  which  was  being  pumped  in  from  the  diy  sugar  and  yeast  solution.
I  dont  exactly  know  what  wpg  glosso  needs  to  form  a  carpet. Some  say  it  has  to  be  more  than  2.5.
 I  had  1  36  WPLL  and  2  CFL's  each  of  11W  in  my  15*12*12  tank.
You  can  switch  to  PLL's  too. They  generate  less  heat  than  CFL's.
 Best  of  luck   Smile

@apcmge:  bro  for  good  growth  of  carpet  plants  a  lighting  of  3-4  WPG  is  essential  along  with  all  the  nutrients  and  consistent  co2  at  around  4BPS.
