I  have  an  outdoor  tub  with  guppies  and  water  lily  in  it.  Noticed  some  black  flea  like  creatures  in  the  tub.  They  dont  seem  to  be  daphnia  as  the  fishes  have  a  fin  tear.  This  had  happened  earlier  and  I  had  a  big  time  changing  entire  water  many  times  to  remove  all  (or  that  I  thought)  I  have  another  outbreak  and  its  difficult  to  repeat  the  same  stuff.  More  difficult  to  transfer  all  guppies  as  I  also  have  a  good  population  of  fries  in  it.

Suggestions  needed!!  Any  idea  what  these  fleas  could  be?  How  can  I  remove  them?  They  are  underwater.  Not  on  leaves.  They  are  surely  responsible  for  fin  tear  as  the  same  had  happened  earlier.

The  fleas  are  around  1-2  mm  in  size  and  few  are  about  4mm.  They  are  bottom  dwellers.
I'll  try  to  get  a  pic.  Maybe  tomorrow.  I  did  squish  a  couple  of  them.  The  point  I  am  trying  to  make  is  -  they  can  be  squished.  But  it  will  take  me  a  whole  day  to  squish  all.  Most  of  them  are  very  very  small.  They  swim  round  and  round  but  they  do  stay  only  at  the  bottom.

They  look  like  dragon  fly  nymphs  to  me.

Empty  out  the  tank,  to  get  rid  of  them.  Keep  your  tank  covered  by  a  mesh  to  prevent  recurrence.
Good  you  removed  the  fish,  they  devour  the  fish  as  they  grow.

Thanks  Madan..  Can  you  tell  me  how  do  I  kill  them?  The  tub  is  almost  empty.  Water  is  out  that  ie.  Moist  soil  and  the  plant  still  in.  They  seem  to  survive  on  moist  soil  as  well.

Can  I  kill  them  by  adding  something  in  the  tub?  They  have  been  a  terrible  pest.  I'll  get  a  mesh  ASAP.  I  already  have  lost  many  fries  due  to  them.

 Madan,

I  just  did  a  google  on  dragonfly  nymph.  They  seem  to  be  around  1"  to  1-1/2"  in  size.  The  pests  in  the  tub  are  much  smaller  in  size.  Could  it  be  something  else?

Hi,  not  sure  what  these  guys  are  called  but  I  have  seen  them  mixed  in  when  I  buy  daphnia  from  the  LFS  sometimes.  Maybe  some  type  of  water  beetle  ?  They  are  about  the  size  of  a  matchstick  head  ?  Similar  to  ladybug  but  black

Dragonfly  nymphs,  when  small  will  look  like  this,  they  get  larger  as  they  grow.

I  am  not  absolutely  certain  they  are  dragon  fly  nymphs,  that's  my  guess.  Try  to  catch  one  of  them  and  check  if  they  have
a  hard  skin  like  ants/cockroaches,  called  "chitin",  if  they  do  then  conventional  methods  may  not  work,
you'll  have  to  discard  the  sand  and  mud  and  start  over  again.

or  you  can  temporarily  put  in  a  large  cichlid  that  can/will  eat  them.

These  do  not  appear  to  be  be  Dragon  fly  larvae,  their  movement  while  swiming  is  too  jerky,  too  strong.  They  look  like  a  crustacean,  since  those  have  a  powerful  stroke  and  so  have  these...

Skhindia,  Sid  has  made  an  excellent  suggestion.  Borrow  a  cichlid  or  even  a  gourami  from  a  hobbyist  friend  if  you  do  not  have,  add  more  water  to  the  tank,  and  put  the  fish  in!  it  wil  clean  the  menace  out  in  a  few  days,  so  well,  you  will  be  relieved  of  them.

Do  not  consider  drugs  in  such  situations,  they  can  mess  up  the  biological  equlibrium  in  a  water  body  in  the  long  term  that  is  a  lot  of  trouble  to  understand  and  overcome.

They  could  be  a  species  of  cyclops.  If  u  could  put  them  on  a  watch  glass,  or  take  one  out  and  let  it  dry  out  and  die,  then  put  it  in  water  again  and  then  photograph,  it  would  be  easier  to  ID.
