It was not as grand as it was advertised. But it was worth going looking at the beautiful fishes.
And I have taken a lot of photographs. In the process of uploading them. Will share them soon

Most of the livestock in the exhibition was for sale but the variety was extremely disappointing and the greedy, myopic LFS’s had as usual overpriced everything. It also became clear that not all of Mumbai’s well known LFS’s had taken part in this exhibition. In FW arowanas, goldfish , koi’s ruled the roost (nothing surprising there) but the marine collection was very decent, as were the planted setups. A local political bigwig may have been the chief guest/inaugurater but he was completely overshadowed by the Jagan Reddy of Indian Aquarists GatorSir. GatorSir decided he needed an assistant that day to carry his bag so I was lucky to get chosen among the few thousands that had applied.
Once we entered the hall, the LFS owners fell in file and perspired freely while Gator inspected each and every tank (and owner). He poked, prodded and nudged. He studied, examined and questioned and then finally gave the exhibition an overall thumbs down. Then we went outside and had a refreshing thums up (1 buck extra for chilled). The LFS owners heaved a mighty sign of relief and we heard loud clapping and cheering the moment we left the building.
The showstoppers for me were a pair of juvenile electric blue jack dempseys, all of one inch in size. They looked beaten up and were horrendously overpriced but were beautiful nonetheless. I also thought the jellyfish setup was quite a creative call and a welcome novelty for the lay public. I love how they advertised it - 'FOR THE FIRST TIME IN INDIA - A JELLYFISH TANK!!!', well at least they took the trouble housing the Jellies in a cylindrical tank.
It takes a lot of effort (permissions, bribes etc) to put together an event in Mumbai these days so I think it was a good effort. |

On Sunday evening I walked from Dadar stn searching for the exhibition venue. Found the venue and also saw the queue, kept walking to find the other end of the queue, and again walked and walked and walked till the end of the queue when I realised that I had reached Matunga stn. Caught a train to Kurla to release my urge to see some fishes.
On a serious note, I am not sure why people organise such events at location where the crowd has to wait for 2 hours to see some fishes. The same experience I had in Pune where I had to wait for 2.5 hours and to ralise that it was not worth the wait. Am sure there must be some other venue with a larger area. |

Well what else would you expect on a sunday, a public holiday and the last day of the exhibition? and you went to Kurla on a Sunday?? hope your urge was satisfied. There are serious issues and hindrances in organizing any sort of exhibitions in Mumbai and the fact that they managed to pull this off should be appreciated. Mumbai needs more such exhibitions which in turn can create more hobbyists. The large crowds are only a testimonial to the success of the exhibition even if it wasn't as good as the last one. |

The exhibition was ok overall .. Maybe I had too high expectations ... but primarily all i saw was not a lot different from when I go to visit the stores in borivali ... Well it was more like a visit to a huge LFS ...
However I thought the Golden arowana on display was a cracker of a fish ... sheesh one can only dream sometimes .. |

a. my point was not to insult anybody/group for its action/organising skills, and I am also aware of the sunday time.
b. "large crowds are only a testimonial to the success of the exhibition even if it wasn't as good as the last one"
Thats a different mindset. too many people does not mean too good exhibition. many may not come next time if the exhibition was bad. Besides, I find it very difficult to get along with that mindset of "too many people". Sounds more political. Better management is needed to handle the crowd so that they are not made to wait for so long. I did not have a very good time waiting with my 2 year old in the queue for 2.5 hours. I mean, how can I really appreciate that kind of crowd management unless I want people to know that so many people waited in the queue.
c. "you went to Kurla on a Sunday?? hope your urge was satisfied."
Yes, ofcourse, on Sunday evening, yes I did get satisfied. I work/stay in Pune and I travel to Mumbai not so often. I do get to see a lot of fishes that I don't get to see here. Kurla does have more options that Pune for sure. I am still cherishing the feeling of getting a couple of oscar fries from there. Just loving those cute little things. I am an amateur, please don't include me in the expert league.
Again, my post was not to offend anyone, I just shared my views ONLY on the crowd management and I am sure there must be a better way to handle and do better. |

Hey come on guys.
All said and done. I have posted the pics of the ones that were good. look at them. otherwise it was not that great.
Surely would want Mumbai to hold such exhibitions regularly.
Iam thinking of setting up an aquarium at Goregaon (ofcourse with the help of local politicians- cant do without them if you need land and finance.)
Have thought of native section, novelty section and marine section. it is in an idea stage. have identified the place. now to meet the politicians.
I would need help from my fellow IAHians to make it a success. No freebies. there will be an entry fee for sure. |
