 Hi  All,

I  referred  to  one  of  the  Posts  made  by  a  fellow  IAH'ist  and  I  did  my  own  version  of  mixed  food  recipe  for  my  cichlids.
 I  had  a  mixed  success.
Here  are  the  ingredients  and  the  quantities  ,  that  I  mixed.

 Prawns  -  150  Gms
 Boneless  Chicken  -  250  gms
 Spinach  leaves  (  Palak  )  -  20  leaves
 Carrot  -  1  Medium  Sized.
Green  Peas  -  25  shelled  ones.
 Paprika/Guntur  Chilli  -  1/2  teaspoon.
 Turmeric  -  1  pinch
Fish  food  -  1/2  cup  (mixture  of  NLS  ,  Spirulina  ,  Hikari  and  Ocean  Free  Cichlid  pellets)
 Garlic  -  3  Cloves
 Multivitamin  Tablets  -  2  quantities
 Gelatin  -  Unflavoured(  6  Tablespoons  -  200  ML  water  )

Mixed  it  in  a  mixer  till  a  paste  kind  of  consistency  achieved  and  then  thoroughly  mixed  it  with  Gelatin  solution.
Kept  it  in  Freezer  for  4  -  5  hrs.

 Results  was  a  mixed  success.

My  new  EBJD's  6  no's  ,  Red  Texas  2  no's  gulped  them  slowly.  Old  3  EBJD's  stared  and  sulked.  What  a  joke  expression   ROFL
Peacock  Bass  -  would  have  slapped  me  for  my  audacity.  Punch
My  Green  terrors  ,  Mayan  Cichlids  ,  Yellow  Jacket  cichlids  loved  them...probably  due  to  hunger  as  I  had  skipped  their  meal  the  previous  day.

Will  keep  you  all  posted  if  the  good  rate  continues  and  if  I  have  any  conversions.

How  is  the  water  quality  after  giving  the  food?  show  us  a  tank  shot  while  feeding.  Becasue  chicken  will  release  fat  and  water  will  cloud  instantly.

What  is  Fish  Food/  why  did  you  require  to  add  fish  food?

Water  quality  will  be  fine...reason  ...Gelatin...Gelatin  is  a  binding  agent.  Let  me  know  if  you  still  wish  to  see  a  shot  of  my  tank.

I  picked  one  of  the  recipes  from  Internet,  which  also  suggested  Fish  food.
Apparently  if  Fish  food(  from  market)  prepared  properly(  read  -  authentic)  would  contain  nutrients  for  coloration  ,  which  I  was  exploring  for.
The  reason  I  DIY  the  food  was  to  ensure  quality  food  for  my  fishes.

Ya  I  want  to  see  the  tank  shot  while  feeding.  Do  me  a  small  favour,  fill  absolutely  new  water  in  the  tank  and  clean  the  glasses  properly,  then  drop  the  food.  Take  a  video  if  possible.

Does  the  food  sink  or  it  floats?

 Vinod,
I  don't  think  Paprika  &  Guntur  chilli  are  the  same  thing.  Paprika  is  Kashmiri  chilli  which  is  rather  bland  and  used  mainly  for  coloring  food.  Guntur  chilli  is  very  spicy!  Please  recheck.

Hey  Vinod  your  recipe  is  a  great  treat.  The  only  thing  that  bothers  me  is  the  chicken  meat  you  have  used.  Long  back  when  I  was  searching  for  a  recipe  I  came  across  few  website  which  says  not  to  use  any  chicken,  mutton  or  beef  meat  in  the  mixes  due  high  fat  content  in  the  animal  meat  (I  could  not  find  the  link  though).  You  can  add  more  of  prawns  or  fish  meat  to  enhance  the  taste.  Even  in  beef  heart  or  goat  heart  mix  it  is  recommended  to  remove  all  the  meat  and  fat  completely.  Also  you  can  skip  the  use  of  Gelatin  if  you  are  using  prawns  as  prawns  itself  acts  as  a  natural  binding  agent.

However  again  any  animal  meat  based  food  should  be  fed  only  2-3  times  a  week.

You  are  spot  on  Ruchit,  the  website  I  referred  too  dettered  from  using  Chicken.
I  was  experimenting  and  thus  added  chicken.
As  you  said,  the  website  too  suggested  Prawns  and  Fish  based  recipe.
I  have  only  pepared  a  little  ,  next  time  around  will  skip  the  chicken.  Thanks.   Thumb Up
I  doubt  it  if  I  can  skip  the  Gelatin..because  ..I  add  many  other  ingredients  ,  which  make  the  mixture  a  paste..and  when  added  to  water  ,  it  would  simply  disperse  and  cloud  the  water.
I  dont  overfeed  them  n  since  I  have  veggies  in  them...should  I  not  be  ok  ?

Good  to  see  that  you  are  trying  DIY  fish  food.

I  make  mine  too.  Mine  has  shrimp,  spinach,  garlic,  banana,  carrots,  sometimes  beef  heart  and  gelatin.  The  finished  product  looks  like  this.

Yes,  it  does  cloud  the  water  a  bit  after  feeding,  but  a  good  filter  will  set  it  right  in  an  hour  or  so.  Don't  bother  too  much  about  what  you  feed  your  fish,  you  have  no  idea  what  they  eat  in  the  wild.  I  remember  a  nice  thread  where  Nayak  posted  about  Tor  sp  feeding  on  rice.

Just  make  sure  you  keep  the  diet  varied  and  don't  let  them  get  hooked  on  to  one  type  of  food  so  that  they  will  get  the  nutrients  they  miss  out  on  one  food  from  the  other.

I  even  feed  my  fish  bits  of  chewed  beef  when  there  is  nothing  else  around  Wink  but  please  don't  follow  it  as  the  rule  of  the  thumb....just  keep  it  varied.

Technically  shrimp  and  prawn  are  different  --  check  this  Pic  but,  here  I  have  used  it  for  the  edible  crustacean  that  we  get  in  the  fish  market.

I  use  banana  for  the  creamy  texture  it  gives  the  mix.
