Hello!Sundar...Happy  to  know  you  tried  your  hand  at  keeping  altum.Where  did  you  get  them  from?...is  it  possible  to  get  them  again?I  know  altum  are  a  real  challenge, but  thats  why  we  are  all  here, right?      ,we  both  can  try  again, and  get  them  to  spawn(inshalla!),by  comparing  notes.(BTW  how  much  did  they  cost?  Confused  maybe  that  will  decide  if  its  possible  to  take  such  a  risk  or  not.)

 Hey  Guys--

Do  you  realize  your  website  is  listed  as  INDIANA  aquarium  hobbyist??

I  am  from  Indiana,  in  the  USA.

Am  I  still  allowed  to  participate  in  your  forums?

I  hope  so,  you  have  all  been  so  nice!!!

Well,  the  Altums  are  not  doing  so  well.    They  have  come  down  with  fin  rot  and  columanaris.    The  company  who  I  purchased  from  has  over  nighted  me  some  heavy  duty  medicine,  hopefully  it  will  work.

 Wish  me  luck!!

 Thanks,

 Christiana

LOL  Christiana!  I  dont  know  where  its  listed  that  way!
Ofcourse  we  dont  have  any  restrictions  on  who  participates  in  the  forums  its  not  a  very  closed  community.
I  think  you  might  need  to  check  at  what  Ph  and  hardness  your  Supplier  had  kept  the  Altums  in.  Wild  Caught  fishes  generally  are  very  sensitive  to  differences  in  ph  and  hardness.
 Best  of  luck  with  them!

Can  u  let  us  know  what  medicines  the  company  has  recommended?

 Hi  Christiana,

A  friend  of  mine  had  procured  12  Nos.  of  fairly  big  Altums  from  Singapore  costing  close  to  35S$  each. These  were  my  observations.

They  were  2"dia  bodysize  and  the  finspan  reached  close  to  8",brown  in  colour.

Long  snouted  they  were  used  to  live  food  and  did  not  accept  beefheart  for  almost  two  months.Even  then  would  go  for  long  stretches  without  feed.

They  were  comfortable  in    pH    6.6  to  6.8  water

Temperature  had  to  be  increased  to  32C  for  them  to  spread  out  their  fins  At  lower  temperatures  they  would  get  clamped

I  understand  they  are  better  off    between  32  and  35C

They  had  this  habit  of  yawning  regularly.

They  were  quite  aggressive  and  often  attacked  each  other  violently.

They  would  get  scared  /hide  in  case  of  human  movement  in  front  of  the  tank.

A  change  in  tank  setting    from  bare(  with  gravel)to  heavily  planted  with  vallisneria  helped  them  settle  down.A  lot  of  blackwater  was  added  to  keep  the  water  brown  .And  most  important    lights  were  a  no  no.  as  also  water  movement  from  the  spray  bar. All  this  in  a  6  feet  tank.

Lastly  ,  they  needed  a  20%  water  change  everyday.

I  hope  this  info  is  of  help  to  you.

 Kiran
 Coimbatore

Lastly  they  did  not  survive  for  long    due  to  injuries  and  water  quality  problems

 Sorry  guys--

My  eyes  are  playing  tricks  one  me!!    Hee-Hee!!  Perhaps  it  is  because  I  AM  from  Indiana,  that  is  what  my  eyes  told  me  I  saw!!

 Goodness--I  feel  so  silly!!

 Thanks  for  all  your  info.

The  medicine  is  called  Furanase.    Supposedly,  it  treats  Columanaris,  Fin  and  Tail  Rot,  and  Cotton  Wool.    So--we  shall  see.

If  you  guys  are  really  into  Altums,  here  are  some  wonderful  sites.    But  you  have  probably  already  heard  of  them.

Thanks  for  allowing  me  to  participate.

 Have  a  great  day!!

Altums  are  pretty  rare  in  India.    If  u  get  wild  caught  they  are  more  vulnerable  for  the  following  reasons
-From  the  moment  they've  been  caught  they  would  hv  fatigue  syndrome.
-Transit  would  have  been  under  various  water  parameters  from  wild,  to  an  exporter,  to  an  importer,  a  distributor,  a  LFS  and  finally  you.
Altums  can  tolerate  pretty  hard  water  but  are  extremely  stressed  in  fluctuations  in  water  condititons.
If  u  hv  a  captive  bred  altum  from  somewhere  or  from  your  lfs  who  had  it  for  months  together  then  you  can  decide  on  buying  it.
Provided  with  warm  (32C)  water,  with  the  pH  and  hardness  tht  your  provided  had  and  0  Ammonia  &  Nitrates  altums  can  do  well.

Saw  some  for  sale  at  Singapore  for  25  Sing  $  apiece.

They  were  doing  very  well  in  a  planted  setup,  with  heavy  lighting[MH].

Asked  the  person  about  the  pH.  Measured  it  in  front  of  me.  It  was  6.8.

I  too  have  read  that  these  buggers  need  dimly  lit,  brown  water,  and  pH  ranges  of  4  to  5  and  stuff.  But  nobody  gives  authoritative  info  on  that.

I  would  go  by  what  I  saw.

Beta,  Adip,  try  and  source  some  for  all  of  us,  so  we  do  get  to  try  our  hands  on  this  one.
