|

Hello Friends
Past 2 months I have staretd keeping goldfish once again. Its like back-to-basics. This time with an appropriate challenge of keeping the water clean and good as much as possible.
I believe in DIY concepts and most importantly minimum resources maximum out put.
Some times this idea may result into penny wise and pound foolish also. But anyways, after real hard knocks and exterme mistakes,
I have learnt a few tricks from IAH . Believe me I have used IAH 95%, that means I have hardly surfed anywhere else for information. (its a compliment please )
I have been wanting to use active carbon this time and finally I got it from Dawa Bazar-Kalbadevi-South Mumbai. It cost me a very small amount lxx per 1/2kg. Mind-you, a small sponge filter costs only 7x and is suffecient for 4 fishes 2'x1'x1' type tank.
I will post a few pcitures showing what happened with 14 fishes, 2'x1'x1' tank,
My Filter :-
emersible pump(a small fountain pump) with rubber tube
1 corner filter (its the same bio filter used with nylon wool)
2 pcs of 1" sponges,
1 small nylon wool matt placed inbetween 2 sponges
and about 100 gms of activated carbon. just below the nylon matt
all these, obviously have costs, but never mind, a professional product will cost around 35x if it were a branded equipment.
I want you all to try guess what would have been the results? |

I really got messed up getting to visualise the filtration set up you have, let me see.
You have one sponge filter, one fountain pump which I cant figure how you have connected or to what, and last what you have done to circulate the water through the nylon wool with carbon..
What I could have recommended for a gold fish tank which is very cost effective.. If you cant go for a cannister that is.. Is under gravel filter with a power head connected to pump out the water from the Gravel.
And doing regular weekly water changes. |

I googled your HMF and found good examples, but - Yes, somewhat like an HMF external filter with a power head inserted at the bottom of the BB tank.
In my terms I'd say an ultra-mini version of a cannister filter, which could be hung inside the hood, but just above the water. its like a top filter. but water comes from inside way down from the bottom. I have no idea of the flow rate.
But thanks for bringing my attention towards HMF |

Its working fine.
I made two of these
1- corner filter as container, Here the bacteria cycle has built up considerably, but I dont know if its the biological filteration or the active carbon and others working to clean-uip
2- small air tight - capped bucket. Here, there is no bacteria cycle and only nylon wool, below that sponge, below that 300 gms of active carbon.
It is having limitation though, I have changed 20% water today, after 09/07/2012. the water is yellowish and gloomy. |
