Marc,
I too think there are two different fishes, based on the shape. But they all school together and all have a blotch on the Caudal peduncle.
Madhu,
The boys, when we caught the fishes they thought it was Rasbora daniconiusbecause of the dark band near the lateral line. It's faded now because of the stress.

Yes Nayak, there are two fishes, the one with 2 pairs of barbels is Neolissochilus (Barbodes) wynaadensis, if you are quite sure of the caudal peduncle blotch. If not for the blotch, I would call it Barbodes carnaticus as I can count close to 30 LL scales. B. carnaticus juv' also have the dark lateral band.

To continue.....
We started off from Shivanasamudra to Talakad at 10.15am.
On the way just 2.0 Kms before Talakad we came across a irrigation canal. The canal was on both sides of the road. Getting down to check, we saw huge quantities of Tilapia in the right hand canal.
In the left hand canal we came across this sight.
Fishermen cleaning their catch and dumping the guts into the canal.
The huge Tilapia's.
Gorging on the Guts and other gory objects, there was a large shoal of P. conchoniusand other smaller Tilapia's. Trying to catch them.
Dinesh in a pensive mood.
Preethams face says it all.
The catch.
A crab.
Lepidocephalus thermalis
And no, that's not snow on the ground. Chicken feathers. Killing grounds! And the entrails went to the fishes.
Most probably this rich source of food was responsible for the high density of fishes at this spot. The water current in the canal was very fast, and this prevented us from bagging more fishes.

I do not know how many of you believe, But the above curse holds good till today. Always loved History!
And the Cauvery at Talakadu,
The birds, waiting for a fishy snack.
The Coracles. Ahhh, my sanity restored after seeing these normal leather Coracles. Just imagine, Last time I saw welded steel Coracles!
Father and Son duo! Dinesh guiding Ullas in fish catching. Check the Coracles with tourists in the background.

Muthathi!
Reached Muthathi at 3.15pm. Kids and Ravi(Ravabi) had a nice nap on the way. what with a full belly, warm breeze blowing and the soothing FM 92.7!
Here is the Cauvery again...
Collected a lot of rocks here. Had to make two trips to the Car with the help of Ravi. Our star catcher Preetham(Preeths) true to his luck caught a whole shoal of Puntius mahecola(?) and Barbodes wayanadensis(?) here. Around 12nos in all. Also around 10-12nos of Oryzias dancena. No pictures of O.dancena as of now. Clicking them on my point and shoot is going to be quiet tricky
Meanwhile Nidhi and Giri were busy catching this. Osteochilichthys Sp?
We saw a lot of fish hurt or sick. Many of them had Fungus, ICK or parasites on them. So much for healthiness of the wild fishes. The above Osteochilichthys is an example. When Nidhi and Giri caught it, it already had lost scales and its Caudal fin and was swimming erratically. We let it back into the river, of course.
