Many  people  just  throw  out  their  air  pumps  when  they  stop  functioning.  LFS  guys  offer  no  help  in  repairing  air  pumps  and  recommend  buying  a  new  one.  What  you  need  to  understand  is  that  repairing  an  air  pump  is  no  rocket  science  and  most  of  the  time,  takes  only  5-10  minutes.  I  will  try  to  help  you  guys  in  this  regard.

All  the  air  pumps  that  I  have  ever  owned  work  on  a  simple  Mechanism.
It  consists  of  an  alternating  electromagnet  and  a  partitioned  air  chamber  with  non-returning  valves  on  both  air-entry-points.  Now  these  valves  are  simple  diaphragmatic  valves,  consisting  of  a  flexible  teardrop-shaped  diaphragm  made  of  decent  quality  rubber.

The  commonest  causes  of  air  pump  malfunction  and  their  repair  methods  are:
 1)  Torn  diaphragm.  This  leads  to  dysfunctional  valve.      SOLUTION:  All  you  need  to  do  is,  replace  the  diaphragm  using  either  genuine  spare  diaphragm  or  a  flexible,  thin  sheet  of  rubber  or  paper  or  plastic  cut  to  the  same  size.  (  I  usually  use  PVC  tape  doubled  up  and  stuck  on  itself.  Works  at  least  for  a  year.  )
 2)  Broken  pivot  /  attachment  of  the  electromagnet.      SOLUTION:  You  just  need  to  fix  the  electromagnet  back  in  place  using  fevi  quick  /  adhesive  tape  /  thread,  whichever  is  applicable  or  available.
 3)  Dust  trapped  in  the  valve  or  any  air-entry-point.      SOLUTION:  Simply  clean  it  off  using  a  soft  cloth  /  ear-bud  /  soft  bristled  paintbrush.
 4)  Electrical  fault  (  eg.  short  circuit  )  in  the  cable.      SOLUTION:  Replace  the  cable.
 5)  Electrical  fault  in  the  regulator  switch  of  the  pump.      SOLUTION:  Bypass  the  switch.
 6)  Electrical  fault  in  the  coil  of  the  electromagnet.      SOLUTION:  Replace  the  electromagnet  or  buy  a  new  pump,  whichever  is  economical.

These  are  the  only  problems  that  I  have  faced  so  far  in  the  last  10  years.  And  I've  repaired  the  pumps  myself,  with  no  significant  loss  of  aeration.  I  am  no  electrician,  but  as  they  say,  "Necessity  is  the  mother  of  invention.  DIY  maintenance  in  my  case."

Here  are  a  few  self  explanatory  labelled  snaps  as  visual  aid.
If  anyone  can  add  to  it,  it  will  be  highly  appreciated.

Rock On   Rock On  to  you  Sir!!

Your  instructions  are  really  easy  to  follow.

 I  have  just  one  question:

Can  any  of  this  this  be  extended  to  canister  filters?  I  have  a  Dolphin  internal  filter  with  the  wire  broken  at  exactly  the  point  where  it  comes  out  of  the  motor  housing  at  the  top.  I  have  been  using  the  filter  for  about  4  years.  It  has  never  given  me  any  cause  for  complaint  until  now.  I  don't  want  to  throw  away  a  perfectly  good  filter  just  because  the  wire  is  broken.  All  the  electrical  stores  that  I  have  taken  the  filter  to  tell  me  that  the  motor  compartment  is  sealed  and  that  it  cannot  be  opened  to  fix  the  wire.  Please  let  me  know  if  you  have  any  suggestions.

 Thanks,
 Vicky

 Vicky

Yes,  you  can  go  ahead  and  open  the  top  compartment  of  your  Internal  filter  after  drying  the  unit  completely.
Replace  the  wire  right  from  the  point  where  it  has  been  soldered.
Connect  the  new  wire  to  the  mains  to  ensure  that  the  filter  is  functional.
 -  If  no,  test  the  line  and  see  whether  there  is  any  fault  in  the  coil  and  get  it  corrected.
 -  If  yes,  seal  the  compartment  again  with  a  combination  of  feviquick  and  All-Fix  /  Silicon  /  m-seal  /  Gap  Fill  or  any  other  aquarium-safe  waterproof  sealant.

After  you  do  the  above  procedure,  let  the  filter  cure  for  2  days.  Then  run  the  filter  continuously,  submerged  in  a  bucket,  half  full  of  water  for  the  next  two  days.  Later  introduce  it  into  your  aquarium.

 All  the  best.  Thumb Up

If  you  succeed,  start  a  thread  of  the  same  here  with  a  few  pics  of  the  procedure  to  help  others.
