I  recently  got  this  two  4  inch  discus  and  currently  are  in  my  QT  24  x12x12,  temp  31c
 Iam  doing  daily  water  change
The  day  when  I  got  this  guys  I  found  some  cottony  mucus  secreting  from  gills  of  both.
gills  of  all  the  fishes  in  the  owners  tanks  were  flapping  more  than  normal  including  of  those  with  me  now  but  I  thought  it  would  be  due  to  overcrowded  tank  and  spike  in  ammonia.  I  have  a  bit   experience  in  picking  up  discus  from  such  conditions  earlier  at  LFS  and  they  improved  after  pampering  them  with  good  WC  but  this  mucus  thing  is  new  for  me
rest  everything  is  normal  they  are  eating  well  showing  good   bright  colors  with  good  shape
reading  on  internet  gave  me  results  of  prolong  exposure  of  fish  to  ammonia
Iam  doing  daily  twice  WC  75%  they  are  with  me  from  26th  December
I  would  like  to  know  the  treatment  of  such  disease,  I  want  to  cure  them  they  look  very  beautiful

Can  you  please  post  some  clear  pictures?  Cant  identify  anything  from  these  pictures.  It  "MAY  BE"  Gill  flukes  ,
But  cant  confirm  because  of  these  blured  pictures.
Do  maximum  water  change  and  do  post  some  clear  pictures.
If  it  persist  in  only  one  discus,it  is  better  to  remove  the  infected  one  from  that  batch.

Gill  problems  or  disease  is  actually  a  result  of  poor  water  management  .

 Early  Signs  of  Gill  Problems.
1)Fish  respiring  heavily  .you  can  see  the  opening  and  closeing  of  operculam  and  you  can  compare  this  with  other  fishes  .
2)Discus  not  eating  and  laying  at  the  bottom  or  near  the  surface  for  longer  time  .
3)You  may  obseve  some  time  the  operculam  is  closed  due  to  swelling  of  gills.
4)You  may  find  mucus  trailing  from  the  gills  .

 Causes  of  Gills  problem
1)Low  levels  of   dissolved  oxygen  in  water  .
2)Overcrowding  in  tank  (  many  fishes  in  small  volume  of  water  )
3)High  levels  of  bio  load  .
4)Water  with  high  Ph  ,  Ammonia  and  nitrite.
 5)High  levels  of  parasites  .

   Treatments
1)Check  the  Ammonia  ,  nitrite  and  Ph  of  water  .
2)Do  several   water  change  .  say  75%  WC  twice  per  day  .try  to  provide  them  cleaner  water  .
3)Provide  good  aeration  in  tank  .
 4)Clean  the  tank  regularly  .
5)If  you  suspect  parasites  start   with  Salt  bath  .
6)If  Salt  treatment  fails   ,  you  may  try  PP  or  Formalin  ,  but  if  the  gills  are  in  more  damaged  stage  then  PP  or  formalin  treatment  will  be   more  stressful  to  the  discus  .  During  PP  treatment  its  forms  precipitate  of  manganese  dioxide  on  gills  ,  which  pushes  the  discus  over  the  top  causing  respiratory  problem.

 Thanks

Move  tank  to  such  area  which  will  get  atleast  ambient  light.  Else  you  can  keep  tank  lights  on  24/7.  Discus  will  tend  to  be  skittish  if  kept  in  dark  area  all  the  time.

Actually  while   selecting  discus  ,  you  need  to  be  very  careful  ,  you  have  to  check  if  operculam  are  complete  and  there  is  no  gap  in  gills  .  Once  gills  are  damaged  it  is  very  difficult  to  improve  .Provide  them  good  water  condition  and  see  if  there  is  any  improvement  .

 thanks
