I am thinking about a timer switch...
There are mechanical timer switches and electronic timer switches.
I assume that the electronic timer switches need uninterrupted power supply to make it work properly.
Will a electronic timer switch work fine where we don't have uninterrupted power supply?
Anybody using mechanical timer switches?
Where I have to search for a mechanical timer switch (again SP Road??)
Which one is more costly? Electronic or Mechanical? |

Hi Sujo,
I purchased a frontier electronic timer switch 3 months ago... ideally they should work even with interuppted power supply... mine did for about 2 months and then suddenly it started behaving weirdly. it would reset if the power went off when the lights were on. this happens now sporadically. so you can't rely on them completely. This my opinion and experience. |

Thanks for the reply.
Mechanical timer switches may be a better option for us as we have lot of power cuts.
It may be more stble than electronic timer switches.
I wish to hear comments from other people who are using timer switch.
hnabi,
How much you paid for your frontier switch and from where did you buy it? |

Go for a Mechanical Timer if you need long term reliability. I had a similar experience with Frontec timer, and since then have replaced it with Theben Mechanical timers. Have a couple of them running fine for about 1.5 -2 years now. Both Mechanical and Electronic timers come with an inbuilt battery to help the clock going in case of power cuts. BVK Iyengar Road is your best bet for timer in Bangalore.
Also go for a contactor if your load is high.

I checked for Mechanical Timer switches in SP Road.
It was not available in any of the shops in SP Road and they too referred BVK Iyengar Road for mechanical timer switches.
But I bought a frontier electronic timer switch from SP Road.
The electronic timer switch is working great and I am very happy about the features in the switch.
We can set 8 ON times and 8 OFF times and it is very easy to use.
As Prabhu said, it has an inbuilt battery. |

Mechanical timers are more costly than the digital timers. And mechanical timers are mostly used in industrial purpose and will have only one timing function. Where-else electronic timers would have multiple timing functions.
For example frontier timer have 64 timing functions in it. You can even set the timers to function on specific days too. Which would be useful for dosing pumps (But not everyone use automatic dosing).
@ Sujo, For mechnical timers, you will have to walk into chickpet or BVK road. To my experience mechanical timers are costly than electronic timers. May be you can check out and provide us a review on it.. |

For busy guys, reliability demands extra cost
We cannot keep running to BVK Iyengar road every time a electronic timer stops working.
My vote is for Mechanical timers, no fancy stuff........ |

If you buy genuine Frontier timers they will last for ever.
There are lot of fake Frontier timers in the market.
In Mumbai you can buy genuine Frontier timers at Lohar Chawl only from reputed dealers.
Fake Frontier timers available at a very cheap cost compared to genuine ones even available in the same market in Mumbai.
I'm using Frontier timers for more than two years without any issue.

@ hnabhi,
You will have to just replace the cell to resolve the issue.
Saikumar have given you the information regarding this. Just get the CR2032 Battery and replace it. This should make your timer work. The battery should cost you only the least two digit number (XX).
Expensive timers - There are lot of them available. Got to chickpet and you can get many brands of electronic/mechnical timers. Can check for Gelco brand timer. Their one model have an additional functionality wherein when the power goes off during the timer period, it would automatically add on the power off period to the timer period. So you will have exact 8hrs set period for the light. |

Wouldn't that offset the next day's timing by an equivalent amount !? Or does it do an reset of the offset for every 24 hrs ?!
