 Hi  All,

It  is  time  that  I  post  my  first  journal  about  my  planted  tank.
I  started  aquascaping  2  years  back  and  till  now  I  have  done  scaping  on  two  of  my  tanks.
This  post  is  the  journal  for  my  first  ever  planted  tank  and  I  name  it  “The  Learning  Ground”  Very Happy
I  had  changed  the  scape  for  once  in  this  tank,  when  I  had  my  room  shifted.

 2  FOOTER  TANK  SPECS.
 Dimensions:  24  inches(L)  X  12  inches  (B)X  15  inches(H)
Light:  24watt  pll  6500K  +  18  watt  normal  tube  light
 Co2:  Nil
Filtration:  Had  used  Hang  On  Back  filter  with  600liter/hour  flow  rate  but  later  changed  to  Over  The  Top  Boyu  filter  since  it  has  more  filter  media  space.
Substrate:  Contro  mixed  with  german  clay  and  sieved  river  sand.
Dosing:  I  had  started  dosing  after  3  months  with  a  stock  solution  of  macro  and  micros  given  by  a  fellow  hobbyist(Muneer  Ahmed  Kabir  AKA  Naturelover  in  IAH).  I  was  following  EI  method  with  a  50%  water  change  every  week.  I  was  not  dosing  phosphates  as  I  had  enough  fishes  to  feed.  The  excess  fish  food  became  my  source  of  phosphates.  I  dosed  as  per  his  suggestion  so  can’t  comment  well  on  the  dosage  but  was  dosing  it  every  alternate  days  with  macros  and  micro.  He  made  it  on  the  lower  side  of  concentration.
Plants:  It  has  had  almost  every  plant  since  I  was  on  learning  mode.  Had  success  in  vallisneria, amazon  sword,  crypt  wenditi  brown  ,crypt  parva, anubia  nana,A.  nana  petite,A.  barteri  var  barteri,A.  barteri  var  cofeefolia,  A.nana  gold,  A.  nana  wrinkled  leaf,  A.  congonesis,  A.  nana  round  leaf,A.  nana  eye,  A.  lancelota,A.  Minima, dwarf  sagiteria,Pigmy  chain  sword,Normal  java  fern,Windlov  java  fern,  H.  polysperma,H.  corymbosa, rotola  rotundofolia  red,Hydrilla,  Echinodorus  parviflorus  'tropica',marsila  hirasuta,  bolbitis  heudelotii(had  put  it  under  my  filter  for  good  flow)  and  riccia(when  kept  directly  under  light),Flame  moss,  java  moss
All  the  above  plants(except  for  A.  congonesis,  rotola  rotundo  folia  red  and  bolbitis  heudelotii  )  are  therefore  certified  to  be  usable  by  dumbest  of  aqua  scapers  with  minimum  equipments   Chuckle
Fishes  and  invertebrates:  Again  I  have  tried  most  of  the  fishes  and  almost  everything  was  a  success.Serpae  tetras, albino  corydoras, danios, cardinal  tetras, neon  tetras,  Glow  light  tetras,  denisoni  barb(excellent  jumpers  I  lost  mine  since  I  had  small  gap  for  lights),twig  fish(total  failure  since  it  was  brackish  water  fish  ),neon  Rainbow  ,otto  cinclus, neritte  snail, red  cherry  shrimp,  Assassin  snail,Hill  stream  loach(Lost  it  when  I  added  a  heater  to  treat  my  fish  for  ich),guppys,  platys, mollys,Congo  Tetras
   Issues  faced:
 1.         The  main  villain  for  me  was  my  house  owner  and  room  shifting.  I  found  the  first  villain  only  after  lots  of  research  and  it  ended  up  like  an  easy  catch.  Here  is  how  it  went….
I  normally  go  for  vacation  to  my  home  for  10  days  and  I  had  no  problem  with  my  fishes  on  initial  few  times.  I  always  used  the  normal  holiday  food  and  did  70%  water  change  on  return.  Once  I  came  back  I  saw  90%  of  fishes  where  dead   Sad  .  All  I  could  think  was  starvation.  This  repeated  once  again  after  few  other  vacations.  The  second  time  it  happened,  I  was  away  for  only  2  days   and  then  while  I  was  discussing  with  my  house  owner  He  admitted  that  he  did  switch  off  power  to  my  room  so  that  I  may  not  have  to  worry  about  anything  that  I  would  have  forgot  to  switch  off.  I  couldn’t  say  anything  except  4  words  “Don’t  Repeat  it  Please”
 2. Ich  :  This  I  treated  by  increasing  the  temperature  to  28C  and  adding  rock  salt(I  never  got  non  Iodised  salt  but  had  to  do  it  with  what  was  available).  I  changed  70  %  water  with  substrate  vacuuming.  This  was  done  every  day  for  2  weeks  but  still  I  lost  few  fishes  but  not  all.
 3. Brown  algae:  It  didn’t  cause  lot  of  issues  for  me  and  it  went  off  luckily  that  time  with  70%  water  change  for  2  weeks  every  day.
 4. Black  beard  Algae:  I  had  them  when  I  started  DIY  CO2.For  the  first  3  to  4  weeks  I  did  regularly  change  the  bottles  to  give  continuous  CO2  but  when  I  got  lazy  then  these  algae  appeared.  I  think  it  came  due  to  irregular  CO2.  By  this  time  all  the  plants  in  my  tank  seemed  to  be  settled  so  I  just  stopped  Co2,  as  most  of  my  tank  where  low  light  plants.  The  plants  with  the  algae  were  trimmed  and  all  the  Anubias  was  moved  to  a  red  cherry  shrimp  tank.  In  this  tank  there  was  no  light  and  liquid  fertilization  so  when  the  algae  died  the  shrimp  team  made  the  leaf  clean.
 5. Anubias  Rotting  off:  This  took  off  almost  8  rhizomes  of  my  healthy  anubias.  The  issue  occurred  when  I  introduced  anubia  lancelota  and  crypts  together.  I  had  no  clue  for  a  long  time  until  I  had  a  discussion  with  some  experts  where  they  described  it  as  a  disease  initiated  by  the  cypts  on  anubias.  The  problem  is  cypts  dissolve  first  before  getting  accustomed  to  the  tank.  During  this  time  it  will  bring  in  the  same  on  anubias.  This  turned  matching  for  every  thing  in  my  tank.  As  the  rizhomes  which  was  rotting  in  this  tank  did  well  in  my  other  tank.  What  I  did  is  cut  off  the  rotting  rizhomes  until  the  rizhomes  don’t  have  a  brown  spot  on  the  cut  portion  (This  is  shown  in  the  affected  anubia  rizhomes).  This  remaining  portion  of  my  anubias  was  moved  to  another  tank  where  they  are  doing  well.
 6. Less  tank  width:  This  is  one  of  the  most  common  mistakes  done  by  all  people  in  the  starting  of  aquascaping.  We  choose  the  lengthiest  tank  that  we  can  afford  and  forget  about  the  width.  This  does  not  cause  any  trouble  for  growing  plants  but  when  it  come  to  aquascaping  it  is  a  disaster  to  have  a  2  feet  long  tank  with  just  1  feet  for  the  depth(width).  This  I  have  avoided  by  getting  my  next  tank  with  2.5  feet  length  and  2  feet  width   Very Happy
 7.  Low  filter  flow:  Both  HOB  and  Over  the  top  filter  has  a  problem  that  it  doesn't  give  good  and  even  flow  for  the  rate  that  is  marked  on  it.  So  Always  get  a  1000  liter/hr  of  HOB  and  Over  the  top  for  a  2  feeter  to  get  sufficient  filter  media  space  and  sufficient  flow  after  putting  more  media.  I  corrected  my  mistake  by  moving  on  to  a  canister  but  It  could  have  been  handled  by  using  1000  liter/hour  HOB  filter

First  scape  (Not  really  Chuckle  )

 Second  Scape

Last  scape:  I  should  call  it  “last  state”  as  this  was  what  I  became  As  I  have  moved  the  things  I  need  from  this  tank  for  the  next  scape.  It  also  has  some  wood  pieces  on  which  I  have  tied  flame  moss  for  my  next  tank.  Now  I  am  not  dosing  anything  other  than  fish  food   Smile   for  the  last  3  months.
After  stopping  dosing  I  have  had  no  issues  except  I  had  seen  some  potassium  deficiency  on  H  ploysperma  but  I  will  be  dismantling  it,  as  soon  as  my  other  scape  is  up.

Future  (If  god  allows   Smile  )
This  tank  will  be  partitioned:  One  partition  will  be  used  as  sump  for  keeping  the  level  of  water  same  in  my  next  setup  and  the  other  half  will  be  used  for  keeping  orange  cray  fish.

Very  interesting  Journal  Jabba,  Reading  this  made  me  feel  exactly  kind  of  situation  I  was  in  before  especially  with  tank  depth.  Many  thanx  for  posting  it  as  I  am  sure  it  can  be  very  valuable  for  someone  who  wanted  to  start  a  planted  tank  for  the  first  time

 Jaiby,

The  title  of  the  thread  cannot  be  too  long.  Reduce  the  Title  characters  and  see.  Even  after  that  it  fails,  tell  me  what  is  the  title  header  you  want.

Thank  you  Radjanair  sir.....  It  has  been  dismantled  as  I  need  to  give  more  attention  to  my  current  scape.  It  was  too  hard  to  maintain  3  scapes.
My  third  tank  (currently  second)....  I  will  be  making  another  journal.  There  wont  be  much  learning  point  as  I  don't  do  much  for  that  tank  but  still  I  will  do  it  when  I  get  time.

Thanks  a  lot  Radjanair  sir  for  reviving  this  thread.  I  was  little  disappointed  when  I  saw  only  few  responses.

 Jaiby,

The  title  of  the  thread  cannot  be  too  long.  Reduce  the  Title  characters  and  see.  Even  after  that  it  fails,  tell  me  what  is  the  title  header  you  want.

 Regards,

Nayak  sir  I  wanted  the  title  to  be  Jaiby's  first  Aquascaping  Journal  "The  Learning  Ground".
 Is  that  too  long?
