I had bought 8 two inch red discuss, now after introducing them to my tank one of them is swimming erratically also its gill movements are fast, one more slightly small one is also not swimming properly it has lost its balance slightly ad its stomach is redish. I have seperated them in a small tank and started the teramycyin treatment along with epsom salt, I just wanted to know how to save the life of these two and also prevent any possible infection to others. Please help, Also raised the temp to 30 celsius. |

Two questions Mohan.
1.Any specific reason for jumpstarting antibiotic treatment?
2.Have you checked the chlorine content of your tap water? |

Please tell the tank specifications like size, decorations if any etc.
Also did you checked the PH variation in the tank and the water you bought the fish from?
did you used the Old water or new water to your tank?
Can you please upload a picture so that the experts can advice. |

Try to post the pic of these discus to guide you , also from where you source these discus
If they are from breeder , try to contact the breeder , he may advice you better . If they are from LFS , they may be carrying some infectiions . Did you quarantine these discus . |

Hi Mohan,
How are your discus juveniles doing now. I had similar problems last month. Tried Temp 30 & Rock Salt ... but could not save the affected fishes. In a matter of 2 days one lost the battle and the other in a weeks time. But the rest are doing fine till date. But sometimes, one of them do show those erratic movements.
Regards,
Suman |

I had the similar problem 2 months before.
I identified that the reson because of a water change after a rainy day.
May be Ph difference of impurities in the water or any other parasites caused the problem. I also used the rock salt treatment. but it will not reduce the problem.
I used the PP treatement and i just added the PP to the bare bottom tank after the water changes .
Surprisingly it worked out well for me. I cant ask any IAH dicus gurus because of the internet problem. But confirmed the PP dosage after the internet problem resolved.
(I DONT KNOW WHETHER THE PP HELPED ME OUT).
NB: It is not an advisable method to follow. So always go with the symptoms and ask any experts like Shiva or any others. I think Shiva is posted his number .So you can contact him. |

Hello Ratheesh,
I was actually guessing the same reason - WC. Most of those horror movements increased after WC.
Could you please let us know:
1. dosage of PP
2. amount of water in the BB tank
3. duration of the bath
4. No. and size of the discus you treated.
I have one juvenile with this dreaded disease. Its condition is not improving even by one percent, so atleast I can take a chance with your treatment ... else I know the end is going to be fatal.
Regards,
Suman |

Guys
By the looks of those poor fishes, the only thing that seems to be wrong with them is the chlorine content.I would request Mohan to specify his water aging process which I think is a suspect.
Ratheesh, chlorine is precisely the reason for your discus getting affected during the rainy season when the municipality fellows indiscriminately add bleaching powder to our water supplies to keep themselves on the safer side.
Mohan, do try to add some hypo(sodium thiosulphate) to the water during WCs for the next few days and check the difference.
This is something I have experienced in my beginner days(well,I am still very much a beginner ) and I would love to see my friends here not committing the same mistakes! |

@aquarius
i think the mejority of fish will die in chlorine water with in a day or an hour.In the case of mohan4060
there is no fish died(i think so) with in an hour or a day.
I my case there is no chlorine at all in my water becasue i am using my well water. So i suspect the major problem with me was impurities during the rainy season. My well water have some colour change during the rainy season.
I feel the same problem in two rainy seasons .Thant is the only one reason i go with the PP treatment.
Can you please let me know the hypo is act as a parasite killer? i dont know about that.I hope Hypo is just a water conditioner. So It will be great if you give me some light on this. |

@SumanG
Sorry. I missed your previous question.
The below is the dosage i used .The advise i got from Shiva Sir.
PP dosage 200 mg for 100 ltrs of water for 24 hrs , Ph should not be more then 7.5 . it works best at 7 .
Pl ensure there is no formalin or any Formalin based medicine in the water .
No heater , and heavy aeration is required .
I had treated them for 3 times just like
Day one ------ day day 4----day 7.
I do a massive water change after treating them. Also it is better to avoid Feeding during the PP .Thats why i had done the treatment in 1 , 4 , 7 days .
My tank is 3.5 x1.5x1.5 and had 10 discus was there in that time. |

Hypo (Sodium Thiosulfate) dechlorinates tapwater, widely used in discus hatcheries for multiple WCs. |
