 Hi  Friends,

Kindly  excuse  my  ignorance  (not  very  bright  with  science...lol...)  -  just  wanted  to  request  you  to  kindly  guide  me  if  its  possible  to  use  a  computer  fan  to  cool  an  aquarium  ?  I  mean  I  do  know  that  its  the  ac  /  dc  current  thing  but  is  there  a  way  to  do  a  DIY  to  make  it  work  ?  Otherwise  is  there  anything  else  that  can  be  done  -  I  mean  are  there  really  small  exhaust  fans  available  for  normal  commercial  use  ?  Its  just  that  I  cant  find  the  normal  current  aquarium  fans  in  my  area  in  chennai  and  I  badly  need  to  cool  my  tank...

Will  be  a  great  help  if  somebody  can  guide  me...  or  let  me  know  if  the  aquarium  fans  are  available  anywhere  in  chennai  ?

 Please  advice...

If  you  can  see  any  DC  and  current  rating  on  the  fans..?  if  yes,  then  get  a  AC  to  DC  adapter  for  that  rating..  or  use  an  old  SMPS  if  you  have  one..

If  its  marked  DC  then  what  I  have  done  is  connecting  two(any  two  out  of  three  wire)  individual  wire  of  the  fan  with  the  mobile  charger  wire  and  it  will  run.

How  to  attach  with  tank  is  as  follows  what  I  have  done  with  cloth  hanger!!!

This  is  the  rating  of  an  3x3  inch  fan..  12V,  0.15A  power  rating.
so  you  will  find  similar  rating  printed  on  the  fan..
you  will  get  12v  adapter  in  major  electronics  shop..

its  very  simple  to  use  cooling  fans.....get  a  12V  adapter  as  nidhi  said,  then  get  a  female  pin  for  the  adapter  and  just  connect  the  wire  from  the  fans  to  the  adapter  female  pin

i'm  really  not  sure  that  a  pc  fan  is  gonna  have  any  effect  at  all...  they  are  meant  to  move  volumes  of  air  into  a  small  space...
you  get  small  fans  with  stands  for  ~600rs  that  should  be  more  efficient.   Smile

water  is  a  bad  conductor  of  heat,  metal  (in  computers)  is  a  good  conductor  and  these  fans  remove  excess  heat.

if  you  have  a  spare  heatsink  maybe  you  could  use  that,  but  wash  very  very  very  thoroughly,  its  toxic...  most  are  made  of  aluminum,  would  that  leach  into  the  water?

I  made  a  DIY  fan  addition  to  my  hood  with  one  PC  fan  scavenged  from  an  old  SMPS.  I  mounted  so  that  air  gets  pulled  out  of  the  hood.  There  are  inlets  on  the  far  side  of  the  hood  so  I  guess  there  would  be  enough  circulation.

What  I  have  noticed  definitely  though  is  that  there  is  more  evaporation  than  before.  Earlier,  there  was  no  visible  change  in  water  level  during  the  week  between  water  changes.  But  now,  I  can  see  2-3  cm  of  water  level  drop  in  a  week.

please  post  a  pic....am  using  these  fans  on  2  of  my  tank  but  i  make  the  air  flow  hit  the  water  so  that  the  water  cools  even  better.
evaporation  rate  will  increase  as  to  cool  the  water  some  of  it  has  to  evaporate....earthen  pots  we  all  learnt  in  school

I  will  work  better  if  the  air  strikes  the  water,  evaporation  will  be  higher  and  tank  will  get  cooler  faster.
I  am  using  a  boyu  fan  and  I  see  a  drop  of  about  3-4  C,  although  I  need  to  now  top  up  15  lit  of  water  twice  a  week.

 I  too  using  DIY  fan..

But  its  reducing  some  1'c  only...  Now  my  tank  temperature  is  28'c  only..

How  to  reduce  it  to  25  -  26'c?
