@garothmann:  Yes,  a  one  day  return  trip  is  exhausting  and  tiring.  I  hope  we  can  soon  plan  for  a  two  day  trip,  unfortunately  i  am  always  away  on  by  business  tours  and  miss  these  opportunities.

Good  to  hear  that  you  had  tons  of  fun,  what  did  you  collect?  please  provide  details,  pics  would  be  great!
And  what  do  you  mean  by  'lots  of  swearing'  ?  I  hope  it  was  all  a  part  of  excitement  and  in  a  good  sense!!  Thumb Up

Special  thanks  to  Anish  and  Emmanuel  for  getting  their  cars  or  we  really  dont  know  what  we  would  have  done.

Heres  a  teaser  BB  photo  on  the  weather  there.

And  a  photo  of  the  plants  we  collected.  The  bucket  is  almost  equal  3  double  the  size  big  buckets  full.

I've  kept  this  in  the  window  and  will  start  sorting  it  this  evening  to  see  how  many  types  are  there

Hobbyists,  my  number  is  listed  here.  Call  me  for  my  address.  Just  come  home  and  collect  as  much  as  you  want
 (Mon-Fri)  after  630/7pm  and  10am-5pm  (Sat-Sun)

Note  :  Please  carry  your  own  plastic  bags  to  collect  these  because  I  currently  have  absolutely  nothing  with  me

PostPosted: Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:12 am Post subject: Plants Sorted Out Reply with quote

OK.  Finally  sorted  the  plants  out.  Cheering   Phew  !!  FYI  -  These  were  found  at  Pimpalgaon  Joga  Dam.

Got  a  pair  of  rubber  gloves  from  the  chemist  and  began.  I  started  at  7pm  and  at  730  realised  I  needed  some  containers  for  these.  So  rushed  down  to  Magnet  and  got  4  buckets  and  finally  finished  at  10pm.

Orange  bucket  is  loaded  full  with  Najas  Indica
Green  bucket  has  lots  of  Hydrilla  Verticillata
Green  bucket  has  lots  of  Elodea  Canadensis  (Green)
Blue  bucket  has  mix  of  many  smaller  stems  of  both  Hydrilla  and  Elodea  and  1  sole  Sagittaria  with  runner  shoots  (see  pic  below)

 From  Left  to  Right
Elodea  Canadensis  (Green),   Hydrilla  Verticillata,  Sole  Saggitaria  with  runners,  Najas  Indica
(Would  any  expert  like  to  confirm  names  ?  )

Please  come  an  pick  as  much  as  you  want.  Quarantine  them  and  treat  it  with  potassium  permanganate  before  you  use  them.

In  order  to  keep  this  stock  in  good  condition  till  you  can  get  it  from  me  I  now  need  some  advice  from  the  experts  here

Ive  kept  all  these  buckets  in  my  grill  window.  The  water  I've  directly  added  from  the  tap  till  three-fourth  level  in  the  bucket  along  with  the  usual  water  conditioner.
Sun  usually  comes  here  at  this  grill  window  after  12pm  till  sunset.  There's  not  much  sun  now  though  because  of  the  rains.  I  cannot  keep  these  buckets  on  the  window  on  the  other  side  for  morning  sun  because  this  place  is  frequented  by  rats  at  night  and  I  can't  take  a  change  to  lift  this  everyday  because  I  don't  want  to  aggravate  my  back  pain.

 Questions
 1)  In  order  to  avoid  mosquitoes  breeding  when  can  I  add  2-3  small  fish  in  this.  What  would  be  the  best  and  cheap  hardy  fish  ?  Guppies  ?  Males  and  Females  ?  And  let  them  breed  with  nature  taking  its  course  ?
 2)  Should  I  feed  these  fish  or  will  there  be  natural  food  for  them  via  plants  and  sunlight  ?
 3)  Should  I  add  a  couple  of  Amanos  or  Red  Cherry  Shrimps  in  there  for  algae  treatments  ?  How  many  per  bucket  ?
 4)  Is  substrate  necessary  at  all  ?
 5)  Should  I  add  a  small  dose  of  CSM+B  (for  some  micro-nutrients)  in  each  bucket  ?
 6)  If  I  do  weekly  water  changes  Is  30%  or  50%  enough  ?

Do  come  in  large  numbers  and  pick  this  up  OR  I'll  be  spending  more  on  maintenance  of  this   Chuckle

 Thanks
 Pio

 Hi  Pio,

How  many  days  you  want  to  keep  these  plants  like  this.

I  am  growing  Najas  Indica  in  my  balcony  Bucket.
I  am  keeping  it  in  such  a  way  that  it  will  receive  some  amount  of  direct  sun  light  and  more  of  indirect  sun  light.
 There  is  no  substrate.
The  bucket  (tub)  is  full  of  water.
My  Najas  Indica  grows  a  lot.
I  think  your  other  plants  are  also  very  well  comparable  to  Najas  Indica.
So  you  can  also  try  similar  way.

 1)  Guppies  will  be  best  option.
 2)  You  don't  have  to  feed  them  as  3-4  guppies  can  easily  find  their  food  from  those  plants.
 3)  I  think  you  don't  need  to  bother  adding  Amanos  and  RCS.  But  if  you  have  really  a  lot  of  them,  you  can  think  of  adding  them.
 4)  It  may  be  good  if  the  substrate  is  there.  But  I  feel  these  plants  will  survive  without  substrate.  (I  am  sure  about  Najas  Indica)
 5)  I  think  nutrients  are  not  needed  as  it  may  attract  Attract  Algae.  (A  low  level  dosage  is  OK)
 6)  I  never  change  water  in  my  bucket.  Will  keep  adding  few  cups  of  water  every  week  as  water  evaporates.      Smile

If  there  is  lot  of  direct  sunlight,  consider  adding  some  floating  plants/Duck  weed.
My  balcony  bucket  is  free  from  Algae.  But  if  algae  starts  growing  in  the  place  where  direct  sun  light  is  there,  it  will  be  really  a  mess  and  your  Amanos  and  RCS  may  not  be  able  to  help.

 Best  Regards
 Sujo

Thanks  for  all  the  suggestions  and  directions  Sujo

I  would  like  to  keep  these  plants  till  they  get  picked  up.  Later  on  would  want  to  replace  this  with  a  tub  but  maybe  on  the  terrace.
I  have  a  feeling  the  not  many  hobbyists  will  come  to  collect  or  I  would  be  flooded  with  requests.

What  would  you  suggest  to  control  sunlight.  A  cover  with  holes  at  the  top  ?  I  like  the  option  of  Duck  Weed.  Fish  usually  eat  it  though.
Will  have  to  search  for  this.

Yes  I've  got  a  small  planted  bowl  next  to  an  opaque  window  with  a  filter  in  it.  That  got  full  of  algae  through  indirect  sun  through  the  opaque  window.
Now  I  keep  a  shade  near  it  so  the  glass  is  cleaner.  So  probably  a  shade  behind  the  bucket  and  a  cover  with  holes  at  the  top  should  do  well
What  do  you  think  ?  I  guess  I'll  have  to  monitor.

 Thanks  again
 Pio
