Light  has  to  be  chosen  based  on  the  plants  that  you  intend  to  grow,  co2  (pressurized/diy)  and  fertilizer  dosing.  So  choosing  light  is  a  bit  tricky  here.

First  let  us  know  if  you  are  planning  to  use  CO2  and  fertilizers.  Then  we  could  suggest  on  what  light  and  wattage  of  light  to  be  used.

Please  read  on  lighting  for  planted  tank  to  get  a  better  understanding  on  how  light  has  to  be  choosed  for  a  planted  tank.

 hey   shelly
initially  i  am  not  going  to   use  co2  as  am  still  new  to  planted  tank   and  going  to  keep  on  researching  about  it.  later  on  am  thinking  of  adding  DIY  co2  .  and  even  fertilizers  (fell  free  to  advice  me  on  this  two  topics  as  m  always  eager  to  learn  &  can  u  suggest  me  any  books  u  refer  to  gain  knowledge  )  secondly
i  was  thinking  of  using  cfl  lighting  can  u  advice  me  on  this  also  .

For  DIY  substrate  visit  this  thread.

Try  laterite  soil  for  bottom  layer  (1.5  -  2.5  inch)  and  a  combination  of  gravel  and  construction  sand  for  the  top  layer(1  -  1.5  inch)

I  am  using  laterite  soil  +  construction  sand.  Its  quite  good,  plants  growing  surely  but  slowly.  But  without  gravel  on  top,   substrate  leaking  has  been  common.  So  make  sure  you  add  a  gravel  layer.

 hey  people
i  became  interested  in  planted  aquarium  after  i  saw  a  the  fish  tank  of  a  local  NRI  at  whos  place  my  uncle  works  as  a  caretaker  ,  with  his  permission  my  uncle  gave  me  some  cuttings  from  his  tank  .my  uncle  is  also  not  a  experienced  aquarist   but  after  i  got  them  i  planted  them  in  a  bucket   with  DIY  substrate  and  they  were  in  natural  light  .  they  started  growing   fine  and   now  i  have  made  2  buckets  of  them  .now  thinking  back  of  the  beauty  of  the  NRI's   tank  i  thought  i  also  should  make  one  (maaaan  the  tank  is  really  beautiful  with   neon  and  blackfin  tetras  )  i'll  try  to  get  u  that  photo  .
i  think  the  plants  i  have  are  ludwigia  n  aquatica  cabomba  .there  are  two  more  species  but  i  cannot  figure  them  out
i  am  also  thinking  of  buying  more  plants  as  i  become  more  experienced   (can  u'll  suggest  me  any  species  that  i  should  buy  )
and  the  tank  dimension  of  my  tank  is  28''x12''x18''
i  am  thinking  of  putting  two  30  watt  cfl  will  that  be  ok

can  i  ask  u  some  thing
some  days  back  i  had  tried  DIY  substrate  of  laterite  soil  and  5mm  gravel  layer  for  my  planted  tank  .
and  during  the  some  time   the  filter  failed  for  2  -3  days  .
all  my  fish  that  is  neon  tetras  died  just  within  2  days  maaan  can  u  tell  me  the  reason.  and  that  time  i  dint  know  about  the  lighting  law  ,  that  is  (2-2.5watts  for  a  gallon  of  water  in  tank  )
so  some  of  my  plants  were  also  dying  .  now  after  fishes   were  dead  i  shifted  the  surviving  plants  in  buckets  in  natural  light  and  now  they  are  doing  fine   .  for  this  reason  i  dont  want  to  try  DIY  substrate  again  .
can  u  'll  explain  what  went  wrong  with  my  tank  during  that  phase

also  forgot  to  mention  that  some  times  when   i  used  to  plant  some  soil  use  to  escape  in  water,  was  this  also  harming  my  water  quality
 thanks  in  advance

Its  like  you  have  punctured  your  vehichle's  tyre  and  you  are  blaming  your  horn  for  it.

Well  no,  laterite  wouldnt  have  done  this  killing,  your  failed  filter  can  easily  do  so.  Or  else  why  do  you  think  people  would  suggest  you?  Smile
Yes,  you  ll  see  dust  clouds  when  you  move  a  plan  or  so,  but  it  ll  subside  soon  in  a  day  or  two.  Still  it  doesnt  mean  that  you  can  keep  plucking  your  plants  every  week.

In  case  you  would  want  to  start  nice,  nothing  better  than  going  through  the  journals  on  the  forum  Thumb Up

 marlon12,

Please  read  about  Walstad  Aquarium  before  blindly  going  out  for  DIY  aquariums.

Here  is  one  of  my  experience  with  low-tech  DIY  aquarium.
 http://aquariumtime.blogspot.in/2011/11/aquarium-setup-using-walstad-method.html

Also  please  describe  your  setup  for  growing  ludwigia  in  a  bucket.  I  also  want  to  grow  some  of  those  and  then  plant  them  in  my  aquarium.

 Regards,
 -  Vinay  Gaonkar.
