I  am  thinking  of  moving  from  T5  tubes  to  metal  halide  bulb  for  my  2  ft  tank.
 experts  please  throw  your  suggestions.

Is  it  advisable  to  use  metal  halide  light  for  planted  tank?  will  it  be  more  efficient  than  t5  bulbs?  advantages/disadvantages...

Metal  halide  for  a  2'  tank  would  be  really  a  kill!!!

Its  good  to  have.  But  you  will  have  to  consider  the  heat  generated  by  the  metal  halide.  If  you  have  any  cooling  fan,  then  it  is  at-least  okay  to  have  the  metal  halide  in  the  tank.

What  is  the  wattage  of  metal  halide  light  are  you  planning  to  have  for  the  tank?

Note:  Posting  images  from  Internet  might  be  against  rule  of  IAH.  You  can  have  the  link  I  think  bit  not  the  image  directly  in  the  post.

 Disadvantages:-

Metal  halides  produces  more  heat  than  t5s  ,so  u  would  need  a  chiller  for  your  tank.
 It  would  cause  algae  too.

 Advantages:-

Nice  lighting  and  would  looks  fancy.

So  i  would  suggest  u  to  stick  with  T5s

 Shelly,

I  am  planning  to  get  75W/150W  solarmax  MH  nano  which  ever  available  at  the  store.
I  saw  in  a  LFS  they  had  this  light  for  there  planted  tank.  I  did  not  check  whether  they  had  chiller  :(

And  regarding  the  image,  thanks  for  the  hint.  But  I  think  I  posted  the  link  only.

 Pavan,

Yes  the  fancy  look  only  attracked  me  to  think  of  installing  the  MH  light  Smile
I  read  over  the  internet  that  plants  will  grow  crazy  with  the  MH  light,  as  the  light  will  penetrate  till  the  bottom  of  the  tank.

I  still  use  the  same  light  from  my  previous  tank.  Here  is  the  light

Disadvantage  of  this  light  hook  as  I  feel  is,  when  view  from  tank  level,  i  could  get  the  light  towards  my  eye.  You  can  see  that  in  the  image  too.  light  reflection  is  coming  heavily.

 This  have  4  2ft  T5  lights

I  like  the  way  your  light  and  tank  looks...I  mean  aesthetically  pleasly  to  my  eye  atleast...

Metal  halide  in  my  opinion  will  be  an  overkill,  unless  you  have  the  time  to  monitor  and  maintain  the  parameters  regularly...

 @  Pavan,

150Watts  would  be  really  high  light  for  your  tank.  If  ever  you  plan  to  go,  then  choose  75Watts.  75Watts  of  metal  halide,  you  need  to  have  a  close  look  into  the  tank.  High  light,  CO2  and  dosing,  should  be  in  proportion  or  algae!!!!!

When  you  have  the  MH,  you  should  hang  the  light  from  the  top.  This  again  would  have  the  same  effect  of  your  existing  hood.  Or  the  hood  has  to  be  designed  in  such  a  way  that  the  light  does  not  spread  away  from  the  hood  and  to  be  focused  only  to  the  tank.

May  be  you  can  use  the  existing  hanging  fixture  and  hang  your  new  MH  hood  in  that  fixture.   Smile

Thanks  Shelly  for  your  positive  feedback!!!
I  think  the  new  MH  comes  with  the  hood  as  you  see  in  pictures  i  posted  on  MH.

Will  try  to  monitor  the  tank.  what  i  really  liked  on  the  MH  is,  it  actually  shows  the  water  movement/reflection  also.  the  light  penetration  is  that  good  as  a  real  mid  day  sun  light.

But  are  you  sure  that  you  would  get  these  kinds  of  MH  light  fixture  in  India?  I  have  never  seen  them  personally  in  any  LFS!!!!
