Hi  guys,  I  have  a  dilemma.  I  want  snails  in  my  tanks  to  eat  dead  leaves,  left  overs  and  algae  (if  there  is  any.)
I  did  some  research  and  these  were  my  findings:

Apple/  mystery  snail:  Will  eat  my  plants  not  just  the  icky  stuff
Pond  snails:  Numbers  grow  like  crazy,  may  or  may  not  eat  plants..
Ramshorn:  Some  varieties  eat  plants,  small  ones  don't.  Good  algae  eater  (Will  it  eat  dead  fry/  leftovers?)
Trumpet  snails:  So  far  I'm  liking  them  don't  eat  live  plants,  will  turn  over  sand  and  eat  left  overs

I  was  thinking  about  getting  ramshorn  or  trumpets  (leaning  more  towards  trumpet)  Where  can  I  get  them?  I  tried  Crawford  and  they  didn't  even  have  apple  snails...  -__-  Can  you  guys  tell  me  your  experiences  keeping  these  snails  and  where  I  can  find  them?  Thanks!  Smile

 For  what  I  know,

Add  trumpet  snail  they'll  also  multiply  rapidly!!

add  clea  helena  (assasin  snail),  this  will  control  the  trumpet  snail  and  is  a  good  scavenger  as  well.

Go  for  Nerite  snails.  Will  control  algae,  wont  disturb  plants  and  wont  multiply.  Look  good  as  well.

Nerrites  are  costlier  than  the  rest  and  they  will  cover  your  decor  with  white  eggs,  though  they  dont  hatch. They  are  also  the  best  algae  eaters. They  look  stunning!

Ramshorn  multiply  like  hell,  but  are  great  algae  eaters. They  look  a  bit  Ok.

Pond  snails  are  average  eaters,  but  multiply  twice  as  fast  as  any  other  snail.

Trumpet  snails  are  average  eaters,  but  dont  multiply  as  fast.  They  also  keep  shifting  your  substrate,  reducing  the  amount  of  debris  visible  on  the  substrate.

Apple  snails  eat  everything  and  convert  everything  they  eat  into  babies  very  efficiently. They  grow  ginormic  and  there  are  very  few  plants  that  can  withstand  their  jaws.
There  is  also  some  "bridgesi"  apple  snails,  which  wont  eat  plants.

Trumpet  snails  are  supposed  to  multiply  rapidly  and  are  also  known  to  carry  parasites  that  affect  fish  as  well  as  humans.

I  am  also  wondering  wether  to  introduce  them  or  not  to  my  tank.

U  need  to  research  more  as  the  opinion  is  divided  regarding  trumet  snails.  Thye  are  also  difficult  to  catch  since  they  hide  in  the  substrate  dung  day  .

I  have  a  pair  of  apple  snails(may  be  bridgesi)  which  only  clean  algae  and  dont  touch  the  plants  so  you  may  go  for  them.

I  find  apple  snails  poop  a  lot!  I  had  them  before  but  I  gave  them  away,  they  also  got  huge..  So  I'm  steering  clear  of  them.
Trumpet  snails  carry  parasites  but  the  parasite  can't  jump  from  snail  to  human  without  a  middle  stage  in  its  life  cycle  which  I  think  is  a  bird  (that  has  to  eat  the  snail  first)..  So  you're  safe  that  way.

I'm  more  concerned  with  leftover  food  and  dead  fry  than  with  algae  to  tell  you  the  truth..  I'm  spawning  my  bettas  in  a  bare  bottom  heavily  planted  tank  so  I  can't  have  any  plant  eaters..  And  I  want  to  drop  a  few  trumpets  in  my  sand  substarte  tank  to  move  it  around  so  not  gas  pockets  are  formed...
So  based  on  that  any  ideas?  Sad
And  can  someone  in  Bombay  give  me  names  of  some  lfs  that  may  have  them?  Most  just  have  apples..

Lol!  I  wish  I  could  do  that!
I'll  try  it  out:  "  Snails  come  to  me!!  I  got  yummy  lettuce  for  you!"
They're  slow,  I  think  they  should  get  here  by  tomorrow!   ROFL
I'll  give  Kurla  a  shot  though..  Maybe  Pisces  in  Crawford,  they  had  their  shutter  half  down  the  day  I  went...

Tomorrow????  Dear  Nishaji...you  will  more  then  lucky  if  they  are  able  to  tie  their  shoe  laces  by  tomorrow  :)

In  Crawford  ,  I  dont  recall  the  name  of  shop  but  as  you  come  from  fruit  market  ,  from  right  hand  side  ,  enter  the  lane  .  On  your  right  hand  side  their  would  be  a  shop  selling  ducks  and  other  birds.  Just  opposite  to  that  there  is  a  LFS.  Its  doors  are  usually  shut  and  is  bit  bigger  then  other  LFS.  They  sell  good  fishes  but  at  higher  prices.  You  can  try  snails  at  that  shop.

That's  the  same  shop  I  was  talking  about  btw,  its  called  Pisces  Aquascape,  I  believe..  Their  shutters  were  down  the  last  time  I  went..  Maybe  lunch  time?  I  don't  know..  Wish  me  luck  Very Happy

Wished  you  luck  Smile..perhaps  you  went  during  ramzan  festivals  and  owners  and  workers  must  have  gone  for  namaz.  Also  on  fridays  avoid  visiting  the  shop  during  noon  hours  as  they  go  for  namaz  .
