when i was on pocket money and low on cash i used to use 3 biological sponge on single air pump as the only filtration in my 4 feet flower horn tank. flower horn was big but never created any problem. my water was always crystal clear. i cleaned my sponge every 4 days alternately.
my view low cost and effective biological filtration solution. |

True! But as per laws of nature everything is interrelated.
When you will use a single airpump to drive two filters, the volume turnover/filter will be less.
But yes, it would not matter if both the filter would be in the same tank! |

Giving advice without knowing the size of tank and the bioload in the tank is like shooting in dark.
Please give above details for more meaningful advice. |

Depends on the no.of fishes you have in the tank mate..
People suggested me to have a internal / jet filter which costs the same amount of pump + sponge.
And if you have less amount of fishes you can go ahead with 2 sponge filters. But if it is waste producers like gold fishes then sponge filter a great no..
I bought the internal filter for just X2 of the cost of pump + sponge. All these were BOYU branded.
So, obviously cost of pump + sponge + sponge is almost equal to the cost of Internal filter.
e.g. 1 + 4.5 + 4.5 is almost equal to 2.
And the disadvantage of internal / jet filter is, some fishes which doesnot like water flow wil be stressed with the amount of water flow with this filter.
So, decide yourselves |

Filteration depends on fish in the tank and number of them.
For me air pump sponge filter is better for fishes which cannot tolerate the flow of a power filter like fry tank, betta tank etc
its not a very good mechanical filter for example it is useless in oscar or gold fish tank, its good biomedia but washing drains out the colony of bactaria and washing is unavoidable.
LFS use this for reducing thier cost of power. but note they do daily water change can and siphon dirt on the bottom can you afford to do that? unless its discus
Filteration is complex subject so one ha fishs to be carefull and read more about it |
