Hi all,
Recently I got a RO filter installed at my new home at Bannerghatta, since the only water source here is ground water. The technician who came to install it, measured the bore-well water from our tap which had around 800 TDS, then went on to measure the filtered water from the filter which had reduced it to around 100 TDS.
Till now, I had never bothered about water parameters, simply because I was using municipal water. now that I have no option, but to use the bore-well water which showed the above readings..
So what do you people suggest, Is this water fine for planted tank or should try to treat it or mix some ratio of RO water with this..
I don't have test kits or meters to give you other parameters like PH, GH and other stuff. |

I googled it TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS in water testing language
but otherwise reading your post heading I thought it was TAX DEDUCTED AT SOURCE. so I jumoed in and found something else |

TDS stands for Total Dissolved solids.
In ground water it is normally higher, but it is the hardness (GH) and alkalinity (KH) which are more relevant.
If you do not have test kits, try to test the TDS of municipal water and mix RO with tap water.
A water with TDS of 800 will be hard.
To put things in perspective my underground water has a TDS of 1200, GH- 520 ppm, KH- 320 ppm.
Hence I am mixing 50 lit of RO with 30 lit of tap water to bring down my GH & KH. |

Thanks Sandeep,
Initially when we shifted to this place and used it for drinking, we felt that the water was nice and sweet. So was not much worried to use it in my tank. But my family and I started to have health issues after drinking this for a few days. So we decided upon buying the RO filter, The readings of TDS got me worried...
May be, Its time to buy those test kits now. And do some home work on chemistry.
And as for now, will follow your advice.. will try 50:50 RO and Ground water.. |

Ok Shelly,
That's a relief. So what Sandeep said "but it is the hardness (GH) and alkalinity (KH) which are more relevant." is true.
and one more thing is.. You have a very nice planted setup there. |

Having hard water is not bad for planted tanks, it is actually better than having soft water.
I am mixing RO water because my TDS is 1200, now by mixing RO water I have bought down the TDS to approx 800, GH, 16, Kh 10 or so.
So my water parameters are about same as your water.
I intend to keep it at this level as my planted tank is doing nice.
if you are not going to have soft water plants or fish requiring soft water, you can use tap water.
Check this for more technical discussion if you are interested.

Once again thanks Sandeep and Shelly..
You have cleared up the clutter in my head and now I can be at peace..
I will go through the thread at barrreport, but not sure whether I will be able to make the head and tail of it.. because I suck at Chemistry.
But this will be a good fresh start at chemistry... |
