|
|
Hi Friends,
I was just thinking about placing some thermocol inside the planted tank.
It may be a blunder so I thought of taking your opinion about this.
I have created and image to share my idea and you can see it below.
These are the advantages I see due to this are...
1) We can save the costly substrate to a good extend.
2) We can create nice slope in the tank as we saved the substrate.
3) The weight of the tank can be reduced to 10 to 15 kgs.
4) We can place big rocks inside the tank without worrying about the glass being broken.
Now please let me know the disadvantages of this.
Anyone has tried this in your tank?
If not thermocol, is there any other better thing, which can be used like this.

i learnt thermocol dosent react with anything....(exept with o2 while burning)
so i dont think it will contaminate water.....
butttttt......
if even a small piece gets free into water.....
1.ingestion will cause choking
2.may block gills....
which may both cause death to fauna.... |

| Afaik! Thermocol is inert in nature so that should be fine but I'd suggest you replace the thermocol by sheets of glass to be extra safe. That way you can remove the stones from the set up and place them somewhere else in the tank which will give more of an aesthetic appeal. |

and also....
make sure to add a good amount of weight....
i mean 3 layers of thermocol will surely need a considerable amunt of weight to repel the buoyant force and stay submerged......
and i'm no expert in marine biology....just a science student..... |

| Why not stick the pieces together, and then stick the entire thing on the bottom glass. All with silicon. I haven't tried it, but it just came to my mind while going through this thread. |

| there is no issue at al to use thermocol inside a planted tank, its just fine. just ensure the substrate is enough to hold the rock. I have used themocol in my couple of tanks and they do good. |

Hi,
I have another suggestion. Instead of thermocol u can use light weight tiles. Flip the tiles and place them rough side top so the rocks don't move. |

I have used them in my nano tank. But it toppled after some days and I have to rescape the entire tank.
If you can place enough weight to hold the thermocol then no issues. |

| Thermocol floats in water. Its a difficult job to keep them submerged. |

Hi Vaidu,
I didn't try this.
Thermocol has a considerable upward thrust.
So by considering the risk of toppling, I thought not to do it.

Thermocole will not work, if you place heavy stones on it it will simply break off and the pieces not under it will come up.
Why don't you guys just use rock or stone slabs instead? There are many inert stones. |
