Yes they are rare. I hardly see them in Lfs. May be because people find crowns and halfmoons more attractive.
I may be wrong but I guess they were first developed in India.

They indeed are rare and I have hardly seen them in my visits to any of LFS. For the benefit of the fellow IAH members who may be interested in getting them, could you please let all know where you saw them?
Couple of days back, I saw a sick looking double tail betta in my local LFS. The way he was looking at me it seemed, he was begging me to take him home and so did I, very well knowing that he is sick. On top of it, he was in a tank full of serpaes who were nipping at his fin. I just couldn't leave him in that condition
Currently, I have quarantined him in a separate bowl and have added some rock salt to it. Just hope he recovers.
