PostPosted: Thu Dec 13, 2012 7:53 pm Post subject: CRS Tank - Update Reply with quote

I  always  had  a  dream  of  keeping  Crystal  Red  Shrimp  since  sometime  but  the  complexity  of  keeping  them  always  scared  me.  After  reading  many  articles  the  confidence  really  grew  and  finally  I  convinced  myself  that  I  am  ready.  My  hearty  tanks  to  Prashanta  for  really  boosting  my  confidence  and  providing  ample  of  knowledge  in  the  keeping  of  CRS.  Shelly  as  well  for  explaining  me  the  various  parameters  of  water  and  convincing  me  to  buy  a  TDS  meter  before  starting  the  shrimp  tank.  I  have  been  keeping  RCS  for  a  while  and  have  successfully  bred  them  from  5  to  100+  Smile  (  if  I  can  keep  this  legacy  with  CRS  then  MAN  I  AM  RICH!)

Built  a  1sqft  tank.  As  usual  continued  with  the  black  silicone  from  the  previous  build,  I  don’t  know  but  for  some  reason  black  silicone  do  look  good.

For  filter  I  decided  to  make  a  in-tank  sump  filter.  Reason  :  I  have  noticed  when  I  used  hang-on  filter  no  matter  how  well  I  cover  the  inlet  of  the  filter  the  shrimp  babies  do  find  their  way  into  the  filter  and  surprisingly  they  were  alive  !  cant  risk  this  with  CRS.  So  with  this  type  of  filter  if  the  shrimp  jump  the  other  side,  it  will  fall  on  the  layers  of  sponge.  Other  reason  was  to  have  ample  of  filter  media  for  good  bacteria  colony  and  300lph  return  pump  for  extra  efficient  filtration.  However  the  flow  force  will  be  reduced  with  big  holes  on  the  spray  bar.

Will  keep  updating  as  it  progresses..

 Nice  Tank  !

Use  a  fine  mesh  to  cover  the  overflow  and  use  good  media  as  well.  One  key  thing  i  would  like  to  highlight  is  that  smaller  the  tank  (Lower  the  volume  of  water)  the  more  unstable  it  is.  This  is  not  good  for  CRS.  In  my  opinion  its  always  better  to  got  for  larger  tanks.  I  prefer  a  minimum  of  18x18x18  Tanks.

Thanks  Seetharam.  Yes  I  will  be  using  the  plastic  mesh  and  I  have  a  an  extra  kg  of  ceramic  rings  so  would  be  using  it.  Initially  the  idea  was  to  have  a  2*1*1ft  tank  but  after  presenting  the  proposal  to  Wife  the  size  came  down  to  1sqft   Sad

I  have  used  silicone  to  do  the  job.  It  holds  fair  tight  and  anyways  the  acrylic  is  used  as  a  sandwich  inside  the  tank  so  there  is  no  much  pressure  involved.   Smile

Silicone  is  set.  Did  the  leak  test  and  checked  the  performance  of  the  filter,  everything  seems  good.  The  picture  of  the  filter  from  behind.

After  a  nice  lunch  I  completed  planting  the  Nano.  The  plants  used  are  only  ferns  and  moss.  For  substrate  I  went  in  for  Caribsea  FloraMax.  The  tank  is  all  set  for  cycling.

I  used  canned  water  for  the  tank.  Couldnt  resist  posting  the  picture  as  my  dog  was  eagerly  posing  next  to  it   Smile

And  the  cloudy  tank  after  planting.
