 I  recently  cleaned  out  my  5g  tank  and  rescaped  it.  Although  I  had  to  wait  for  more  than  2  weeks  for  actually  setting  it  up,  it  is  finally  in  the  making.  The  delay  was  because  I  couldn't  find  a  suitable  substrate.  And  I  have  come  to  dislike  and  doubt  the  loose  packets  of  "ADA  fertilizing  soil"  that  they  sell  in  most  LFS  here.  I  then  stumbled  upon  Cotrosoil  in  the  Big  Bazaar's  aquarium  shop  in  my  city.  I  was  elated!  And  so  the  journey  begins..It  is  of  course  my  first  time  at  Shrimp-keeping,  so  be  kind,  be  true  but  most  of  all  be  sure  to  comment.  Here  goes------>
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Specifics  of  the  Tank  -
 5  gallon  tank  containing  3  ltrs  of  Contro  Soil  substrate(4mm)
 Lighting  -  11  watt  CFL  with  a  round  reflector
 Period  of  lighting  -  9  A.M  to  2  P.M........6  P.M  to  9  P.M
 Weekly  25  %  Water  change  (UV  filtered  water)  with  a  2  drop  dozing  of  JBL  biotopol  C  and  a  common  anti-chlorinator  .  Have  added  a  clean  dry  IAL
 Heater  -  75  watt
 Plants:  Ambulia,  Vallisneria,  pygmy  vallisneria,  dwarf  hairgrass,  rotala  nanjenshan,  Rotala  green.
 Inverts:  Red  Cherry  Shrimps(about  5-7  including  a  preggie  one,  with  many  shrimplets  running  about...I  should  start  a  nursery!)
 Filter  -  Biofoam  (Ocean  Free)  baby  sponge  filter.
 Food  -  Very  tiny  bit  of  algae  wafer/tetra  bits  once  a  day.  If  they  dont  eat  that,  I  remove  them  after  an  hour  or  so.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Day  1:
 I  cleaned  the  tank  and  rinsed  it  in  mild  soap  water  to  remove  any  previous  substrate  and  dirt.  Washed  it  very  well  and  wiped  it  dry  with  a  clean  cotton  cloth.  After  that  I  began  pouring  in  the  Contro  soil-all  3  ltrs  of  it  and  topped  it  off  with  water  to  half  the  tank.  It  does  look  a  bit  cloudy  in  the  pics  below  but  it  did  clear  up  in  an  hour  or  so.

 Tank  photos  today..

 Cloudy  water  because  of  the  substrate.

 Bucket  full  of  plants

 I  wasn't  kidding  about  the  cloudy  water!

 Dirt  settled  on  the  leaves...hmmm,  hoping  the  shrimps  will  clean  them  up

 This  is  what  the  tank  looked  like  on  day  1

 Tank  -  a  few  days  later.  Removed  the  coconut  from  my  2  feet  tank  and  put  it  here(with  some  moss  attached  to  it).  Its  their  safe-zone.  Also  added  an  IAL..they  graze  on  it  every  now  and  then

 The  small  HOB  filter  has  been  removed  now,  and  its  sponge  has  been  used  to  seed  the  new  sponge  filter.

 All  the  best.  Mine  have  multiplied  from  8  to  nearly  200+  in  3  months.
 RCS  are  cool  shrimp.  I  use  RCS  to  clean  up  algae  infested  plants  from  my  main  tank.  They  make  the  plants  look  all  shiny  and  clean  in  a  couple  of  days.
 Is  almond  leaf  needed?  Mine  ignore  leaves.  Also  what  about  heater?  Is  it  essential.  One  of  my  friends  told  me  chiller  is  a  must.
 I  dont  use  even  a  filter.  Clean  up  time  is  the  most  difficult.  Avoiding  casualities  is  impossible.
 How  often  to  do  water  changes  in  shrimp  tanks?

 Looks  like  he  was  lying  to  you.  A  chiller  is  deinita  no  no  unless  you're  living  in  a  desert  :p  a  heater  is  put  to  speed  breeding  process.

 beautiful  tank   Thumb Up  ,  just  imaging,  the  way,  it  would  look,  once  the  grass,  spreads  across  the  ground,with  the  plants  full  grown  into  thick  bushes,  it  would  just  look,  like  a  forest   Very Happy  .

 looking  forward  for  more  updates  on  the  tank.

 You  should  do  some  alternate  day  water  changes  for  a  couple  of  weeks  since  Contorsoil  gives  off  ammonia  like  ADA  Amazonia.  Since  you  are  using  two  seeded  filters  the  cycling  should  be  sped  up

 Nice  effort   Thumb Up

 Just  a  suggestion,  avoid  using  soap  water  in  future,  even  a  minor  trace  can  have  disastrous  effect

 Guys,  thanks  for  the  valuable  input..now  I  cant  quote  and  reply  each  and  everyone  of  you  here.  So  here  is  a  wholesale  reply  ->

 1)@navneethtk:  keep  your  eyes  peeled  for  the  shrimp  photos..they  are  coming  soon!

 2)@DRDHEEP:  I  do  water  changes  once  a  week.  25%  WC.  The  need  of  a  heater  is  very  area  specific  as  a  member  -  zico_aqua  adviced  me  that  if  the  temperature  variations  are  too  much  in  the  entire  day,  it  would  be  best  to  keep  a  heater.  The  temp  drops  a  huge  8-10  degrees  here  in  my  city.  I  am  not  so  sure  about  the  chiller..thats  a  new  one.  maybe  in  the  summer  I  might  post  the  question  when  the  temp  rises  up  to  an  intolerable  33-35  degrees.  Kudos  on  the  huge  collection  of  shrimps  you  have.  I  have  lost  a  few  due  to  improper  acclimatizing(read  :  plopping  the  shrimps  straight  out  of  the  bag  into  the  tank).  I  prefer  a  filter  as  it  helps  in  maintaining  good  water  conditions.

 3)@Severumkid:  Its  more  a  necessity  now  than  for  ornamental  purposes.  I  am  trying  to  get  my  hands  on  a  25  watt  heater,  but  its  very  hard  to  find.

 4)@thebluearatus:  I  am  going  for  a  bushy  background  with  the  rotalas  which  is  balanced  by  the  uniformly  grown  and  trimmed  carpets  of  hairgrass  and  pygmy  valls.  Maybe  in  about  3-4  months,  the  tank  will  grow  this..pics  posting.  I  have  always  loved  the  dutch  style  of  aquascaping  while  this  will  not  be  a  pure  anything.

 5)@Chetesh:  thanks  for  the  input.  These  valls  I  have  had  for  the  past  4  months  and  they  have  not  grown  more  than  what  you  see  above.  In  a  low  tech  nano,  most  plants  take  longer  time  to  grow.  Even  the  ambulias  take  a  long  time.

 6)@Mortis:  I  know  what  you  mean,  I  have  done  water  changes  regularly..but  the  shrimps  have  settled  well  and  are  even  coming  out  well  in  the  light..isn't  that  a  good  sign?  I  will  do  water  changes  every  three  days  now.  I  am  not  so  sure  about  the  alternate  day  changes.

 7)@nanomania:  yeah,  I  already  have  as  the  last  pic  above  is  indicative  of  that.  I  just  wanted  to  speed  up  the  cycling  process.

 8)@Aquacrazy_Ash:  I  know...I  knew  that  fact  while  I  was  doing  it  Oops   It  was  a  stupid  attempt  to  make  the  tank  look  spic  and  span..fortunately  these  5-6  have  not  lost  their  breath.

 9)@jabba:  hmmm...Im  gonna  do  the  same  then.  these  gals  love  to  graze  on  the  IAL,  the  leaves,  rocks  and  what  not!  No  wonder  I  find  them  pooping  all  the  time!

 Thanks  again  for  all  your  generous  comments..looking  forward  to  some  more!  I  wanted  to  go  for  a  cement  background  but  I  gave  up  on  the  idea  as  I  didn't  find  it  safe  enough  for  shrimps  and  I  was  also  in  a  hurry.  I  have  bought  a  good  12  shrimps  so  far.  But  so  far  5-6  have  survived..and  the  survivers  are  from  the  very  first  batch.  They  are  doing  very  well.  As  I  said  I  was  too  much  in  a  hurry  that  I  didnt  acclimatize  the  bag  of  shrimps  to  the  tank  water  before  adding  them  into  it.  Pics  of  the  shrimps  are  coming  soon...

 Thanks..I  do  want  to  place  more  moss,but  I  cant   seem  to  find  any  LFS  here  selling  more  than  Anubias  for  the  moment.  For  the  moment,  I  have  transferred  some  moss  from   my  two  feeter  to  this  nano.
