I  just  had  a  molly  give  birth  and  am  wondering  if  they  will  be  sucked  in  by  HOB  filter  or  if  they  are  capable  of  avoiding  it?

You  need  to  give  the  tank  dimensions  and  the  filter  details.

I  think  for  now  you  could  tie  a  net  at  the  intake  of  the  filter.

i  would  say  that  HOB  is  not  a  gud  option  in  a  fry  tank.....  get  a  sponge  filter  for  d  fries............  the  outlet  force  of  the  HOB  is  very  harmful  for  d  fries....  Rock On

if  u  put  in  a  large  filter  for  a  small  tank  it  will  obviously  suck  in,  or  else  you  should  be  good  to  go
but  sponge  filters  are  best  for  fry  tanks

Here  is  a  pic  of  fry  tank  I  am  floating  long  hair  grass  (E.  vivpara)  to  provide  an  escape  for  the  fry.

I  have  left  to  mothers  in  the  tank  as  i  am  not  sure  if  they  have  given  birth  to  all  the  fry.

I  have  a  doubt  of  the  periodicity  with  which  they  release  the  fry  and  feeding  of  fry.

200  ltr  filtration  for  a  40  ltr  tank  is  an  overkill,  would  suggest  u  put  in  a  sponge  filter  or  DIY  one,  below  is  a  link

 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_spongefilter.php

mollies  drop  fry  for  a  max  of  2hrs,  if  u  dont  find  any  more  fry  being  dropped  then  you  can  remove  the  mother,  another  way  to  tell  that  she  is  done  with  giving  birth  is  that  she  will  start  chasing  and  eating  the  offspring,  she  does  this  only  after  she  is  done  giving  birth  to  all  the  fry,  the  fry  are  large  enough  and  can  immediately  take  crushed  fish  food  or  baby  brine  shrimp(even  better)
 Happy  Fish  Breeding
